Once you’ve completed the requirements of your Ignition Interlock Device program, you’ll probably start wondering about how to remove your Interlock Device. It’s a quick and easy process that just requires you to schedule a device removal appointment at your Smart Start service center.
Before you schedule an appointment, however, it’s important to check your state’s requirements to verify that you meet all of the conditions. Below is a state-by-state breakdown of key steps to take before you schedule your appointment for removing your Interlock Device.
Click on your state button to go to your state section:
Please Note: If you remove your device before completing the requirements of your IID program, your driving privileges may be suspended or canceled, and any fees paid will be non-refundable.
This guide provides information on how to get an Ignition Interlock Device removed from your vehicle. In many jurisdictions, getting your driving privileges restored is a separate process that requires different steps. Contact your monitoring authority to learn about specific requirements.

What Foods Should I Avoid With My Ignition Interlock?
Updated May 8, 2025
You may have heard rumors about certain foods causing a “false positive” reading on your Ignition Interlock. Is there any truth to these claims — and, if so, what besides alcohol shows up on a breathalyzer?
Because Smart Start breathalyzers use alcohol-specific detection technology, there are very few foods that can cause a false positive on a breathalyzer. Of the handful that can, simply washing your mouth out with water and waiting a few minutes will solve the problem — so there’s no need to actually avoid any foods. Let’s look at things that will set off an Interlock Device, so you can be aware of which foods deserve a little more caution when you’re using an IID.
Note: The terminology “false positive” is misleading. If your Interlock Device registers alcohol, it’s because there is alcohol present in the sample, even if it’s only a trace amount. We use the term sometimes in this article because it’s part of how many people talk about these issues.
Can spicy food set off a breathalyzer?
Spicy food will not cause a false positive on a Smart Start Interlock Device, or any modern IID. Go ahead and enjoy those jalapeño poppers or ghost pepper wings.
So where does this myth come from? You probably know that spicy food can irritate your digestive tract, causing gas expulsions like burps. On rare occasions, the small amounts of methane created by digestion could cause a false positive on older types of IID.
These older IIDs were often sensitive to multiple types of compounds, so it was reasonable for drivers to wonder what could set off their Interlock Device. Fortunately, alcohol is the only substance that modern vehicle IIDs detect. If you’re using an IID from a reputable provider like Smart Start, don’t worry about spicy food.
Can sugar or carbs set off a breathalyzer?
Yes, but only under rare circumstances. Pastries like donuts and cinnamon rolls, or carb-heavy foods like pizza, can occasionally generate an extremely small amount of alcohol. This happens as they interact with yeasts that are naturally present in your mouth and the rest of your body.
The good news is that this trace alcohol content dissipates within minutes. Therefore, if you indulge in a chocolate mint, a donut, or even a slice of pizza, wait a few minutes and rinse your mouth with water before taking a breath test with your Ignition Interlock.
As a general recommendation, Smart Start always suggests rinsing your mouth with water before any breath test. This straightforward tip will help alleviate any concerns about trace alcohol readings on your breathalyzer. Waiting a few minutes after eating also allows sufficient time for the trace alcohol from the food to completely disperse.
Can mouthwash affect a breathalyzer?
Yes, some mouthwash products and breath sprays contain alcohol. If you use one of these right before you blow into your IID, your device might register an alcohol reading. You can read more about alcohol and mouthwash here.
Again, we recommend waiting a few minutes and rinsing your mouth with water before using your Smart Start IID. If you want to avoid the risk entirely, many alcohol-free mouthwashes and breath sprays are available.
Will sugar alcohols show up on a breathalyzer?
Yes, it’s possible (but rare) to get a false positive on an IID from sugar alcohols like xylitol and erythritol. These sugar-like compounds are used as sweeteners in sugarless gum, diet energy drinks, and other sugar-free foods. These compounds won’t get you intoxicated — but while they’re in your mouth, they are similar enough to ethyl alcohol to potentially set off your IID when you give a breath sample.
To avoid a false positive from sugar alcohols, we recommend the same advice as with other alcohol-containing foods: wash your mouth thoroughly with water, and wait a few minutes before giving your breath sample.
Will kombucha show up on a breathalyzer?
It’s technically possible for kombucha to show up on a breathalyzer, since it’s a fermented beverage that may contain trace alcohol. However, the amounts of alcohol are so tiny that washing your mouth out with water and waiting a few minutes should always be sufficient to clear out any alcohol. Just make sure to avoid “hard” kombucha drinks, as these do contain significant amounts of alcohol.
