Are you facing DUI or DWI charges and need to choose an Ignition Interlock provider? When deciding which company to choose, it’s important to know what questions to ask.
You will find that there are a variety of providers who boast low costs or that they have many locations for their customers’ convenience but fall short in supporting you throughout your program.
So, how do you find the right Ignition Interlock provider among all your choices? Here are the top 4 questions you should ask while choosing an Ignition Interlock Provider.
1. Is This a Reputable Ignition Interlock Company?
How long has the provider been around? Has it been two or 20 years? Do they follow state requirements, and do they meet updated federal Ignition Interlock Device (IID) standards?
When you choose an Ignition Interlock company that’s been in business for a while, you’ll find that the staff is more knowledgeable with the correct answers. For example, they can assist you in collecting the proper paperwork and forms for your IID program.
It helps to know a company has been installing Ignition Interlock devices for years rather than just a few months. Providers with established businesses also may have more robust and reliable technology in their devices, such as alcohol-specific fuel sensors.
When you have found a company you know has the experience, it’s still important to read many reviews. Most IID companies have mixed reviews, but if most of a company’s reviews are negative, consider that.
2. Can The Provider Install an IID On My Vehicle?
Although this may seem an obvious question, you’ll want to do your utmost diligence in ensuring that your provider can install their IID into your vehicle, especially if it is a newer one.
Cars have advanced over the years with the rise of push-start, stop-and-start/eco and hybrid vehicles. Depending on what you drive, you’ll want to choose a company that’s been keeping up with the ever-changing world of advanced technology in vehicles.
Smart Start understands the importance of a seamless Interlock Device installation. Our technicians are experts at installing IIDs on all types of vehicles, including hybrid and electric models.

3. When Is Customer Support Available?
Imagine that you’re having issues testing with your IID, and it’s 10 p.m. Let’s also tack on the fact that it’s New Years Eve. You pull over to call customer service, but it just so happens that agents are only available on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Not helpful at all, is it?
An IID company should be there for you 24/7 during your program, even during weekends and holidays. A good customer service team can help you with any issues, if a violation happens, or with any other situations where you need help immediately.
Smart Start is open 24/7, 365 days a year. Our trained advisors will be happy to help you with any questions you have, at any time.
We also have supportive online communities on Reddit and other social media platforms where you can ask anonymous questions and get quick answers from us and other IID users.
4. How Much Will an IID Cost Me?
The DUI/DWI process can be costly. So, it’s important that you find an Interlock provider that will be transparent and fair about their pricing.
When vetting an Ignition Interlock provider, make sure to ask about their installation fees and what other costs are included during your first visit, such as paying for the first month’s lease. What’s included in the regular calibration fees? Are there removal fees? If you need to transfer your IID from one vehicle to another, what’s the cost? Do you have to pay for violation lockouts? In addition, does your provider offer financial hardship options in your area? Some providers may have hidden fees within their programs, so it is essential to ask these questions explicitly.
Smart Start has no hidden fees which will save you hundreds each year. While pricing varies by state, you can find our most up to update general Ignition Interlock pricing on our website or contact our Program Advisors to get a quote today!
Some Ignition Interlock providers require longer contracts than others. It’s important ask about their contract policy because if you have to opt out of that contract early, it could be extremely expensive. At Smart Start, we offer a monthly lease, with no long-term commitment allowing you to finish your program on your terms.

3 Steps to Follow Before Installing an Ignition Interlock Device
Are you under a court order or state requirement to install an Ignition Interlock Device? Do you also have to obtain a restricted driver license (also known as an Ignition Interlock Limited License) or permit before or after installing the device? An Ignition Interlock system is usually the first step in getting your driving privileges restored.
But let’s take a few steps back.
There are a lot of moving pieces, and your DUI, DWI or OWI case can get confusing fast. Let’s go over these 3 things to be aware of so you can move forward with getting your driving privileges reinstated with a required Ignition Interlock Device, regardless of your situation.
1. Check Your Driving Privilege Status
The first thing you want to make sure you know is your driving privilege status. Speak with your court and/or state office, like the Department of Public Safety (DPS), Department of Licensing (DOL), or Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), to understand what your driving status is, and when that may change due to your DUI arrest. Smart Start, the leading Ignition Interlock provider, offers helpful information regarding your Ignition Interlock system, but for legal questions such as your driving privileges, it is best to consult with a legal representative, or your oversight authority with your DUI.
