Can I get an Ignition Interlock if I’m not a U.S. Citizen?
If you are working toward becoming a U.S. citizen, are you still required to use an Ignition Interlock?
Do I need an Ignition Interlock if I’m not a U.S. Citizen?
Keeping our roadways safe involves everyone who lives in America. If a state issues you a license to allow you to drive, then you are subject to the U.S. laws surrounding the use of that license. Anyone residing in the U.S. must install an Ignition Interlock if they are required to do so.
An Ignition Interlock may be required per a state jurisdiction or court order resulting from a DUI arrest. Courts can still order an Ignition Interlock as a condition of bond or probation.
Ignition Interlocks as an Option for Utmost Safety
Individuals who are not U.S. citizens can even sign up for an Ignition Interlock on a voluntary basis. Some immigrant attorneys will recommend this option to their clients.
Keep in mind! Every jurisdiction, county and/or state has different regulations for DUI cases. You should consult with an attorney regarding your residency status, and the issues you may face due to U.S., state and local requirements. You should also consult with an attorney any time you are arrested for a DUI.
Do you need an Ignition Interlock as part of your court requirement? If you’d like any assistance or need a question answered during your Interlock program, Smart Start is always standing by to help. Our Customer Care team is bilingual in Spanish and English, knowledgeable and friendly. They’re also available 24/7/365, even during weekends and holidays.
We’ll provide you a quote, offer any specials that may be available in your state and schedule your appointment at your nearest Smart Start service center.

Why do I have to lease an Ignition Interlock?
The lease of an Ignition Interlock is your best choice when you are court or state-required to install one. Buying an Interlock may seem easier, but in reality, it could incur more costly issues against you.
For example, you could face more costs if the Interlock gets damaged or stolen outside of a warranty. The lease option also protects you if the Device malfunctions.
You do, however, have the choice in picking the right Ignition Interlock provider for you.
Choose a Certified Ignition Interlock Provider
You’ll want to make sure that the provider you choose is certified in the state where you will use your Interlock. The right Ignition Interlock provider will lease their product to you. This means you won’t have to worry about long-term contracts.
Smart Start, for example, is a nationwide leader that operates in 46 states. When your vendor is fully compliant with the states they operate in, you will have a smooth-sailing Interlock program. In fact, you could receive more consequences from your court or state office if you are using a non-compliant Ignition Interlock.
Voluntary Ignition Interlocks
If you are looking for an Ignition Interlock to use of your own accord, buying one is an option. However, you still do not really know the accuracy of the Interlock or the type of customer service you’ll receive with vendors who are not state-certified. Be careful and conduct the proper research – leasing an Ignition Interlock by a state-approved vendor is still in your best interest.

