Ignition Interlock devices don’t just prevent drivers who have been drinking from operating a vehicle. They also record specific information relating to attempts to start the vehicle using the device. With this information, the DMV can determine which drivers qualify for removal of the Ignition Interlock restriction and which drivers need the restriction to remain in place.
Under Colorado law, providers of Ignition Interlock devices must inspect each installed device at least once every 60 days and submit to the DMV monthly monitoring reports with the data stored on the device. Successful monitoring reports and device inspections allow drivers with Ignition Interlock-restricted licenses to stay on the road and earn back an unrestricted license as quickly as possible.
Inspection of the Ignition Interlock Device by the Provider in Colorado
Ignition Interlock-restricted drivers and device providers must schedule inspections at least once every 60 days. A driver’s failure to report for regular inspections can result in termination of the Ignition Interlock lease or license suspension for Ignition Interlock non-compliance. Because a current Ignition Interlock lease is a condition of the Ignition Interlock restriction, a terminated lease will lead to suspension of that restriction and, with it, the loss of driving privileges until a new lease is in place. So, restricted drivers should make scheduling and attending Ignition Interlock inspections a high priority.
During an inspection, the Ignition Interlock inspector verifies that the device is installed and functioning properly, downloads the data maintained on the device, and looks for any signs of tampering. Tampering includes any attempt to intercept, bypass, or interfere with the device. Any suspected tampering must be reported to the DMV within five days and can lead to the loss of driving privileges.

Ignition Interlock Monitoring Reports to the DMV in Colorado
While an Ignition Interlock device is installed on a vehicle, it keeps track of all attempts to operate the vehicle, the results of every breath test, and any lockouts resulting from a failed test. The Ignition Interlock provider submits this data to the DMV in monthly monitoring reports. If any lockouts are recorded, the Ignition Interlock provider reports the date and details of the failed breath test, including the alcohol level recorded in the driver’s sample.
Monthly reports are divided into calendar months, with each month designated as either “pass” or “fail.” Thus, failed tests on January 31 and February 1 would result in two failed reporting periods, while failures on January 30 and January 31 would result in only one failed reporting period.
Most Ignition Interlock-restricted drivers want to qualify for removal of the restriction as soon as possible. Receiving consistent, successful monitoring reports is the key to accomplishing this goal. If the provider reports failures for three or more months out of any consecutive 12-month period, the Ignition Interlock restriction on the driver’s license will be extended for an additional year after the end of the current restriction. Or, if the original restriction had already concluded at the time of the lockout, the restriction will be renewed.
Of course, the goal of every driver seeking early removal of an Ignition Interlock restriction should be zero failed reporting periods. For first-time offenders, uninterrupted successful reports can lead to removal of the restriction in as few as four months, assuming you were not designated a Persistent Drunk Driver by the DMV for refusing a chemical test or for having a BAC above .15. For persistent or habitual offenders, it will take longer, but, even so, successful reports are vital to reacquiring an unrestricted license as soon as eligible by law.
A driver who believes his or her Ignition Interlock restriction has been wrongfully extended can request a review hearing. At the hearing, the driver is permitted to present arguments and evidence in support of rescinding or reducing the extension. Administrative hearings can be tricky, so it is usually a good idea for drivers preparing for a hearing, or unsure whether they should request a hearing, to consult with an experienced DUI defense attorney.

Lowering Ignition Interlock’s Breath Volume in Texas
To lower your Ignition Interlock’s breath volume in Texas, your attorney may file a request with the court. You will need to provide formal documentation signed by your doctor to the court that required you to use the device. The document needs to list your medical condition and prove that because of that condition, you cannot take a complete breath test at the current breath volume of the device.
Notify Your Ignition Interlock Company
Once the court approves your request, you should notify your Ignition Interlock vendor, such as Smart Start. Your court State Authority can reach out to us as well. Smart Start will send a separate form to your court judge to fill out and return. Once Smart Start receives the completed form, we will lower the breath volume so you can take a complete breath test.
Remember that we must have authorization from your State Authority to lower your Ignition Interlock’s breath volume!

Does an Ignition Interlock Drain My Car Battery?
Does an Ignition Interlock drain my car battery? You may have researched this question and seen a few sources say either yes or no. So, what is the correct answer? Here’s the truth behind whether an Ignition Interlock Device drains your car’s battery.
Ignition Interlocks Work With, Not Against, Your Car’s Battery
Many accessories with your vehicle draw a minimal amount of electricity, such as your clock, radio, the internal memory of your engine computers, or even cables such as your cellphone charger. Leaving your headlights on overnight or not closing your trunk completely will cause your car’s battery to drain much more than any electrical accessory!
When you have an Ignition Interlock installed into your electrical system, the device will draw a tiny amount of power from your car’s battery as well, but it is never in such an amount that would drain your car battery totally. If your vehicle’s battery does die, it is typically because of an old battery or a defective alternator. If this occurs, you may need to visit a mechanic. Read our blog to find out the process of taking your car to a mechanic if you have an Ignition Interlock.
Ignition Interlocks draw less than ¼ of an amp while the vehicle is not operating, and ½ of an amp when it is preparing for a breath test. This is a very minimal amount compared to your car’s stereo, or clock!
Use Your Vehicle on a Consistent Basis
Your car may not start if you do not use it for a while, too. Your accessories are constantly using your car’s battery, so if you are not charging the battery by not starting your car, your battery will likely die. Make sure you are using your vehicle to maintain its battery power!
Checking Your Current Battery Voltage with the Ignition Interlock
With Smart Start, clients have an easy way to check their car battery’s current voltage right on their Ignition Interlock screen.
To check your car battery’s voltage, press the pound or # sign, then the number 2 on your device’s keypad.
Is your battery below 12 volts? You may want to charge or change your car battery.

