We know that navigating a DUI can be overwhelming. Understanding the requirements and process after an alcohol related driving offense in Georgia is an important step to getting back on the road. We’ve put together some general information to help you get started.
Per the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, penalties for a first-offense DUI in Georgia can include:
- Up to one year of potential jail time
- Fine of at least $300, up to $1,000
- License suspension of up to one year
- Mandatory minimum 40 hours of community service
- $210 license reinstatement fee
Penalties increase significantly if you have one or more previous DUIs. For a third offense within five years of a second offense, you might be subject to up to $5,000 in fines, a five-year license revocation, and even having your name and photo published in a local newspaper at your own expense. You may also be required do attend a DUI Risk Reduction class at a Certified DUI School.
The court may also require you to install an Ignition Interlock Device on the vehicle you drive. Under Georgia law, an IID is mandatory if it’s your second DUI within five years.