Smart Start’s Training Video – SmartMobile (ENGLISH)
Video Script Below:
Hello, and welcome to Smart Start. We understand that you have been ordered to use a portable alcohol monitoring device. With your SmartMobile™, we will help you get through your program successfully. In this training video, we will show you the SmartMobile device, how it works, testing windows, and more so you are prepared to use your SmartMobile. If you need to review a certain section of the video, please return to the Main Menu and select the section you wish to see again. You can also review this video again at SMARTSTARTINC.COM.
Parts of the SmartMobile
Your SmartMobile comes in a protective carrying case with two mouthpieces, a charger, and a charging cord, plus a user manual and quick reference guide. If needed, your service location or your State Authority can provide you with more mouthpieces.
Charging your SmartMobile is easy and convenient. As a battery-powered product, Smart Start recommends plugging in and charging your device during the night. The device can run up to five days on a full battery. When sufficiently charged, the device will wake up during a test window. The battery icon at the top of your SmartMobile’s screen will show you how much battery power is available. You also can check the battery level and your next scheduled service appointment under the menu options. It is your responsibility to ensure your SmartMobile maintains a sufficient charge to provide all your required tests and ensure its proper functionality.
How do I take a test with my SmartMobile?
Let’s explain the device you will be using. The SmartMobile is a portable device that measures the BrAC level, or breath alcohol concentration, in your system. Your device requires you to take a breath test during scheduled, or random, test windows. The SmartMobile can also identify you by taking your picture and noting your location at the time of a passed, failed or skipped test.
Taking a test is easy. Remove the mouthpiece from the protective packaging and insert into your SmartMobile. The mouthpiece must be inserted as shown, or it will not operate properly. Keep the device away from liquids. It is very important that you rinse your mouth with water before taking any breath test to eliminate contaminants.
During a test window, your device will beep, notifying you of a test, and will display a countdown of the time remaining to take your test. If the test window is about to expire, the beeping will increase in frequency and volume.
Hold your SmartMobile as shown, and look into the camera at the top of the display. The camera will detect your face during the test and should not be blocked. Your lips should be fully sealed around the entire end of the mouthpiece. Take a deep breath and blow steadily into the device for three to four seconds until you hear a click. Remember to inhale away from the device, then exhale into the mouthpiece. Your device will either show a PASS or VIOLATION after taking a test. With a failed test, you will be required to take two re-tests. Your State Authority may require additional re-tests. It is a violation to not take all required re-tests.
Your SmartMobile will upload all test results after each test window closes and the display will show ‘DATA UPLOAD.’
Your State Authority will only be notified when a failed breath test or skipped test occurs. While your device is in ‘Data Upload,’ you are not allowed to provide a breath sample. The data upload takes just a few minutes, and once completed, the device will display ‘READY’ again with your next scheduled test window underneath. For a successful data upload, please ensure your device is in an area with good cellular connectivity. You can provide a breath test any time the device is in a ‘READY’ mode.
Test windows
Your State Authority will require test windows for you that can be scheduled, random, or on-demand. For scheduled tests, the SmartMobile will display your upcoming test date and time on the ‘READY’ screen. For random tests, the screen will display ‘NEXT TEST RANDOM.’ You will not know when the test will occur, so it is important that you always keep your SmartMobile with you. For scheduled and random test windows, your device will wake up and beep when you need to take a test. You may also be required to take on-demand tests. Your State Authority requires you to take an on-demand test immediately once they contact you. If your SmartMobile is in power-saving mode, you can wake it up again by pressing the STAR, ZERO or POUND key on the keypad and take a test to show you are alcohol-free.
SmartMobile display messages
Your SmartMobile displays PASS or VIOLATION from a completed breath test.
A VIOLATION occurs when your SmartMobile detects any type of alcohol at or above the fail level set by your State Authority. The device will automatically display ‘VIOLATION,’ and require you to take re-tests. Skipped tests are also considered a VIOLATION. You can find your message definitions in the quick reference guide. Tampering with your SmartMobile will be considered a violation of your program.
Your SmartMobile’s camera technology will identify your face when taking a test. Make sure you are in a well-lit area that illuminates your face clearly. Make sure you are properly clothed for a photo when taking your test. If the SmartMobile does not detect your face, the test will not be completed, and the screen will display ‘FACE NOT DETECTED.’ You will be required to take another test. Hold the device as shown to pass a test. Holding your device in any other position may cause a failed test because your face is not in full view. Be aware of major light sources directly behind you, like the sun or fluorescent lighting, that could be drowning out your face to the SmartMobile camera.
Your SmartMobile will not allow a test on the device if the temperature of the device is too cold or too hot. The internal heaters do not run off the battery, but will require you to plug in the device to a power source, especially when the device reads ‘TOO COLD.’ Keep your device within normal room temperature conditions.
If an incomplete test sample is provided, your SmartMobile will display messages to assist you with the re-test attempts.
If your device reads ‘Test Incomplete – Blow Harder,’ this means that you need to blow longer and with more pressure. ‘Test Incomplete – Blow Softer,’ means you blew too hard. ‘Test Incomplete – Don’t Inhale,’ means your device detected inhaling during the test. Remember to only exhale into the mouthpiece. ‘Test Error – Tamper Detect’ indicates your device detected a breath sample that did not meet SmartMobile testing requirements. Make sure you are not blocking the vent on the bottom of the device while testing.
Your user manual has a complete list of all messages you may encounter when using your SmartMobile device. The quick reference guide is also provided to give you basic use guidelines and display message descriptions. If you require additional assistance related to product use, do not hesitate to call Smart Start any time at 1-800-880-3394 to speak with a customer care specialist. For information regarding your program, please contact your State Authority. If you need to review a certain section of the video, please return to the Main Menu and select the section you wish to review. You can also view this video again at smartstartinc.comunder the Customer Support tab.
Thank you for watching, and letting Smart Start partner with you on the success of your program.