Will coffee set off an Interlock Device?
No, coffee itself will not affect your Interlock Device reading. However, certain flavor additives to coffee, such as vanilla extract, can contain trace alcohol. If you’ve had your daily Starbucks vanilla latte before driving, it’s a good idea to wait before giving your breath sample and use water to rinse your mouth out.
While we’re on the subject, let’s dispel a common myth: Drinking coffee will not help you “sober up” after drinking alcohol. Stimulants like caffeine can make you feel less intoxicated, but they won’t do anything to lower your BAC or make driving more safe. If you’ve been drinking alcohol, your only option for passing an IID breath test is to wait until your BAC goes back to zero.
Will perfume, hand sanitizer, or aftershave show up on an Interlock Device?
Despite the high concentrations of alcohol present in these products, none of them should register as alcohol on your breath unless you’ve sprayed them in the air right before using your IID. If you’re putting on hairspray or cologne in the car, wait a few minutes before using your device.
Does smoking or vaping affect a breathalyzer test?
Smoking has no effect on breath alcohol tests. Vaping, however, can potentially register as alcohol in a breath sample if the liquid in your vape contains ethanol, according to a scientific study. Check the ingredients in your vape liquid and consider choosing an ethanol-free option if you have an IID.
If you smoke or vape, make sure that you don’t blow smoke or vapor into your IID. It’s unlikely to affect your IID reading, but it’s not good for the device and may cause a violation. Take a deep breath of clean air before you blow into your IID, and avoid blowing while you have a cigarette or cigar lit.
What substances does an Interlock Device detect?
Smart Start’s alcohol-specific Interlock Devices are designed to accurately detect alcohol, and only alcohol. You can read more about how breathalyzers work here.
That said, it’s true that a handful of specific types of food can contain alcohol. To ensure your readings are accurate, simply follow our recommendations: rinse your mouth with water before testing, wait a few minutes if you’ve consumed alcohol-containing sweets, and rest assured that Smart Start’s technology can handle these situations effectively.
If you have any further questions or need guidance regarding your Interlock program, our dedicated Customer Care team is always available to assist you. Don’t let food fails or Ignition Interlock myths hinder your progress—take control of your journey today.

How Does an Ignition Interlock Work?
Do you need to install an Ignition Interlock Device to regain your driving privileges and are wondering how does an Interlock Device work? Look no further! In this article, we’ll explain the ins and outs of these devices in a way that’s easy to understand. Smart Start, a leading provider of Ignition Interlock technology, is here to help you grasp the basics.
What is an Ignition Interlock Device?
To understand how Ignition Interlock Devices work, it’s best to explain what it is and its purpose first.
An Ignition Interlock Device (IID), also called a car breathalyzer, is typically installed in your motor vehicle as part of a legal requirement after drunk driving. Looking for a reliable Ignition Interlock vendor? Smart Start has designed Ignition Interlock Devices that are compact and easy to use. They’re about the size of a smartphone and can be discreetly installed near the driver’s seat to avoid drawing attention.
The Ignition Interlock Device comes into play when you want to start your motor vehicle. It requires you to provide a breath sample before the engine can start. Simply blow into the mouthpiece, and if your breath sample falls within the allowed limits, your car will start without any issues.
How does an Ignition Interlock Device work?
An Ignition Interlock Device is installed in a motor vehicle and measures the driver’s breath alcohol concentration (BrAC). Users provide their breath sample into the device’s mouthpiece. If a breath sample is provided with alcohol present in the user’s system, the vehicle will not start. The vehicle will only start after a passing breath sample. Accurately measuring your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC) is important for Ignition Interlock testing. Smart Start’s devices use advanced fuel cell technology to achieve precise and reliable BrAC measurements.
What’s the difference between BrAC and Blood Alcohol Content?
Explaining Ignition Interlock Tests
Part of understanding how Ignition Interlock Devices work is knowing that there are two different types of tests: the initial test and random rolling retests.
Initial tests
When you enter your vehicle and place your key in the ignition, or push the start button, you must provide an acceptable breath sample into your Ignition Interlock. You’ll find that, depending on the Interlock provider you chose, there are specific breathing, humming and/or suck-back patterns you need to fulfill to provide a passing sample into your device. Read more about our easy Ignition Interlock test patterns on the blog.
These breath patterns ensure it is an actual person taking the test, preventing ‘workarounds’ or bypassing attempts. With Smart Start, we provide easy breath testing patterns.