2. Find Out When You Need To Do the Ignition Interlock Device Installation
Second, who is requiring you to do the Ignition Interlock Device installation, so you understand your situation. Is the device under a court requirement, or as a condition of a restricted driver license? When do you have to install the Ignition Interlock? Once you know why and when you are installing the Ignition Interlock, it’ll be easier to pinpoint who to go to for answers. You can also check our state-specific Ignition Interlock blogs to make sure you are installing the device at the right date! If you have any questions, you can always call our Ignition Interlock Program Advisors and they will help you to locate the right information to get you started.
3. Driver’s License Reinstatement – Status and Installing Your Ignition Interlock
Now that you know your current driving privilege status and when you need to install your Ignition Interlock, and with whom, here’s the last step. You will need to find out what your driver’s license status is in relation to the Interlock requirements of your Ignition Interlock. Do you need to visit your state office to apply for a permit or an Ignition Interlock restricted license? If you evaluated the two steps above, you should have an idea of when to acquire this driver’s license, whether it’s before or after the Ignition Interlock installation. We know this process can be confusing. If you have any questions, feel free to contact our trained Program Advisors who are experts at navigating this process.
Finally, let’s go over the IID installation appointment.
If your driving status is still valid, you can drive yourself to a Smart Start service center to install the Ignition Interlock by the date you need it in your motor vehicle. If your driving status is not valid, arrange for alternate transportation to get your vehicle to the Smart Start service center. For example, you could have your spouse drive your vehicle to the service center or tow your motor vehicle. If you speak Spanish, we also have bilingual technicians at select service locations.
Above all else, remember that you have someone who can answer your questions with your DUI case. If it’s a court order, make sure to ask your probation officer or other judicial authority who oversees your DUI case. If you need an Ignition Interlock under your state office, in most states, you can check your driving privilege status by calling them or even checking their site, such as theTexas DPS.
Can You Install Your Interlock Device Yourself?
No, you cannot. It’s required to have your Interlock device installed professionally at a certified service provider’s center. Once installed, the device will be monitored, and any tampering will be logged and trigger an alarm, service call, or vehicle lockout.
Ready to Get Back on the Road?
Now that you have a better idea of your current driving status, it may be time to install your Ignition Interlock now. Smart Start is the leading Ignition Interlock provider that can accommodate your schedule, whether it’s next month, tomorrow or even today! How Can I Find an Affordable Ignition Interlock Device?
Finding an affordable Ignition Interlock Device (IID) can seem impossible, especially with all the fees and extra costs associated with a drunk-driving charge. Here at Smart Start, we have a low-cost Interlock guarantee. But we also understand that an affordable Ignition Interlock is worth nothing if you’re getting crummy service, a shady provider, and payment plans that wreck your budget.
Here are four important things to consider when you’re shopping for an Ignition Interlock Device:
Transparent Ignition Interlock Costs
We have built our reputation on hard work and integrity. That’s a big reason why we’re head and shoulders above the competition. Our customer reviews speak for themselves.
You want to make sure your Ignition Interlock really is “affordable”. That means no hidden charges, no administrative fees, and no last-minute surprises. Look for a company that is totally transparent about what your Ignition Interlock program will cost from beginning to end.
Remember that each state has its own fines and fees that are separate from your Ignition Interlock provider. But after that, make sure your Ignition Interlock provider isn’t piling on unnecessary charges. That’s why we have a simple, affordable monthly lease instead of a bunch of different fees like other Interlock companies.
Each person’s Interlock journey is unique to them and so the Ignition Interlock Device costs will vary as well. The total cost of an Ignition Interlock Device will depend on where you are located, state requirements, state laws, and your type of vehicle. For example, the fee may be higher for hybrids, push-to-start ignitions or remote starts. You can find more information about how much an Ignition Interlock Device will cost you on our Ignition Interlock Cost page.
Smart Start provides affordable Ignition Interlock Devices with unsurpassed quality. That means quick and easy testing with attractive, discreet equipment. Essentially, we’ll partner with you to make sure you have a successful, seamless program at the lowest cost. That makes DUI monitoring easier on you.
If you need financial help to afford the cost of an Ignition Interlock Device, talk to our Program Advisors about how to apply to the indigent program in your state. Most states will have individual programs that provide financial assistance for their Ignition Interlock program.
