Why Smart Start’s Ignition Interlock Camera is Your Best Choice
If you need a camera to go alongside your Ignition Interlock, you’ll want to choose your vendor wisely. There’s several options in vendors out there, but careful research will show you that not all are the same.
A Discreet and Small Camera
Smart Start’s camera is discreet. It fits in the palm of your hand (just like our Interlocks), and could look like a dash cam to other drivers.
So, if you need to have a camera and you’re choosing an Ignition Interlock vendor now, why is Smart Start’s one to pay attention to?
Here’s why. Our cameras can adapt to any state’s requirement so you can complete your program successfully. For example, some states require a wide-angle lens or narrow-angle lens as part of their camera’s requirement. Whichever the case, Smart Start will be able to accommodate.
For our clients’ privacy, we ensure any add-on accessory you must have for your Ignition Interlock program is as non-invasive as possible.
Don’t know if you need a camera? You may want to check with your point of contact who is monitoring you for your Interlock program. Smart Start is not the entity that requires clients to use cameras. Cameras are a state and/or court-ordered regulation, depending on where you live.
Do you need an Ignition Interlock? Smart Start’s here to help with other 25 years’ experience. When you reach out to our Customer Care Center, we can provide you a quote before your appointment. We’ll also schedule you for your Interlock installation day at your nearest Smart Start service center.

Does a Camera Record During My Ignition Interlock?
For some state or court requirements, individuals may need to use a camera during their Ignition Interlock Device program. But if you’re wondering whether the camera records you as part of your Ignition Interlock program, the answer is simple: No. Never.
When Do You Need a Camera For Your Ignition Interlock?
Does an Interlock Device need a camera? That’s up to your state or local jurisdiction. Not all state Ignition Interlock laws require a camera as part of your program, but be sure you’re in compliance with whatever the requirement may be. Cameras are add-on accessories, and are state or court-regulated. An Ignition Interlock provider should never tell you that a camera is required if the state says it isn’t.
What Does The Interlock Camera Record?
mart Start’s cameras only snap a photo while you are taking your breath tests, and nothing more. We will never use the Ignition Interlock camera to record you. When you take your test on your Interlock Device, the camera will snap a quick photo, and then it is done. You’ll also get your photo taken during random retests that you’ll perform after you start the vehicle.
Smart Start’s camera is a very small, cube-like shape that will stick to your windshield. It is not very noticeable, just like our discreet Ignition Interlock Device.
Why are Interlock Cameras Beneficial?
There are many benefits to Ignition Interlock cameras which is why more states require Interlock cameras and modems. Ignition Interlock cameras, first and foremost, enhance accountability. They ensure that the driver adheres to the rules and stays alcohol-free while on the road, fostering personal growth and rehabilitation.
Moreover, Ignition Interlock cameras act as a formidable deterrent against drunk driving. Knowing that your actions are under constant surveillance is often enough to discourage individuals from driving under the influence.
These cameras also safeguard innocent lives on the road, ensuring everyone reaches their destination safely. In essence, these devices bring forth the power of legal compliance, evidence for disputes, proactive monitoring, and, above all, the promise of improved road safety.
Choose Smart Start As Your Interlock Device Provider
When you visit a Smart Start service center for your calibration appointment, your Interlock and camera will be “refreshed.” Our qualified technicians do this service to make sure your Interlock and camera are working properly.
Smart Start is here for you to successfully and easily complete your Ignition Interlock Device program. That doesn’t include spying on you with a video camera.

Do I have to use this camera with my Ignition Interlock?
Not all Ignition Interlock requirements include a camera. But when it does, this add-on accessory can be more beneficial than you may initially think.
A camera requirement for your program is regulated by your state, not the Ignition Interlock vendor.
The Benefit of a Camera
Do I have to have a camera may be the wrong mindset when considering this important aspect to your Interlock program. Your camera (which is a small, cube-like shape that attaches to your windshield), is fool-proof when it comes to detecting who is taking the Interlock test.
Every time you take your test, the camera will snap a quick shot of you testing with the Device. Keep in mind that our cameras do NOT record you at all! They are answering the question of who is taking the test, not to record you throughout your program.
For example, if you are sharing your vehicle with someone else and they blew a violation, the camera’s snapshot of the test will determine it was not you who took that particular breath test. The picture from your camera can be the difference between a longer suspension, (or even jail time), or having the violation excused with no penalties.
* Important! Every state and court has different Interlock regulations. Check with your State Authority for more information and to clarify anything to do with your camera during your program.
In addition, it’s also harder for someone to tamper with their Interlock with a camera. With this feature, you will be able to successfully and easily complete your Interlock program.
Maintain a Normal Routine with an Interlock
Smart Start’s goal is to Separate Drinking From Driving® and keep our roadways safe. Our Ignition Interlock Devices also allow clients to carry on with their lives by continuing to drive and maintaining a routine such as going to work.
Do you need an Interlock Device? No matter what, Smart Start is here for you 24/7/365 throughout your program – including weekends and holidays. We can provide you a quote and set up an install appointment at your nearest Smart Start service center.