Can I take a class to avoid an Ignition Interlock?
The order to have an Ignition Interlock in your vehicle usually happens through your court and/or DMV office.
Many states also have some requirements for you to complete in addition to having an Ignition Interlock. One of them is attending an alcohol education or treatment class.
Can I avoid an Ignition Interlock with these alcohol education classes?
These classes are not meant as an option for you to avoid the Ignition Interlock. They are combined with the Ignition Interlock to help you succeed, get back to a normal life and drive safely.
What will these classes do for me?
Each state has different regulations regarding if you need to attend and complete an alcohol education class. However, in some cases, these classes are offered to you as an option in addition to your court or state requirements. The classes’ length varies, but can be anywhere from six weeks to nine months or longer. Sometimes, the length of your class will depend on your conviction details. For example, if you are under 21-years-old, your class may last longer.
If you want to know more information on your class, ask your State Authority with your court and/or DMV/DPS.
What if the Ignition Interlock is a choice?
During your court hearing, an Ignition Interlock is either mandatory, or you can make the choice between an Interlock or a suspended license. However, you may want to consider the option of an Ignition Interlock carefully. If you opt for a suspended license instead of an Ignition Interlock, you will not be allowed to drive for a long time.
When you are given the choice to use an Ignition Interlock, think about the value in keeping your license.
Ignition Interlocks allow you to continue with your everyday routine by being able to drive. Getting to work, school, or picking up your children won’t be a hassle when you have an Ignition Interlock installed in your vehicle.
If you are caught driving with a suspended license, you’ll receive more severe consequences!
To learn more about what your state requires if convicted of a DUI/DWI, visit our website for the information you need.

Can I Buy an Ignition Interlock Instead of Leasing One?
When you are required to use it, you will usually not buy an Ignition Interlock, but lease one from a certified vendor.
Smart Start only leases our Ignition Interlocks, and there’s some good reasons why.
Buying an Ignition Interlock
If you buy an Ignition Interlock online, you do not really know if the vendor is certified or not. A non-certified Interlock means you may violate your program requirements. This will cause even more consequences for you with your court and/or your DMV/DPS office!
The Benefits of a Leased Ignition Interlock
No Long-Term Contracts
You never need to worry about any long-term contracts with a leased Smart Start Interlock. Your fees are only month-by-month.
Regular Service
Sold Ignition Interlocks do not receive the benefit of leased ones when it comes to regular maintenance. During a required Interlock program, clients visit a Smart Start service center every 30 or 60 days. The schedule for your appointment depends on the state you live in.
This appointment, usually called a calibration service, allows your Interlock to export all its data. More importantly, our licensed and qualified technicians ‘refresh’ the Device to ensure it still works properly. In other words, Smart Start can make sure your Interlock stays updated and is in great working order for you.

Series: BLOW SOFTER on the Ignition Interlock
You may receive abort messages during your Ignition Interlock program. Abort messages mean that you did not blow into your Interlock properly, but this result does not read as a fail.
Do not worry if you receive an abort message. If you follow your Ignition Interlock screen’s prompts, you’ll be back on the road in no time.
What does ‘Blow Softer’ mean?
You may already know what you need to do when you see this message. Blow Softer means that the Ignition Interlock is receiving too much air pressure. It cannot establish an accurate reading of your breath alcohol concentration, or BrAC.
How Do I Fix My Breath Test When My Ignition Interlock Reads ‘Blow Softer’?
Without breaking your humming pattern (if this is applicable in your state), make sure you decrease your airflow. If you use a straight blow pattern, blow more gently into the mouthpiece. Your Ignition Interlock will not require you to be out of breath after each test.
Try blowing into your Ignition Interlock again with less airflow once the Interlock reads ‘Blow.’
Need to Know What Other Abort Messages on Your Ignition Interlock Mean?
Need to know what to do for other abort test messages? Read BLOW LONGER here. We’ll be adding to our series regularly, so keep checking back on the blog for more Ignition Interlock reading definitions.

Can I Hide or Disguise My Ignition Interlock?
Although an Ignition Interlock will help someone get back on the road, the thought of having one is still a little worrisome.
During your research for a reputable Ignition Interlock vendor, you may have come across companies that ‘disguise’ Interlocks. In other words, they sell a product that looks like a big soda can or water bottle to hide the Interlock in.
This may sound OK, even tempting, but we recommend being cautious if you are thinking of purchasing one of these disguises. Some states prohibit the use of ‘hidden’ Ignition Interlocks. These products could cause more severe consequences for you. Make sure you ask the person who is monitoring your Interlock program for more information.
Make this period of your life a smooth process. You don’t need to worry about facing more penalties with Smart Start’s products.
Our high-quality SSI-20/20™ and SSI-20/30™ Ignition Interlocks are built to look discreet. They can even fit comfortably in the palm of your hand with its Smartphone-like size.

