Do you need to use an Ignition Interlock because of a DWI? It can seem overwhelming right now on top of your other DWI requirements, but with Smart Start, your Ignition Interlock doesn’t have to be a stressful process. We’ll walk you through what an Ignition Interlock is and what you can expect out of your Smart Start Texas Ignition Interlock program.
What is an Ignition Interlock Exactly?
First, let’s briefly go over what an Ignition Interlock is. The Ignition Interlock is a handheld car breathalyzer that analyzes your breath alcohol concentration or BrAC, which is like your BAC level, before starting your vehicle. In Texas, your Smart Start Ignition Interlock breath test is a blow-hum pattern, which means blowing into the device while humming at the same time. You will also be providing tests throughout your drive to continue proving that you are not drinking and driving. We’ll go over these types of tests in the Random Running Retests section.
Now that you know a bit more about your Ignition Interlock, let’s walk through the Texas Ignition Interlock program and what you can expect throughout your time with your device.
The Ignition Interlock Installation Appointment
You are told by your court or legal representative that you need to install an Ignition Interlock. Once this happens, all you need to do is research and decide on which Ignition Interlock provider. If you choose Smart Start, just call our Customer Care Center at (800) 831-3299. All our service centers are DPS-certified, which means we are approved by the state of Texas to install and provide all Ignition Interlock services such as transfers and removals.
Once you call (800) 831-3299 to schedule a Smart Start Interlock installation appointment, you’ll be closer to driving again! Make sure to bring the following items with you to your appointment.
- Two forms of photo ID (examples: state-issued ID, passport, credit card, etc.)
- Any court paperwork provided to you
- Proof of residence (you can use your car insurance form/paperwork IF your address listed is current and correct!)
- Car insurance and vehicle registration documents
- Payment for your installation and first month’s lease
* Need to use someone else’s vehicle? You will need to have a letter of permission notarized by the owner stating you can install an Ignition Interlock in their vehicle.
During your installation appointment, our friendly technician will help train you with your Ignition Interlock so you know how to properly take a test. If you need to re-visit your training materials, you can watch our training videos or read our manuals (English and Spanish).
Now let’s look at what random running retests are, which are the tests you need to take during your drive.

Random Running Retests
Once you pass your initial breath test, you will be able to start your vehicle. During your drive, you’ll be prompted from your Ignition Interlock to provide a breath sample. These tests are called random running retests. You may have also heard the term “random rolling retests.” For all random running retests, Smart Start advises pulling over safely first! In Texas, you will have up to six minutes to provide a test. Keep in mind that state-approved Ignition Interlocks will never stop your vehicle while it is in motion, even if a running retest is failed or skipped!
During your program, you’ll be visiting your service center on a frequent basis. Let’s go over your service appointments, which you must schedule and go to until the end of your Texas Ignition Interlock program.
Calibration Appointments
In Texas, you will need to visit your Ignition Interlock service center every 30 days, or whenever your court requires these services. It could be weekly, bi-monthly, etc. These calibration appointments only last a few minutes but are important! They allow our technicians to check your device to make sure everything is running smoothly, and to refresh the Ignition Interlock for your next month of use. If you have any questions, our technicians can also assist you at this time.
Unlock Codes
There may come a point during your Ignition Interlock program where you’ll need a Unlock Code. Unlock Codes allow you to unlock your device from Lockout Mode and are a more convenient alternative rather than towing your vehicle and paying the fees. In Texas, you are given one Unlock Code between calibration appointments. The code is free of charge and will last up to six hours for you to visit our service center to get your device checked out.
Removing Your Ignition Interlock
If you are nearing the end of your Smart Start Texas Ignition Interlock requirement period, then congratulations! Make sure to follow these steps to make sure you are authorized to remove your Ignition Interlock.
- Your court contact can submit the authorization court order paperwork to remove your Ignition Interlock to removals@smartstartinc.com or fax to 972-929-6638.
- Make sure to include your full name and date of birth when sending your removal authorization paperwork.
- Please allow one business day for our team to process your documents!
- A Customer Care Center agent will notify you of your removal eligibility date and your next steps.
