Updated June 10, 2025
Once you’ve completed the requirements of your Ignition Interlock Device program, you’ll probably start wondering about how to remove your Interlock Device. It’s a quick and easy process that just requires you to schedule a device removal appointment at your Smart Start service center.
Before you schedule an appointment, however, it’s important to check your state’s requirements to verify that you meet all of the conditions. Below is a state-by-state breakdown of key steps to take before you schedule your appointment for removing your Interlock Device.
Click on your state button to go to your state section:
Please Note: If you remove your device before completing the requirements of your IID program, your driving privileges may be suspended or canceled, and any fees paid will be non-refundable.
This guide provides information on how to get an Ignition Interlock Device removed from your vehicle. In many jurisdictions, getting your driving privileges restored is a separate process that requires different steps. Contact your monitoring authority to learn about specific requirements.

As an alternative, you can contact your State Authority to receive authorization for removal.
For administrative Ignition Interlock orders (the Alabama Department of Public Safety (DPS), as a condition of reinstatement: You will need a Clearance of Suspension Notice and/or your driver’s license without the Ignition Interlock restrictions.

During this call, you’ll be able to check your removal date eligibility and verify that you’ve completed the required paperwork, paid all fines, and completed an approved DUI program. Upon receiving authorization, you may contact your local Smart Start service center to schedule the removal appointment.