In any case, initial tests prove you are sober and safe to drive. Upon a passing breath sample, your vehicle will successfully start and you can begin your trip.
Random rolling retests
Remember that throughout your drive you’ll need to continue proving your sobriety. That’s why the Ignition Interlock Device will randomly prompt for a breath sample during your trip. These tests are commonly referred to as random rolling retests.
Random rolling retests do NOT shut off your vehicle during your drive. If a random rolling retest is skipped, missed or failed, the consequences differ in every state in the United States. However, an Ignition Interlock will never turn off your vehicle as a result.
Smart Start recommends pulling over and parking safely to perform your random rolling retest. Once you provide an acceptable breath sample, you can continue with your drive.
The Importance of Regular Device Calibration
Regular breathalyzer calibration is crucial to ensure the proper functioning of your Ignition Interlock Device. State Authorities require calibration every 30 to 90 days, depending on which state you live in and which device you have.
During calibration, a technician will check your Ignition Interlock system, perform any necessary updates, and download test data to share with the authorities. Calibration usually takes around 15 to 20 minutes and can be done at any of Smart Start’s 1,800+ service center locations. The device will alert you when it needs service. Missing an appointment may prevent your car from starting, so make sure to visit a Smart Start service center to unlock it. Some jurisdictions may even provide a temporary unlock code for you to drive to the service location.
How does a temporary unlock code work?

Understanding the Difference: DUI vs DWI, OWI vs DUI and Other Impaired Driving Acronyms Explained
Updated June 10, 2025
Depending on what state you’re in, getting arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs might result in a DUI, a DWI, an OWI, an OVI, or several other types of charges.
With so many impaired driving acronyms, it can be hard to understand the difference between a DUI vs DWI, an OWI vs DUI, etc. All these acronyms generally revolve around the same idea: operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. This can also include cases where individuals drive impaired due to legally prescribed medication. Let’s look more closely at the definitions of these terms and the consequences they can come with.
Common Acronyms for Impaired Driving (and What They Mean)
Since the list of impaired driving acronyms is so long and there are many definitions, it is easy to get confused. We’ve created a list of the different terms used in the United States:
DUI and DWI are the most common and are used by 44 of the states. Some of these acronyms are only used by one state, such as OWVI in Michigan or OVUII in Hawaii. We’ll go more into which state uses which acronym below.
Why are there so many different impaired driving acronyms?
DUI, DWI, OUI, and OWI are acronyms commonly used to describe impaired driving offenses involving alcohol and/or drugs. However, the specific acronyms and their meanings can vary from state to state, reflecting the differences in impaired driving laws.
Regardless of the specific acronym used, it’s crucial to understand that a DUI, DWI, OUI, or OWI is considered a criminal offense in every state. The legal blood alcohol content or concentration (BAC) limit is 0.08% nationwide, except for Utah, where it’s 0.05%, as noted by the Utah Department of Public Safety. However, underage drivers charged with drunk or impaired driving may face different limits.
DUI vs OWI vs DWI vs OVI
In the majority of US states, these terms all mean the same thing: driving while your BAC is over the legal limit, or while you’re under the influence of other impairing substances. The main difference is what term your state’s laws use. However, in the states where the terms have different meanings, it’s important to know which term means what.
DUI vs DWI
DUI and DWI are the most common acronyms across states for an intoxicated driving charge. In most states, they have very similar or identical meanings, although most states use either one or the other.
In many states, these terms can refer to either driving with a blood alcohol content over the legal limit, or driving while under the influence of drugs. This includes common recreational drugs like marijuana and cocaine, but many people are surprised to learn that the definition can include drugs legally prescribed by a medical professional. Thus, be sure to check the warning labels on any prescription medicine you take for information about whether it can affect your ability to drive a vehicle, and ask your doctor about the risks of doing so.
In some states, DUI and DWI can refer to different charges. In Arkansas, for example, the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration states that DWI is the charge for drivers over 21 who blow over a .08 BAC. DUI, meanwhile, is exclusively for drivers under 21 with a tested BAC between .02 and .08. A few states have unique terms, like driving while ability impaired (DWAI) in Colorado. According to the Colorado Legislature website, this refers to driving with a lower BAC while still demonstrating impairment “to the slightest degree.”
OWI vs DUI
OWI, OVI, OMVWI, and other related terms use the word “operating” instead of “driving,” but they usually mean the same thing as a DUI or DWI. Some states use these terms to be more accurate, since you don’t actually have to be driving a vehicle to be charged.