Once these steps are complete, we will schedule a removal appointment at your Smart Start service center.

What Can I Expect from a First DWI or DUI in Maryland?
Do you know what to do after a first DWI/DUI in Maryland? The state does require Ignition Interlock Devices for many first DWI/DUI cases, so if you do need to install one, Smart Start will get you back on the road quick! We offer our clients reliable service and fair prices during their program. In any case, let’s go over what else you can expect from a first DWI or DUI in Maryland so you’ll know what to do next.
A First DUI/DWI in Maryland Timeline
First, you should know that a first DWI/DUI in Maryland involves administrative and court-related penalties. When your license is suspended or revoked, the Maryland MVA or Motor Vehicle Administration is your administrative authority that is involved with reinstating your license.
Now that you know your DUI case has both an administrative and court aspect to it, let’s get into what may have occurred after your arrest. When you were arrested, the officer likely confiscated your actual driver’s license and provided you with a temporary license. He or she will also provide you an Advice of Rights form and an Order of Suspension form that details the charges against you and how to participate in the Ignition Interlock program so you can drive again.
A First DWI/DUI Conviction in Maryland
You will also have a court hearing about your DWI/DUI case. Here are the penalties you may face because of a first DWI/DUI conviction.
These penalties can differ if you were transporting a minor at the time, you’re a commercial driver, you are a minor (under 21-years-old), or you had aggravating circumstances with your DWI/DUI. A test refusal with a first DWI/DUI offense involves a 270-day (or approximate 9-month) license suspension.
Typical first DWI/DUI cases in Maryland need the Ignition Interlock for six months. If you refused to submit to a chemical test, the Interlock Device period will be one year.
In addition, your DWI/DUI lawyer could also advise you to take other steps, such as alcohol treatment programs or attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. They will also recommend when to install your Ignition Interlock Device.
Installing the Ignition Interlock Device and Receiving Your Interlock Restricted License
If you have one, your DUI lawyer or attorney can advise you when to install your Ignition Interlock Device. You also have this information on your Order of Suspension form. When you get the Ignition Interlock installed at a Smart Start service center, you’ll receive a certificate of installation form. Take this form and your temporary license to a full-service Maryland MVA location to receive your Interlock Restricted License, which will be your new license until your original one is reinstated.
Next, within a week, the MVA will send you a welcome packet with program guidelines. As part of the program requirements, you’ll need to attend driver improvement classes. The packet will list how you enroll in these classes.
From here, it’s only a matter of time and complying with your requirements to put this all behind you. If you have any Ignition Interlock questions, you can always call our friendly Customer Care Center at (800) 831-3299. We know the Maryland DWI or DUI law and can get you back on the road fast.

Everything You Need to Know About the New ARD Interlock Program in Pennsylvania
There’s a new Ignition Interlock regulation for Pennsylvania drivers with a DUI. The Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition or ARD program has started giving participants an option to install an Ignition Interlock during their suspension period.
What is the New ARD Interlock Program in Pennsylvania?
Here’s how it works. The ARD Interlock program is unique to Pennsylvania. It is available for certain first-time DUI cases, namely ones with no prior convictions or ARDs.
Previously, individuals in the ARD program could not install an Interlock for their ARD-related suspension. Now, if drivers are under a license suspension for 30, 60 or 90 days, and they enter the ARD program on or after October 20, they have the option to install an Ignition Interlock during their suspension period. The Interlock will be available right when they receive their suspension notice with details on next steps. ARD participants will petition PennDOT for the Ignition Interlock Limited License or IILL, which we will go over later in the blog.
Switching from Court to PennDOT for Driver’s License
There’s another new piece to this regulation that affects all drivers with a DUI conviction and ARD participants. Previously, drivers surrendered their license in court. As of October 20, 2018, drivers will no longer surrender their driver’s license in court. Upon conviction of a DUI or upon entering the ARD program, the courts will notify PennDOT. PennDOT will then mail out the “Notification of Suspension” letter, which will give instructions on how to surrender the license and the date that your license suspension begins.