Smart Start’s Training Video – Ignition Interlock Device (ENGLISH)
Here is a transcript of your Ignition Interlock Training Video:
Hi. Welcome to this Smart Start Ignition Interlock Training Video, and thank you for selecting us as your Interlock provider. Choosing our Interlock means you chose convenience, affordability and an easy-to-use device manufactured by the leading company in alcohol monitoring technology. Remember that we are available for you 24/7 through this process. Yes, that’s right. Our customer care center is available to you at any time, every single day, including weekends and holidays. To start, in this training video, we will show you how to use your Interlock so you can complete your program successfully and easily. We are looking forward to getting you back on the road safely, so let’s get started.
Let’s go over how your Interlock works.
First, your vehicle’s key needs to be turned to the “ON” position, or for vehicles with push-button ignitions, the button needs to be pressed once with your foot off the brake pedal. The Smart Start Interlock displays ‘BLOW’ on its screen once your car is on, and will beep.
It is important that you rinse your mouth with water before providing any breath test. When taking a test, the Interlock requires you to have your lips sealed around the entire mouthpiece to minimize incomplete results, and ensure a successful test. Please note that the blowing pattern on your Device differs from state to state, and is very easy. Hands-on training will be provided by your service technician when you arrive for your installation.
There are 4 possible results based on your breath test: PASS, WARN, FAIL or VIOLATION.
Your Interlock’s screen will display PASS when no alcohol is detected in your breath sample. Now, you can start the vehicle.
A WARN indicates that alcohol was detected in your breath sample, but was below your state’s fail level. A WARN will still allow you to start your vehicle. However, it is possible you may fail subsequent tests if you decide to drive following a WARN result.
A FAIL or VIOLATION result indicates that alcohol was detected at or above your state’s specific fail or violation level. You will not be able to start your vehicle if you receive a FAIL or VIOLATION result. All states have their own requirements following a failed or violation breath test. Your Smart Start service technician can provide you with general information about the Ignition Interlock program in your state. Your Smart Start service technician will also inform you of the different alcohol levels during your hands-on training.
Once on the road, your Interlock will at some point prompt you to perform a random re-test. When the unit prompts for this test, the screen will display the word BLOW, and will also display a countdown of the time allowance remaining. To ensure safe handling of the vehicle, Smart Start recommends pulling the vehicle over and putting it in park while taking the test. Your Interlock will NEVER stop your vehicle during a rolling test. Please note that missing or failing a rolling test, or rolling re-test, could result in a VIOLATION.
You may encounter ABORT messages while attempting to take a test. These ABORT messages will help guide you towards successfully providing a breath sample into the device. ABORTS are not FAILS and do not affect the readings generated by the device.
The Interlock will display ‘BLOW LONGER’ if your air pressure is not sufficient or you did not blow long enough. Make sure you take a deep breath before starting your test, maintain a steady airflow, or increase the airflow pressure for the duration of the breath test. Once the device resets with the word ‘BLOW’, you may try again.
If you receive the ABORT message ‘MOUTH CLOSER,’ this indicates your lips are not completely sealed around the mouthpiece or close enough to the base of the mouthpiece. Once the device resets with the word ‘BLOW,’ you may try again.
The ‘BLOW SOFTER’ message means that you are blowing too hard. Decrease the amount of air pressure when you provide a breath sample, and again, once the device resets with the word, ‘BLOW’, you may try again.
The ‘ABORT TAMPER’ message means that something is blocking the flow of air through the Device. Blockage can be caused by items that have been blown into the Device or by placing your hand over the vent. Check for any obstacles, remove them and blow again. If you inhale while your mouth is on the mouthpiece right before you provide the breath test, you may receive a ‘DON’T INHALE’ message. Remember, when taking a test, take a deep breath away from the mouthpiece, and then exhale directly into the mouthpiece.