If that sounds confusing, here’s the deal: Many states require only that you are in “actual physical control” of the vehicle, meaning drivers can be charged for sitting behind the wheel of a parked vehicle while intoxicated. In addition, you don’t necessarily have to be “driving,” since you can be arrested in most states for operating various other types of vehicles, such as motorcycles, scooters, or tractors, while intoxicated.
Impaired Driving Acronym List by State
Below is an easy-to-use chart of each state, its acronym for impaired driving, and whether the acronym includes alcohol, drugs, or both. If there is more than one acronym listed, the state has more than one meaning for impaired driving.

Consequences of an Impaired Driving Charge
The consequences of impaired driving offenses vary from state to state and will likely depend on factors like the amount of alcohol in your system and whether it’s your first offense.
In many cases, individuals may have the option to have an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) installed in their vehicle in order to get a restricted license and begin driving again. (As if there weren’t enough acronyms already, these are also called Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Devices (BAIIDs) in some states, such as Illinois.)
An Interlock Device requires the user to blow a breath sample into an alcohol-detecting unit before starting their vehicle and while driving. The good news is that these devices don’t disrupt your daily routine, as the breath tests required only take a matter of seconds. Learn more about how IIDs work here.
How long you have to keep an Interlock Device installed in your vehicle depends on the state you got the DUI in and your specific program requirements. Smart Start’s Program Advisors can help you learn about options for an IID that meets your requirements, so get in touch now if you need help figuring out the next step in getting back on the road.

Navigating Your First DUI in Florida
Experiencing your first DUI in Florida can be a life-altering event, but it’s important to remember that there is hope for a brighter future ahead. At Smart Start, we understand the challenges you may face and are here to guide you through the process with our expertise in Ignition Interlock Devices and exceptional customer service. Let’s dive deeper into what you can expect after a first DUI conviction in the state of Florida while highlighting the ways Smart Start can assist you every step of the way.
First DUI Arrest in Florida
The first step of your DUI begins with the arrest itself. As you process this event, it’s crucial to understand the potential consequences and take prompt action. Within 10 days of your arrest, you will need to make an important decision: scheduling an administrative hearing or waiving your right to one. If you do schedule a hearing, you’ll need to check a few items off your to-do list before then, including understanding the field sobriety tests conducted during your arrest and their potential impact on your case.
First, you may want to hire an attorney. The attorney can go over the next steps with you, so you aren’t left feeling overwhelmed or stressed about what to do next. Next, your attorney may advise you to attend a DUI School and/or a MADD Victim Impact Panel immediately. You’ll receive paperwork that proves your attendance and completion of either program, which you can show at your hearing.
You may be aware of the hardship driver’s license that is available for some DUI cases. In Florida, a first DUI may only need an Ignition Interlock at the judge’s discretion. However, if your BAC was at .15 or higher, or a minor was in your vehicle, you will likely need an Ignition Interlock for six months. If you install the Ignition Interlock and are eligible, you can receive this hardship driver’s license so you can drive again.
The Administrative Hearing — Florida DUI Laws and Consequences
The administrative hearing plays a role in determining the fate of your driver’s license and driving privileges. A first DUI conviction in Florida can result in a license revocation period ranging from 180 days to one year, or even three years if bodily injury was involved.
Additionally, a first DUI conviction in Florida can result in significant fines. The exact amount may vary based on various factors, including your BAC at the time of the offense and whether there were any aggravating circumstances involved. In Florida, the legal limit for BAC is 0.08% for individuals 21 years and older. However, for drivers under 21, a BAC of 0.02% or higher can result in a DUI charge. It’s important to note that even a slight deviation from the legal limit can have severe consequences.
Typically, fines for a first DUI conviction can range from $500 to $1,000. However, if your BAC was .15 or higher or if a minor was present in your vehicle, the fines can increase to $1,000 to $2,000. These fines can have a significant impact on your finances, highlighting the importance of understanding and preparing for the financial consequences of a DUI conviction.
Get Driving Again — Applying for a Hardship License, Insurance, and Installing an IID
Applying for a hardship license in Florida after a DUI conviction is a crucial step towards regaining your driving privileges. A hardship license allows you to drive with certain restrictions, such as the mandatory use of an Ignition Interlock Device. To apply for a hardship license, you must complete the required period of license suspension, enroll in a DUI program, and provide the necessary documentation, including proof of enrollment and completion of the program.
Smart Start understands the intricacies of the application process and can provide guidance and support to ensure a smooth and successful application. Our team can assist you in understanding the specific requirements and deadlines, helping you navigate the application process with confidence.