Let’s get into how you need to install your Interlock Device if you are in the ARD program.
Installing an Ignition Interlock for the ARD Program
In Pennsylvania, you must petition to PennDOT for an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) Limited License if you are going to drive with an Interlock. You need to fill out form DL-9108 and send to PennDOT so you can receive the proper license. This process is the same for non-ARD, Interlock required individuals. Remember that you need to install your Interlock BEFORE applying for the IILL!
When you receive your suspension letter, you can call Smart Start, or a state-approved provider, and set up an Ignition Interlock installation appointment. You want to make sure that you get your Interlock Device installed accordingly to your suspension date.
Removing the Ignition Interlock for ARD Program Participants
Keep in mind that to get your unrestricted license back, you must be violation-free during the last 30 days of your IILL period. PennDOT will send you the removal notification letter with the date you can go in for your final Interlock service. If no violations occur in the last 30 days, Smart Start will send the necessary paperwork on your behalf to PennDOT. You can call PennDOT to verify that you have satisfied all requirements to get your unrestricted license issued, then proceed to your local Driver License Compact (DLC) office with your camera card and have the unrestricted license issued. Once you have the unrestricted license, you can make a removal appointment with Smart Start.
If you have any questions, you can refer to PennDOT’s IID Limited License Eligibility Fact Sheet, or call Smart Start at (800) 831-3299 for more information. Our team knows the new Pennsylvania DUI law and can get you back on the road the fastest!

What Happens After a First OWI in Iowa?
Do you know what to expect after a first OWI in Iowa? An OWI means Operating While Intoxicated and has a similar meaning to a DUI or DWI. If you do need to install an Ignition Interlock because of your OWI, Smart Start can help with many service locations and reasonable pricing! In any case, let’s go over a typical timeline for first OWI cases in Iowa so you have a better understanding of what to do next.
A First OWI in Iowa Timeline
First, after your OWI arrest, the officer will inform you about a temporary restricted driver’s license that you can apply for from the Iowa Department of Transportation or DOT. This is important to know because for most OWI arrests, your driver’s license will be suspended, and you won’t be able to drive.
You may want to hire a legal representative like an OWI attorney at this time! They can assist you with the best next steps for you during your OWI case.
Your license suspension lasts 180 days (or approximately six months) if you did take the breath test. If you refused your tests, the penalties increase. Your license suspension period will last one year. However, if you did consent to the portable breath test at your time of arrest, you will have a 10-day driving permit that allows you to drive unrestricted. After 30 days, you may apply for the temporary restricted license. This means you cannot drive between days 11 through 30!
Applying for the Temporary Restricted License/Permit
Now let’s get into how you can obtain your temporary restricted license. You must install an Ignition Interlock Device in your vehicle if you pled guilty to your OWI case. An Ignition Interlock Device allows you to drive again and get back to your everyday routine. You will also need to obtain an SR-22, or proof of financial responsibility, when applying for a temporary restricted license.
The temporary restricted license allows you to travel to the following locations:
First OWI in Iowa Court Conviction
Your court hearing may be around the same time you are applying for your temporary restricted license. In most first OWI Iowa cases, your conviction will usually consist of the following:
Another possible outcome is falling under deferred judgment in your court conviction. This means that the court will not impose the sentence mandated by Iowa law, such as jail sentencing or imposing fines. Instead, deferred judgment penalties usually mean probation for a certain period. If you complete all the terms of your probation and you follow with what the judge orders, your OWI conviction record is erased. An Interlock Device could be one of these probation terms so you can drive again.
Have any questions about your Interlock Device program? Smart Start can help as the worldwide leader of Ignition Interlocks! Our team is standing by at all hours to assist you at (800) 831-3299. We can also quickly schedule an installation appointment for you during normal business hours if you need an Interlock Device soon.

When Will I Need an Ignition Interlock in Alaska?
Do you know if you’ll need an Ignition Interlock in Alaska? Let’s go over when an Ignition Interlock may be a requirement and how long you’ll need the device.