Affordable Ignition Interlock Is About the Whole Program
Remember that you’re paying for more than just an Ignition Interlock device. There are other factors that really set companies apart, and help you make sure you get the most for your buck. You want a reliable Ignition Interlock, but that means looking beyond the device.
You’re looking for a program that is simple and convenient. That means:
That’s what sets Smart Start apart. Because it’s not just about an affordable Ignition Interlock device; it’s about getting the best Ignition Interlock program for your money. That means a smart design with the resources to back it up.
Payment Plans That Work with Your Budget
At Smart Start, we believe that an affordable Ignition Interlock shouldn’t have to include a long-term contract. That’s why we offer a monthly lease, with no long-term commitment. We also believe that no two budgets are alike, and no payment plan fits everyone.
Our Ignition Interlock clients have found flexibility through our unique Client Portal mobile app. It allows them not just to make their payments through their phone, but also:
Client Portal app is free, and easily available through the App Store or Google play.
Best Customer Service Available
Our customer care agents, known as Program Advisors, are probably the first people you will interact with who represent Smart Start. We believe human service is of utmost importance to our clients. We want to help you get through your program easily and successfully, so our customer care center is an all-encompassing customer support system.
We want to make sure we are there for you if something happens with your Interlock Device. You can call our number to easily make a payment, ask questions, receive help, find your nearest service center and anything else to make sure you are getting through your program.
We also have blogs available on a wide range of topics from how does an Ignition Interlock Device work, what to do when you get a violation, to how to take care of your IID in cold weather. We are always updating our website information and writing more blogs to help you have the information you need at the click of a button.
Learn More About the Smart Start Advantage

Can I Switch Ignition Interlock Providers
Not happy with your current Ignition Interlock Device (IID) provider? Tired of hidden fees and terrible service? You don’t have to stick with a company that you feel you can’t rely on. If you’re in this situation, it’s time to switch Ignition Interlock providers.
Need to Switch IID Providers?
Smart Start makes it easy for individuals who’d like to switch to us from another IID company. In fact, we will set up your installation appointment on the same day as your device removal from your former vendor. That way, you can get back on the road with a reliable IID in no time. In addition, this means you won’t have a gap in your reports to your State Authority. Clients also value our month-by-month lease fee instead of being stuck in a long-term contract.
Keep in mind that you cannot drive your vehicle without an Ignition Interlock! Ask a friend or family member to take you in your vehicle to your new provider’s service center.
Check out our State Laws and FAQs page to find out more information!

New Colorado DUI Law Allows Immediate License Reinstatement with Interlock Device
Have you been convicted of a DUI in Colorado? As of January 1, 2023, you may immediately qualify for an early license reinstatement with an interlock-restricted license thanks to a new Colorado DUI law.
Smart Start is here to help you get back on road as soon as possible with our Ignition Interlock Device (IID). We offer the best Ignition Interlock in Colorado. You can count on support from caring, compassionate specialists who understand everything you need to know about Ignition Interlock in Colorado. The new Colorado DUI law, Alcohol Monitoring for Impaired Driving Offenders or SB22-055, makes the following changes:
Immediate License Reinstatement
Instead of having a mandatory one-month license suspension, SB22-055 grants immediate license reinstatement with an interlock-restricted license. An interlock-restricted license permits you to drive a vehicle only if it is equipped with an Ignition Interlock Device (IID). Learn more about interlock-restricted licenses here.
This means those convicted of a DUI can have an Ignition Interlock Device installed immediately. Fill out the form below to get a quote or call (800) 831-3299 to get started on this process today!
Alcohol Monitor Requirement
The new Colorado DUI law also requires 90 days of continuous sobriety monitoring for people sentenced to probation following a third or subsequent offense, or a felony offense, for DUI, DUI per se, or DWAI. This means those sentenced will be required to wear an ankle monitor. This unit is a condition of release on probation and would be effective once the convicted individual is on probation.
These changes only apply to convictions after January 1st. It does not apply to any convictions before this date since this bill does not have a retroactive period.
About the Bill
Congressmen John Cooke, Chris Hansen, Dylan Roberts, and Hugh McKean were the prime sponsors of the Bill. Though the bill was approved on June 8th, 2022, it didn’t go into effect until January 1st, 2023.
Senator Cooke, a retired sheriff for Weld County told Colorado Newsline that he believes this law is making it safer to drive after a DUI. “This is a way to reliably ensure that people who have DUI convictions or pending DUI cases are only driving if they’re sober.”