Upon obtaining a hardship driver’s license, you’ll be able to resume driving with the assistance of an Ignition Interlock Device. Smart Start’s user-friendly devices are designed to ensure accurate and reliable results while promoting road safety. We provide comprehensive installation services, ensuring a seamless experience from start to finish. Our extensive network of locations across Florida means you’ll find a convenient installation center near you.
In addition to installing the Ignition Interlock Device, it’s crucial to secure FR-44 insurance, a requirement for DUI convictions in Florida. You need to maintain an FR-44 in Florida for three years, and it must be filed BEFORE your Ignition Interlock installation.
At Smart Start, we understand the urgency and importance of this step. Our team will guide you through the insurance application process, ensuring that you meet the necessary criteria and fulfill all obligations before proceeding with the installation of your Ignition Interlock Device. With our support, you can streamline the process and transition smoothly to the next phase of your journey.

What to Expect After a First Offense DUI in Arizona
Updated November 26, 2024
Do you know what the penalties for a first DUI in Arizona are? When you’re facing a DUI for the first time, it can be challenging to sort out the requirements for reinstating your license and getting your transportation back under control.
Installing an Ignition Interlock Device is one out of several conditions that you might have to complete in order to move past your DUI in Arizona. Ahead, we’ll provide general information about the Arizona DUI laws and requirements, a typical timeline for getting a first time DUI in Arizona, and what your next steps are.
Understanding Arizona DUI Laws
What Counts As a DUI in Arizona?
Arizona law maintains a tough stance on drunk driving and other DUI offenses. The Arizona Department of Public Safety website states a clear definition of DUI:
Note that, since DUI only requires “actual physical control” of a vehicle, you do not have to be actively driving the vehicle or on a public road to be arrested for DUI in Arizona. Additionally, if you have a BAC of .15 or higher when tested, you may be subject to a stricter set of “extreme DUI” penalties, and “aggravated DUI” sentencing may apply for circumstances such as DUI with a minor in the vehicle.
Penalties for a First Offense DUI in Arizona
A first time DUI offense in Arizona is usually not a felony. The exception is that you can sometimes be charged with both criminal penalties and administrative consequences. If you’ve been convicted of DUI, Arizona courts will require you to fulfill some or all of the conditions below.
Fines and Fees
According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, the fine for a first-offense DUI without aggravating factors is $1,250. However, this does not include court costs, towing fees, attorney fees, Ignition Interlock Device costs, or the costs of classes and treatment. Meanwhile, for those convicted of extreme DUI in Arizona, expect to pay a minimum of $2,500 as your base fine.
Jail Time and Minimum Sentencing Requirements
Arizona imposes a minimum jail sentence of ten days even for a driver’s first DUI. For an extreme DUI, the sentence is even heavier, with a minimum of 30 days in jail.
In many cases, you’ll be eligible for a suspended sentence on your first Arizona DUI. A suspended sentence means the court allows you to avoid some jail time if you complete certain conditions such as drug and alcohol treatment.
Eligibility for suspended sentencing depends on exactly what you’ve been charged with, so ask your attorney what options might be available to you. However, even with a suspended sentence, you will always be required to serve at least 24 hours in jail.
Driver’s License Suspension
Your license will be suspended and confiscated immediately upon arrest for DUI, or if you refuse to take a field test. The length of your suspension will depend on many factors such as whether you have had a DUI before or if you refused a field test.
Instead of a suspension, you may also be eligible to receive a Special Ignition Interlock Device Restricted License (SIIRDL). These special licenses allow you to drive during your suspension period so long as you install a Certified Ignition Interlock Device (CIID). Read on to learn more about Ignition Interlock Devices.
Obtaining an SR-22 Insurance Certificate
An SR-22 certificate verifies to the state that you carry the required amount of liability insurance. You’ll need to contact your insurance company to obtain an SR-22 and pay their required fee.
Drug and Alcohol Education and Treatment
The court may require you to obtain a drug and alcohol abuse screening after your first offense DUI in Arizona, possibly followed by classes and treatment programs. Screening, classes, and treatment will always be at your own expense. You also may be required to attend at least one Mothers Against Drunk Driving Victim Impact Panel.
Installing a Certified Ignition Interlock Device
All drivers convicted of DUI in Arizona are required to install an Ignition Interlock Device (IID). An IID connects to your vehicle’s ignition and requires you to provide a breath sample below a predetermined standard in order to start the vehicle. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, if the device detects alcohol on your breath at a concentration over .02, it will prevent the engine from starting.