Ignition Interlock Law in Alaska
Most DUI convictions and/or test refusals mean you must have an Ignition Interlock in Alaska. Whether it’s a first or subsequent DUI, you’ll want to prepare to install an Interlock Device as a requirement to reinstate your driving privileges. If you do need an Ignition Interlock, the DMV will place a “C” restriction on your driver’s license, which means an Ignition Interlock Device is required. Or on a limited driver’s license, “Ignition Interlock Device Required,” will be printed on the paper license.
How long you’ll need the Interlock Device is at the court’s discretion. In typical cases, the requirement period could range between six months to a year, but could also be longer. Keep in mind that you cannot wait out your Ignition Interlock requirement period!
How to Apply for an Ignition Interlock Device or IID Limited License
You may have the option to apply for an IID Limited License. This license is only available and can be issued after the first 30 days for a first misdemeanor DUI conviction or administrative per se offense. It is also available for second or subsequent misdemeanor DUI convictions or administrative per se offenses after the first 90 days. Limited licenses are not available if you refused your breath test.
To apply, you need to fill out the Limited License Application, or Form 404c. Alaska has an Alcohol Safety Action Program or ASAP that you may need to complete as well, along with any other requirements, to be eligible for an IID Limited License.
How Long Will I Need an Ignition Interlock?
Below shows how long you’ll need an Ignition Interlock based on your DUI circumstances.
Have any questions about the Alaska Ignition Interlock program? Feel free to call Smart Start at (800) 831-3299.

A First OWI in Indiana Timeline
First, if you were arrested for an OWI or Operating While Intoxicated charge, your vehicle was likely impounded, and the arresting officer placed you in jail. You should know that your initial court hearing will occur within 10 days from your arrest date. This is important because you can hire a legal representative such as an OWI lawyer or attorney during this time to assist you.
There are several options laid out for you at this time. Below are just a few.
The BMV and Installing an Ignition Interlock Device (if Required)
Based on the outcome of your initial hearing, the BMV may have received a court order recommending that you install an Ignition Interlock. If this is the case, the BMV will immediately send you a letter stating that you may only operate a vehicle with an Ignition Interlock. The letter will specify when you need to install the Interlock Device. If you do need to install an Interlock Device, Smart Start has the most convenient locations in Indiana for a quick installation!
Now let’s go over how long your driver’s license may be suspended for in Indiana from a first OWI.

When Will I Need an Ignition Interlock Device in Massachusetts?
Do you know if you’ll need an Ignition Interlock Device in Massachusetts after an OUI? An Ignition Interlock Device or IID may be a requirement if you have repeat OUI charges. Let’s go over in more detail when an IID is required and how long you’ll need the device to reinstate your driving privileges.
Ignition Interlock Device Law in Massachusetts
First, you should know at what point you’ll need to install an Interlock Device. Under Melanie’s Law, an IID is a requirement for drivers under two situations. Either it’s a requirement with a conditional hardship license or for those whose driver’s licenses are eligible for reinstatement following completion of their OUI license suspension or revocation periods.
The conditional hardship license restricts your driving privileges. It allows you to drive for a set, 12-hour period by the RMV, or the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.
Now let’s specify how you obtain an IID, because you must have the RMV’s approval before installing one!
The Process of Getting an IID in Massachusetts
1. You’ll need to visit an RMV service center and speak with an RMV hearings officer. They will explain the IID program to you whether for a conditional hardship license or for full reinstatement.
2. At the RMV, you’ll receive and need to sign legal documents related to your IID. The hearings officer will also show you a list of state-approved Ignition Interlock providers such as Smart Start. It’s important to do some research on each provider to find the right one for you! Smart Start provides many convenient locations, affordable pricing, a friendly service team and no hidden fees.
3. Once this paperwork is complete and returned to the officer, an “HZ” (conditional license) or a “Z” (license suspension/revocation) license restriction will be added to your driver’s license. They also be referred to as “HT” and “T” licenses.
4. Now you will need to schedule an IID installation appointment. Make sure you do NOT DRIVE to the Ignition Interlock service center! Remember that your license restriction means that you can only drive a vehicle with an IID installed. Ask someone to drive you to the shop for your installation service.
