WARN, FAIL and VIOLATION on Your Interlock Device

At Smart Start, a successful and seamless Interlock Device program is our number one goal for all our clients. We do understand, however, that a warn, fail or violation could occur as a test result on your Device.

So, what do these types of results mean?

WARN

A warn reading means that alcohol is present in your breath sample, but was below your state’s fail level. The Interlock Device will not stop your vehicle following a warn result. Be cautious, however. It is possible that you could fail subsequent tests if you decide to continue driving.

FAIL

A fail result means that alcohol is detected at or above your state’s specific fail level. It may not mean that you are at the violation level indicated in your state’s standards. VIOLATION

A violation is a little different than a fail reading.

Violations could mean the Interlock Device detected alcohol at or above your state’s fail level, but there are other reasons as well. For example, if you missed any of your tests, or the Device detected tampering, circumventing, bypassing or disabling of the Device, this will be a violation result.

An example of a Violation Lockout screen reading on your Interlock. Some states may not list a countdown on your Interlock Device. This means you will need to visit a Smart Start service center.

Keep in mind that if the allowable number of violations in your state occurs, your Device will go into Lockout Mode. Some states require that the Lockout Mode occurs if you receive one violation.
