Massachusetts Ignition Interlock Laws

For first-time offenders and repeat offenders operating under the influence (OUI), your license will be confiscated immediately per the Administrative License Revocation (ALR) if:

  • Your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level was .08 or higher
  • You refused a breath test

Massachusetts requires Ignition Interlock Devices (IID) for second-time OUI offenders. You’re required to pay for all costs associated with the IID, from installation, monthly lease payments, and service fees to removal. You may also be required to complete an alcohol education program.

How to Get Your License Quickly in Massachusetts

  1. Contact the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) for a hearing to learn what you need for a hardship license or a complete reinstatement.
  2. Schedule an appointment, upon hardship or reinstatement approval, to have your ignition interlock installed with an approved Smart Start interlock service provider by calling 800.831.3299.
  3. Ask someone to drive you to your installation appointment. Remember to bring proof of ID.
  4. Take your affidavits and installation documents to the RMV so a Hearings Officer can update your license to include a “Z” restriction.
  5. Complete any pending court regulations.

DISCLAIMER: These steps may not be a complete representation of what you must do to regain your license. As OUI case details vary by each individual, please do not see this step-by-step guide as an official process to regaining your license, but rather as a starting point only.