You can also read through this process of obtaining an IID through the RMV’s website.
How Long Will I Need an IID in Massachusetts?
In Massachusetts, the minimum IID restriction period lasts two years. However, for those issued a conditional hardship license, the IID is a requirement for the length of your suspension/revocation period plus two years after reinstatement of your full driving privileges.
If you have any questions about your IID program, Smart Start can help! Our friendly customer service team is standing by to assist you at 781-871-7677.

What to Expect After a First OVUII in Hawaii
Do you know what to expect after a first DUI or OVUII in Hawaii? It can get confusing and overwhelming fast, but just take a deep breath! With your legal representatives, the Administrative Driver’s License Revocation Office (ADLRO) and Smart Start, your Ignition Interlock provider, you’ll be back on the road before you know it.
With an OVUII, you could be subject to both criminal and administrative penalties. The administrative factor is all about your driver’s license and is separate from your court-related orders. Now that you know there are two components to your OVUII in Hawaii, let’s go over a typical timeline of a first OVUII to decide what you need to do next.
A First OVUII Timeline: Arrest and Hiring an Attorney
The first thing that happens with an OVUII is the arrest when an officer pulls you over on suspicion of OVUII or Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant. Your driver’s license was probably revoked, and you were issued a temporary permit that allows you to drive for 30 days from your arrest date. Once you are released, you may want to hire legal representation at this time so they can advise you on what to do next to help with your case, because you’ll have a couple of timely options laid out before you regarding your license.
Scheduling an Administrative Hearing
Let’s go over your first option. Within three calendar days from your arrest date, you have the choice to contest your driver’s license revocation with the ADLRO or the Administrative Driver’s License Revocation Office. To do this, you’ll need to fill out the Request to Reconsider Administrative Revocation of License form.
You can send the form in whichever way you prefer:
The ADLRO generally has eight calendar days to process and come to a decision on alcohol-related offenses. This decision will determine whether your driver’s license will remain revoked or not and for how long. Once the ADLRO has made their decision and you are notified, you’ll have six calendar days to schedule the hearing within your temporary permit driving period.
Your other option is to not do anything at all. If you don’t contest your driver’s license or you fail to schedule a hearing, your license revocation will be sustained. You will receive a letter from the ADLRO confirming the revocation and the length of the revocation period.
In any case, if you qualify for one, you’ll need to apply for an Ignition Interlock Permit (IIP) to drive again during your revocation period. You do not have to request a hearing to apply for an IIP. Let’s discuss the IIP and how to obtain one.
Obtaining an Ignition Interlock Permit
During your license revocation period, you’ll have the option to operate a vehicle with a Smart Start Ignition Interlock Device. First, however, you’ll need an IIP from the ADLRO after you install your device.
Sign the application for an Ignition Interlock Permit and send it to:
Administrative Driver’s License Revocation Office (ADLRO)
American Savings Bank Tower
1001 Bishop Street, Suite 500
Honolulu, Hawaii 96813
You also need to send a copy of your Smart Start Ignition Interlock lease agreement (as proof of your device installation) and proof of valid motor vehicle insurance, or self-insurance for any vehicle in which an Ignition Interlock has been installed.
The IIP is not available for individuals who had a suspended/revoked/invalid license at the time of arrest.
Court for a First OVUII in Hawaii
Let’s go over what your penalties may be from an OVUII conviction in court. Remember that these penalties differ from your administrative penalties.
Your Ignition Interlock Requirement
If you are eligible, a Smart Start Ignition Interlock is your key to drive again after a first OVUII. Obtaining Your Ignition Interlock Restricted License
Once you have the Ignition Interlock in your vehicle, a licensed driver must drive your vehicle to your local Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) office. You must take the installation verification you received from your Smart Start service center to obtain your “II” or “Ignition Interlock” Restricted license. Remember that you may only drive a vehicle with the Ignition Interlock installed. Your program does not begin until your “II” Restricted license is issued.
TIP: The South Carolina DPPPS will be the overseeing Interlock authority if you have any questions about the program. You can email them at ignition@ppp.sc.gov or call 803-734-0019.
