Understanding Rhode Island DUI Requirements

Basic DUI Requirements

We know that navigating a DUI can be overwhelming. Understanding the requirements and process after an alcohol related driving offense in Rhode Island is an important step to getting back on the road. We’ve put together some general information to help you get started.

The Rhode Island DMV lists the penalties for a first-time DUI in Rhode Island, which can include:

  • Up to one year in prison
  • Up to $500 fine
  • Up to 18 months license suspension
  • $500 highway safety assessment
  • $86 fee
  • Participation in an Alcohol Education Program

Penalties can be even more severe if it’s not your first DUI, or if your arrest involved a crash with injuries. You may also be required to install an Ignition Interlock Device on any vehicles that you drive.

License Reinstatement

While your license is suspended, you may be eligible to petition the court for a hardship license, which allows you to continue driving at specified times of day for purposes such as employment or education. You’ll usually need to get an Ignition Interlock installed on your vehicle before you can get a hardship license. See the RI DMV’s Hardship License page for more information.

When you’ve completed the conditions of your DUI program and you’re ready to have your full license reinstated, you’ll complete the process through the Adjudication Office of the RI DMV. Check the Alcohol Reinstatement Fees page to see the specific fees you’ll be required to pay.