We offer this Ignition Interlock training video because our is to help you be successful. We do recognize that a VIOLATION can occur during your program. In the next section of this video, we will go over what can happen when a VIOLATION occurs, and what to do.
In accordance with state or court requirements, the Device will record and log when VIOLATIONS occur. The number of VIOLATIONS that could trigger a LOCKOUT will differ from state to state. Some states only allow one VIOLATION before the device goes into LOCKOUT mode. Other states may provide more leeway. Once again, your Smart Start service technician can provide you with general information concerning what triggers a VIOLATION LOCKOUT in your state.
Here are the primary causes for a VIOLATION that may require you to return to a service center before your regularly scheduled service appointment.
Failure to pass any requested test may result in a VIOLATION. VIOLATIONS are also any attempts to tamper, circumvent, bypass or disable the Interlock and/or add-on equipment, meaning any unauthorized efforts to start the vehicle without providing an initial start-up test. Tampering, circumventing, bypassing or disabling of the Interlock and/or add-on equipment will result in a VIOLATION. In some states, this may result in a new criminal charge. If you are required in your state to have a camera installed in your vehicle. In each case, your Interlock will make a record of the event, and will be reported to your State Authority.
Per state or court requirements, your Interlock will trigger a LOCKOUT for one of two reasons.
Either all the allowable VIOLATIONS have occurred, or you have failed to service the Device prior to the grace period expiring. The grace period is the amount of time allotted to you before the Device enters LOCKOUT mode. The grace period leading up to permanent LOCKOUT will differ from state to state, but is typically within a range of zero to seven calendar days, after set appointment date. Most states require that you return to your service center on a 30 or 60-day interval to have information downloaded, and ensure that the device is calibrated within the state-required range. If you do not return for service by the specified service appointment date or date range, your Interlock will display SRVCLOCK with the hours and minutes remaining to permanent LOCKOUT. If you do not return for service within the stated grace period, the Device will LOCKOUT permanently. You will not be permitted to perform any tests until you have contacted one of our customer care specialists to receive an unlock code, or have your vehicle towed into the nearest service location. You would enter the code and drive directly to the nearest service center for download, calibration and reset. It is important to note that some states only allow services to be performed in your state, so please be mindful if you are traveling out of state.
If you exceed the number of VIOLATIONS, your device will display VIOLATION LOCK, and the device will provide the remaining hours and minutes to permanent LOCKOUT. Keep in mind that you will be expected to pay a LOCKOUT fee. Once the device grace period has expired, it will no longer prompt for a test, and you will be required to return to the service location for a device RESET. For your convenience, in some states, Smart Start can offer a remote, unlocking feature that can temporarily unlock your Interlock from a permanent LOCKOUT state for up to six hours. In some states, Smart Start may offer a second code at an additional charge. The unlock code does not disable any other functionality of the Device but still requires successful passing of all tests. This service by Smart Start is provided as an alternative to the towing of your vehicle. This one-time code is provided as a convenience to our customers in applicable states. Your service technician will make you aware if your state allows the use of the unlock code. It is necessary for you to drive your vehicle to the nearest Smart Start service location as soon as receive the code.
In this Ignition Interlock Training Video, we showed you how to use your Interlock, from your initial test to rolling tests, including incomplete tests, violations and lockouts – all necessary information for you to complete your program. You can now get back on the road safely. If you still have questions concerning your Interlock device, visit us our website FAQs , or call us anytime at 1-800-880-3394 to speak with a customer care specialist.
This training video, your user manual guide, your state laws on Interlocks, FAQ’s and more can also be found at SMARTSTARTINC.COM. We are here for you every step of the way throughout your Interlock program. Thank you again for choosing Smart Start to help you get back on the road safely.