Colorado Ignition Interlock
According to the CDC, Ignition Interlock Devices reduce repeat DUI offenses by 67%. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Colorado says interlock devices stopped 15,365 attempts to drive drunk in Colorado in 2020.

Ignition Interlock Devices and Cold Weather: 5 Helpful Tips
With extreme winter storms and cold weather on the rise, you may wonder how to keep your Ignition Interlock Device working despite the cold temperatures. You may have even received a “Too Cold” error from your device in recent weeks.
Smart Start Ignition Interlocks are designed to withstand cold weather. If your device is too cold, it will start heating up and the screen will display “HEATING.” The Interlock Device usually takes about three to five minutes to heat up to its proper temperature. However, there are other things you can do to make sure you are on the road and moving quickly.
Smart Start has created this guide to give you five simple tools to keep you moving and your Ignition Interlock Device working, even in the cold.
How to Keep Your Ignition Interlock Device Working in the Cold
Tip #1: Bring Your Head Unit Inside with You
In most states, you can disconnect the head unit from the curly cord to prevent your Interlock Device from getting too cold. Doing this will help you avoid the “Too Cold” error from your device.
*Remember, you must turn off your car before you disconnect the head unit.
IMPORTANT! Wisconsin and New York do not allow you to disconnect the head unit from the curly cord. If you live in either of these states, do NOT disconnect your device.
Tip #2: Check Your
Car Battery
Making sure your car battery is working properly is another way you can ensure you will get to your destination swiftly. Your Smart Start Ignition Interlock can check your battery voltage for you. Just press the # sign and the number 2 on your keypad. If your results are below 12 volts, you may have issues providing a test. Keep this in mind if your results are near or below 12 volts!
Tip #3: Insulate and Elevate Your Interlock Device
If you are not allowed to disconnect your head unit or would rather leave it in the car, another way to keep your Interlock Device working correctly is to keep your device wrapped in something to insulate it from the cold. Anything that fits snuggly around the Interlock Device, such as a mitten or glove, will work. Making sure your device is not left on the ground but put in a cup holder, passenger seat, or console will help keep your device out of the way of moisture.
Tip #4: Keep Your Car Out of the Snow and Ice
Parking your car away from wind and snow can help ensure your Ignition Interlock will take less time to heat up. Any type of covered parking, even unheated, will protect your car and Interlock Device from cold weather-related damage.
Tip #5: Create a Barrier for Your Windshield
If you don’t have covered parking available, another way to protect your car and Interlock Device from the cold is to create a windshield barrier. There are black snow guards or frost guards available in stores, but you can make one out of household items such as a blanket, cloth, or sheet. Doing this will prevent snow and ice from piling on your windshield.

How to Use an Igntion Interlock Device
Smart Start understands that using an Ignition Interlock can be a change of pace for some people. If you have had your Ignition Interlock (IID, BAIID) installed but still feel unsure how to use it, don’t fret. Let us explain exactly how to use our device.
Starting your Vehicle
Ignition Interlocks Devices, also called an IID or a BAIID, require you to blow a clean breath sample into the device before you start your vehicle. If you choose not to blow into your device, or if your device detects alcohol, then your vehicle’s engine will not start.
Blowing Into Your Device
Sometimes blowing a proper breath sample can take some getting used to. Thankfully, Smart Start has created our Ignition Interlock Devices to require a very simple “blow” technique. To blow an adequate breath sample, all you have to do is:
– Turn your vehicle’s key to the “ON” position, or for a push-to-start vehicle, press the button once
– The device will make a sound and prompt “BLOW” on the screen
– Blow into the device until you hear a “click”
– Your results will follow
*Some states require different blow patterns. Your state may require one long blow or a blow-hum. Our Smart Start technicians and state-certified agents will be able to tell you about your state-specific requirements.
How Often Do I Have to Blow Into my Ignition Interlock?
To ensure that you have not been drinking since starting your vehicle, every state requires “random rolling retests”. This means that your Ignition Interlock will prompt you by making a sound and displaying the word “BLOW” on its screen.
We Care About Your Safety
Your safety is our priority. It is important that you are always pulled over while blowing into your IID. It should also be noted that our devices will NEVER stop your engine while driving, even if you were to blow a violation.
If you are still having trouble using your Smart Start device, we have plenty of videos to help you.