What Happens if I Get My Ignition Interlock Wet?
Did you get your Ignition Interlock wet? If you accidentally dropped the device into your water cup, or something spilled on the device, it will probably need to be fixed or swapped, just like any other electronic device. It happens, but there’s a process that Smart Start can walk you through to ensure your device is working properly again.
Here’s what to do if your Ignition Interlock got wet.
What to Do if You Get Your Ignition Interlock Wet
First, it’s important to remember that you cannot drive a motor vehicle without an Ignition Interlock!
If your Ignition Interlock is inoperable, you’ll need to tow your vehicle to your nearest Smart Start service center. Make sure to call our Customer Care Center at (800) 831-3299 for next steps according to your state’s tow policy. Then, ride with a family member or friend to the service center, and we will help you get back on the road with a working Ignition Interlock.
Option two is if your Ignition Interlock can still operate even after getting wet. If your state allows it, disconnect your head unit and take it inside to dry out. As of March 2018, Wisconsin and New York do NOT allow you to disconnect your head unit! In these two states, it may be considered a violation of your state rules and regulations to disconnect your head unit. Only a Smart Start service center can swap out your device because of your state requirements.
In states where your jurisdiction allows you to disconnect the head unit, after it has dried out, you can reconnect your head unit to see if it works. If the Ignition Interlock device does work, you still need to make sure to visit your Smart Start service center so our technicians can make sure there are no problems.
If you have any questions during your Ignition Interlock program, our Customer Care Center is standing by to assist you. Just give us a call at (800) 831-3299.

Why Vending Machine Breathalyzers Won’t Work in Bars
Having a breathalyzer in bars or night clubs in theory seems helpful. Patrons can, for fun, test their breath alcohol concentration level (BrAC) to see how much alcohol they’ve consumed after inserting a few quarters.
But how accurate are they?
How Vending Machine Breathalyzers Work
Vending machine breathalyzers are pretty simple. Most work like this: After inserting some change, you place a straw into the machine and blow into the straw for a few seconds. The breathalyzer will then read your BrAC (breath alcohol) level, which is similar to your BAC (blood alcohol concentration) level, a more familiar acronym to the public.
Although simple to use, vending machine breathalyzers are not the most accurate alcohol testing device. Why? Because the technology in vending machine breathalyzers are simple as well.
The Accuracy of Vending Machine Breathalyzers
Vending machine breathalyzers are solely for entertainment and education. It is a helpful tool for self-monitoring, and possibly making a good decision. But they will not prevent someone from getting behind the wheel drunk and attempting to drive.
Even if you use a vending machine breathalyzer and have a BrAC level that’s below .08, the legal limit in all states, you can still get pulled over by law enforcement for reckless driving and arrested. The vending machine breathalyzer creates a false sense of confidence. Patrons may believe they can drive after having a few drinks at the bar because they had a BrAC level below the legal limit rather than making the right choice and designating a sober driver or using a ridesharing app.
Police-grade personal breath testers (PBTs) and Ignition Interlocks are other alcohol testing devices. The difference between these devices and vending machine breathalyzers is PBTs and Ignition Interlocks have fuel cell sensors. Fuel cells are alcohol-specific. These sensors are the most accurate technology to date that evaluates a person’s BrAC level which correlates to an accurate BAC.
Law enforcement uses PBTs for roadside tests, and courts or state offices order Ignition Interlocks for DUI offenders because these devices are accurate and certified and tested. Even the public, such as parents of teenage drivers, will lease an Ignition Interlock voluntarily for peace of mind when teenagers get behind the wheel. If the user can’t pass the Ignition Interlock’s initial breath test, the user’s vehicle will not start. The Ignition Interlock is a fool-proof way to prevent drinking and driving.
Ignition Interlocks: The Only Reliable Breathalyzers to Prevent Drinking and Driving
If you need to use an Ignition Interlock, you are getting back on the road with a reliable, accurate device. There are federal and state-specific guidelines for its functionality, so you aren’t using just any breathalyzer off the market.
If you want to test yourself before getting behind the wheel, an Ignition Interlock is the best technology that will reveal whether you are too intoxicated by alcohol to drive.
Voluntary Ignition Interlock programs by Smart Start are simple. If you want to make sure you are OK to drive after consuming alcohol, an Ignition Interlock is the most affordable and reliable option.
Need an Ignition Interlock?
Whether you need to, or voluntarily want to, install an Ignition Interlock, Smart Start’s here for you. Our Ignition Interlock is discreet and easy to use. How Is My Ignition Interlock Compliance Monitored in Colorado?
