How Do I Get an Ignition Interlock Device Installed?

In most states, one of your first goals will be getting an Ignition Interlock Device installed, so we at Smart Start want to make the process as easy as possible. Here is a list of general information that you will need: If you drive more than one vehicle, each will have to have an IID. Also, in some states, you’ll need a notarized statement from the vehicle owner if you are using one that is not under your name. You just confirmed your scheduled Interlock Device installation appointment at your nearest Smart Start service center, so you are on the right track to getting back on the road again. But what do you need to take with you to your installation appointment? Bringing the right materials with you to your Interlock Device install appointment is very important and can save you a headache if you do not bring the right items. Your installation will be done by a trained technician who is an Ignition Interlock expert. They’ll do a quick, clean installation, then provide hands-on instruction that makes it easy to use your device. Your installation appointment will usually only take up to an hour. Smart Start recommends blocking off at least two hours, since some vehicles may require a longer period to install the Interlock device. Alabama IID Installation Requirements
Alabama requires that you bring the following to your Ignition Interlock installation appointment:
- Photo ID
- Vehicle registration or proof of purchase or ownership
- Payment for installation and any applicable fees
* Bring this waiver form filled out and signed by the vehicle’s owner if you need to use someone else’s vehicle for your Interlock program.
Alaska
Alaska IID Installation Requirements
Alaska requires that you bring the following to your Ignition Interlock installation appointment:
- Payment for installation and first month’s lease
- Photo ID
Arizona
Arizona IID Installation Requirements
Arizona requires that you bring the following to your Ignition Interlock installation appointment:
- Photo ID
- Letter from the Arizona Motor Vehicle Department (MVD).
- Vehicle registration proof
- Payment for installation and your first month’s lease
* If you need to use someone else’s vehicle for your Ignition Interlock, the vehicle owner must be present at the time of installation and complete a ‘consent to install’ form.
Arkansas

California IID Installation Requirements
California requires that you bring the following to your Ignition Interlock installation appointment:
- Two forms of ID, and one must be with a photo

- Either a California DMV or a court order showing you need an Ignition Interlock
* If you need to use someone else’s vehicle, you’ll need a letter of permission notarized by the vehicle owner.

New York
New York IID Installation Requirements
New York requires that you bring the following to your Ignition Interlock installation appointment:

- Name and policy number of your vehicle insurance
- The VIN of all vehicles that you own or routinely drive. Then a statement disclosing the names of all other individuals who operate said vehicles.
- Payment for installation and any applicable fees
* If you need to use someone else’s vehicle, you must provide a notarized affidavit from the registered owner of the vehicle.
North Carolina
North Carolina IID Installation Requirements
North Carolina requires that you bring the following to your Ignition Interlock installation appointment:
- Two forms of ID (one with a picture)
- A piece of mail for proof of address
- Any court/DMV paperwork pertaining to your case
- The vehicle registration
- Proof of vehicle insurance
- Payment for installation and any applicable fees
* If you are going to use someone else’s vehicle, you’ll need a letter of permission from the vehicle owner that states it is OK to install the Interlock into their vehicle.
North Dakota