Most people going through their first Arizona DUI will be required to keep their Ignition Interlock Device installed for 12 months. Note that your IID requirement period begins after your license suspension ends. Thus, you’ll need to serve your license suspension, then get the IID installed after.

Will I Need an Ignition Interlock in Arizona?
Are you wondering if you need an Ignition Interlock in Arizona? Smart Start has you covered! According to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), if you’ve been convicted of a DUI or another alcohol-related offense then you may be required to install an Interlock.
We know that getting a DUI can be confusing, but we are here to help. In this blog, we’ll go over what an Interlock Device is, when and why you would need to install one, what a Special Ignition Interlock Restricted Driver’s License is and how to qualify, how much an IID costs, and how to get one installed!
What is an Ignition Interlock Device?
An Ignition Interlock Device (IID) is a small device that is installed in a vehicle to prevent the driver from operating it while under the influence of alcohol. The device is connected to the vehicle’s ignition system and requires the driver to provide a breath sample before starting the engine. They are designed to help prevent repeat offenses and keep the roads safer for everyone. 18,041 drivers were arrested for DUIs in Arizona in 2019.
If the breath sample indicates a breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) above a certain limit, the engine will not start. The device will also require the driver to provide breath samples at random intervals while driving to ensure that they remain sober. An IID will never turn the engine off while you are driving, even if alcohol is detected.
Do I need to install an Ignition Interlock?
Ignition Interlock Devices are often required by law for individuals who have been convicted of a DUI (driving under the influence) or other alcohol-related offenses. The Arizona legal requirements for installing an Ignition Interlock Device vary depending on the specifics of your case. However, in general, if you are stopped for driving under the influence and a test shows that you have an alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent and you will lose your driving privileges and to reinstate them you will need to install an Ignition Interlock.
To make it simple, here are the factors involved that may result in an Ignition Interlock requirement.
It’s important to choose a reliable Ignition Interlock provider to ensure that you can regain your driving privileges safely and effectively. That’s where Smart Start comes in – with discreet devices and 24/7 customer service, you can feel confident in your choice to work with us to install and maintain your IID.
What is a Special Ignition Interlock Restricted Driver’s License?
A SIIRDL (Special Ignition Interlock Restricted Driver’s License) allows you to drive to and from work, school, and home only with an Ignition Interlock Device. A full list of approved destinations is on the Arizona MVD site. Any type of traffic violation voids the SIIRDL.
Keep in mind that the period with your SIIRDL does not count toward any other required period with an Ignition Interlock. Once you complete the SIIRDL period, you may or may not be required to apply for the Ignition Interlock license.

Can I Still Drink Alcohol with an Ignition Interlock Device?
If you’re wondering whether you can drink alcohol if you have an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) installed in your vehicle, the answer is not as straightforward as you might think. At Smart Start, we receive many questions about drinking and driving, and the role that the IID plays in helping individuals who have been convicted of a DUI.
What is an IID and what does it do?
First, let’s talk about what an IID is and what it does. A Smart Start Ignition Interlock Device is a small device that is installed in a vehicle to prevent a driver from starting the engine if they have been drinking alcohol. The IID measures the alcohol level in the driver’s breath, and if it detects that the level is above the legal limit, the engine will not start. The IID also requires random retests while the vehicle is in operation to ensure that the driver does not consume alcohol while driving.
But can I still drink if I have an IID installed?
Now, back to the question at hand: can you drink alcohol with an IID installed in your vehicle? The short answer is maybe. The IID is designed to prevent a driver from operating a vehicle if they have been drinking, so you need to make sure all alcohol has left your system before you can drive again. You can read our blog about how long after drinking can you pass an Interlock test for more information. What are the consequences of drinking and driving with an IID?
If you are required to have an IID installed in your vehicle, it is important to understand that any consumption of alcohol can result in a violation of your IID program. A violation can have serious consequences, including an extension of your IID requirement, fines, and even the loss of your driving privileges.
At Smart Start, we understand that having an IID installed in your vehicle can be challenging. Our goal is to help individuals who have been convicted of a DUI to regain their independence and their ability to drive safely. We offer reliable, accurate, and easy-to-use IID devices that are approved by the courts and DMVs in all states across the country.
If you have questions about drinking and driving, or about the role that the IID plays in helping individuals who have been convicted of a DUI, don’t hesitate to contact us at Smart Start. Our expert Program Advisors are here to help you navigate this process and get back on the road safely and legally. Remember, never drink and drive, and always drive responsibly.