Can I Travel out of State with an Interlock Device?
Are you on an Interlock Device program but need to travel out of state?
Can I travel out of state with an Interlock Device?
Although Smart Start does not regulate your case requirements (your court or state DMV does), we can assist you in providing the information you need to travel out of state with your IID.
Traveling out of state while having an Interlock is on a case-by-case basis, so it is a good idea to ask and confirm with your State Authority. You can also ask our customer care team when you call Smart Start. Some courts and/or DMV’s do not allow you to travel out of state while you are on an Interlock Device program. You’ll also need to make sure the state you are traveling to will recognize your restricted license.
Important tips
If you can travel out of state, make sure that you will not miss any scheduled calibration appointments at your Smart Start service center. If you have your vehicle and are out of town, you may be able to reschedule your appointment at a Smart Start location in that state. Make sure to reschedule your appointment ahead of time before you leave, if you have the option to.
Calibration appointments should be scheduled either every 30 or 60 days, depending on which state you live in. These appointments are mandatory so our licensed technicians can ‘refresh’ your Device. These appointments also ensure the Device is still operating properly for you.
If you go ahead and travel with an Interlock without consulting your State Authority, more consequences could occur for you! It is much better to be safe than sorry, and ask before making any travel plans out of state.

Can I Switch from an Interlock to a Portable Device, or Vice Versa?
Smart Start’s values have always revolved around customer commitment and service. Since 1992, we’ve been making sure that our products are always fast, easy and reliable for our clients.
If you are ordered to use an alcohol monitoring device, one question that may come to mind is if you can switch between an Interlock or portable unit.
Smart Start Devices
Currently, we have two Interlock Devices, the SSI-20/30™ and SSI-20/20™. We also provide clients our SMART Mobile when they are court-ordered to use a portable alcohol monitoring device. All Smart Start products use fuel cell technology, which is the most accurate, high-grade form of breath alcohol detection.
Can I switch between a portable device and an Interlock?
The answer is not a simple yes or no, but depends on your conditions and requirements. Some states, counties or State Authorities are very specific regarding which device you need to use.
For example, if you are ordered to have an Interlock for one year per your state’s DMV, they will insist you follow this requirement. Sometimes a portable device is ordered by a State Authority because they want testing throughout the day, every day.
Some conditions may even require you to use a portable device and an Interlock.
Whichever the case, Smart Start’s 24/7/365 customer care team can assist you in navigating through this process. Remember to have your case paperwork with you that specifies which device you need to use. We will also want to know if you have already reached out to your State Authority about switching devices.
Need an Interlock Device? We can assist you by scheduling your appointment and providing a quote. Call Smart Start at 800-831-3299 or fill out our quick and simple online form.

SERIES: What Does ‘Blow Longer’ on My Interlock Device Mean?
In this blog series, we will go over the different screen readings your Interlock Device may produce during your program. Keep checking back as we go through and explain each reading to make your life just a little bit easier while you are a client at Smart Start.
Our first blog in the series clarifies one of the abort messages clients may receive on their Interlocks: BLOW LONGER.
Abort Messages?
Abort messages mean you did not successfully complete your breath test on your Interlock. However, they do guide you in taking your next test by providing specific messages, such as Blow Longer or Blow Softer, so you know how to fix your breath test pattern. Keep in mind that abort messages are not fails!
Let’s go over how to avoid BLOW LONGER messages on your Interlock Device.
What Does ‘Blow Longer’ Mean, and How Do I Fix My Breath Pattern?
If your Interlock reads BLOW LONGER, this means your air pressure was not sufficient, or you did not blow long enough into the mouthpiece.
Once your Interlock resets with the word BLOW, you can attempt the test again. Take a deep breath before starting your test. When you take your test, maintain a steady airflow, or increase your airflow pressure. After successfully completing your test, you’ll be back on the road in no time.
If your Interlock Device is still showing the BLOW LONGER message after several attempts, do not worry. Please call our 24/7/365 customer care center at 800-831-3299 for assistance. We will help you anytime and any day, including weekends and holidays.
Do you need to install an Interlock Device? A customer care representative will find your nearest Smart Start service center, create an appointment and provide you a quote. Call us today 800-831-3299 or fill out our fast and easy online form.

Need more details on Smart Start’s camera? Our blog explains why having a camera during your Ignition Interlock program can be beneficial to you.

Please call our 24/7/365 Customer Care Center at(800) 831-3299 or fill out our quick and simple online form. We’ll set up an IID installation appointment at a Smart Start service center that’s convenient for you.

Do I have to use this camera with my Ignition Interlock?
Not all Ignition Interlock requirements include a camera. But when it does, this add-on accessory can be more beneficial than you may initially think.

Need to know what other abort messages on your Ignition Interlock mean?
Don’t Inhale