Can I Receive Financial Assistance During My Ignition Interlock Program?
Do you need to use an Ignition Interlock in your vehicle, but you’re worried about the costs involved?
Ignition Interlocks are inexpensive. In fact, an Interlock doesn’t cost more than a Starbucks coffee or a pack of cigarettes per day. However, we do understand that some of our clients may need a little more financial assistance.
Receive Financial Assistance with Smart Start
If you are wondering if you can receive financial assistance with an Ignition Interlock in your area, feel free to ask Smart Start’s Customer Care Center team. Available 24/7/365, even during weekends and holidays, we will go above and beyond to assist you.
If we cannot provide an answer to you, your State Authority, or whomever ordered you on the Ignition Interlock, will know how to help. When you visit a Smart Start service center, our technicians can also let you know how to qualify for the indigent program in your state.
Additional Tips
For example, to receive financial assistance, some states will require you to ask your court, or to fill out certain paperwork, such as Washington. Unfortunately, other states do not allow indigent programs.
At Smart Start, we understand that our clients come to us at what could be a stressful time. We strive to ensure convenience and affordability with the fairest pricing nationwide. We also try to offer a special or discounts. Specials vary or are not available in every state. When you call, just ask our Customer Care representative about any specials happening in your state!

What is a PBT (Personal Breath Test), and how does it differ from an Ignition Interlock?
There are several types of alcohol testing techniques that can show your breath alcohol concentration, or BrAC. A couple of tactics that may be more common to the general public are blood or urine testing.
A couple of devices that may not come to mind are personal breath testers (PBT) and Ignition Interlocks. These products are less invasive than blood and urine tests, and have highly accurate test results.
So, what’s the difference between a PBT and an Ignition Interlock?
PBT’s are usually used by law enforcement to test a driver’s breath alcohol when they are pulled over. Anyone can purchase a PBT, however, to maintain sobriety. They are small, portable and can have the same testing technology as an Interlock Device.
Interlocks are usually a state or court requirement following a DWI or DUI offense. They must be installed in the individual’s vehicle, and are a physical deterrent to drinking and driving. If someone’s breath alcohol is at or above the Interlock’s fail level, they will not be able to start their vehicle.
PBT’s are voluntary devices, but Interlocks can be, too.
A PBT cannot physically stop a drunk driver from getting behind the wheel. The only way to know for sure a loved one is not drinking and driving is with an Ignition Interlock installed in their vehicle.
Accurate Alcohol Testing Technology
PBT’s and Interlocks are very accurate and effective in determining someone’s breath alcohol concentration (BrAC). If the product has fuel cell technology, that means it has the most advanced form of breath alcohol testing worldwide.
Smart Start’s Interlock Devices have fuel cell technology, which means the most reliability during your Interlock program.
Do you need an Interlock Device? Smart Start’s provides the best in customer service and an easy-to-use, efficient Ignition Interlock. Our Customer Care Center can provide you a quote and set up an installation appointment at your nearest Smart Start service center.

Can I put an Ignition Interlock on a tractor or other heavy machinery?
We’ve covered whether Ignition Interlocks can be installed on motorcycles or boats, or not. The answer is that Ignition Interlocks can be on anything with a constant power supply and starter.
But there are other types of transportation that are classified as a motor vehicle – and they are not your typical car or SUV. Take tractors for example, or other heavy machinery such as forklifts.
So, can tractors have Ignition Interlocks installed on them?
It’s definitely possible for an Ignition Interlock to be installed on a tractor!
Can I get a DUI when I’m operating a tractor?
It goes without saying, but if you are driving impaired on a tractor, you could face a DUI.
In fact, multiple news articles have covered people receiving DUI’s/DWI’s in some states because they were operating a tractor impaired on the road. If you drink and drive on your tractor on your own land, like a farm, you are still susceptible to receiving a DUI. Other states, however, like Oklahoma, will not charge someone with a DUI if they are operating a tractor while drunk.
Be cautious if you just received a DUI and you need to operate a forklift at your job.
If you do need to operate heavy machinery at your work, like a forklift, you may want to ask your court whether you can use one or not. Forklifts can be considered motor vehicles, and you do not want to face more consequences with your court.
Make sure you are 100 percent sober before driving anything, whether it is a tractor or a vehicle.

You can also view this video again at smartstartinc.com under the Customer Support tab.

Don’t Inhale
Blow Longer

Do you need to use an Ignition Interlock in your vehicle, but you’re worried about the costs involved?

Do you need an Ignition Interlock for your vehicle? Our Customer Care Center can provide you a quote and set up an installation appointment at your nearest Smart Start location. Call us at 800-831-3299 or fill out our quick and simple online form.
