There is one thing that clients know about Smart Start, and that’s reliability with excellent customer service. This means we try to make sure your Interlock Device program is seamless from start to finish.
We do understand that some clients need an adjustment to their Interlock Devices because of a medical condition, such as having asthma or other breathing problems.
If you have this type of condition, do not worry about running out of air when you perform your Interlock Device tests. We can customize your Device to require a lower volume of breath while still maintaining state compliance, and help you out!
How to Adjust Your Interlock Device
To change your Interlock Device’s tests, only a few simple steps need to be taken. Keep in mind that each state has its own rules for adjusting your Interlock based on a medical condition. For example, Florida requires specific forms that need to be filled out by your doctor. Some only need a doctor’s note and others may involve your State Authority providing us the right paperwork.
Unfortunately, a handful of states do not allow us to adjust your Interlock Device.
In any case, you need to reach out to your State Authority for approval. You can always call our 24/7/365 customer care center team at 800-831-3299, and learn about the proper procedures in your state.

Processing Requests
After you receive approval from your State Authority, the process for your request can take about two to three business days. You will receive an email letting you know that your request has been approved.
Once approved, and you have spoken with a customer care representative, you will then need to schedule an appointment. Then, just bring your vehicle on your scheduled appointment to your nearest Smart Start service center. Our licensed technicians can then readjust your Device for you.
Do you need an Interlock Device? Choose Smart Start, the nation’s number one Interlock provider with fast testing, accurate results and the most discreet appearance.

Can I Take My Interlock Device Out of the Country?
What happens if you are ordered to use an Interlock Device but you need to travel? Can you vacation in Mexico or Canada, for instance, and take the Interlock Device out of the country while you’re on an Interlock Device program? There is no black or white answer to this question. In fact, this question must be answered on a case-by-case basis, if you can travel with your Interlock at all.
There are different factors to think about if you want to ask your State Authority about this option.
Customer Service Support
Constant customer service support is a factor a lot of clients take relief in during their program. If you decide to take the Interlock Device out of the country, receiving assistance could be difficult. For instance, if a Lockout were to happen, you would not be able to reach any of our service centers within the U.S. Although Smart Start is an international provider, every country’s regulations are different, and will not apply to your program in the U.S.
Stay in the U.S. For Your Program
Smart Start recommends staying in the U.S. while on your Interlock Device program. As well as the above reasons, you could receive unintended legal consequences.
Remaining in your state of conviction during your period with the Interlock will save you confusion and stress. You’ll be able to easily access the support and assistance you need, as well as being able to visit our service center on your scheduled calibration appointments.
Speaking of appointments, calibration updates for your Interlock must occur at our service center every 30 or 60 days, depending on the state you live in. Keeping up with these appointments is important! If you miss one, this could result in additional charges and consequences from your State Authority.
Do you still need to install an Interlock Device? Call Smart Start at 800-831-3299 or fill out our quick and simple online form for a quote.

How to Use Your Interlock Device if You Share Your Vehicle
If you must install an Interlock Device but you share your vehicle with someone, you may be wondering if this will comply with your court or state orders.
Tips for Sharing Your Vehicle with an Interlock Device Installed
At Smart Start, sharing your vehicle with an Interlock Device installed is no problem. Anyone can drive your vehicle, but they will need to pass the prompted breath tests as well from the Interlock Device. This means the initial/startup test, rolling tests, etc. Keep in mind that each state’s regulations are different.
Some states, such as Florida, will need proper documentation. This paperwork should list who would possibly drive your vehicle. Our online chat team that you can reach via our online quote page can provide you these forms. You can also call our 24/7/365 customer care center at 800-831-3299 for assistance.
Make sure you trust the person you are sharing your vehicle with! Even if you are not driving, all breath tests will be recorded, and these recordings will show in your State Authority’s reports.
Your Installation Appointment
It may be a good idea for your spouse, or whomever is sharing your vehicle, to accompany you to your installation appointment. When you visit your nearest Smart Start service center, our licensed technicians will provide hands-on training so you and your spouse are comfortable with testing on the Device.
Whichever decision you make for your Smart Start Interlock, we want your program to be successful and easy. If you ever need assistance, feel free to call our team at 800-831-3299. We are always available to help, even during weekends and holidays.

Can I get a DWI while operating … a horse and buggy?
It’s an interesting question. What exactly defines a DWI or DUI? Most people know that if you are driving impaired in a vehicle, you’ll be convicted of these types of charges.
Would someone be charged of a DWI/DUI while operating a horse and buggy though?
It appears to be that way in some states.
Horse and Buggy DWI/DUI Incidents
In New York, a 17-year-old boy had an open container of beer while operating a horse-drawn buggy. Police chased him down after he took off when they tried to stop him. The teen was charged with unlawful possession of an alcoholic beverage while being underage, among other offenses.
In Pennsylvania, an Amish man was arrested on drunk driving charges while he was sleeping in his buggy. His BrAC level was .018, more than twice the nationwide limit of .08.
Although DUI means Driving Under the Influence, states may consider people riding impaired on a horse-drawn buggy as operating, or driving, a ‘vehicle’ anyway. In any case, travel on public roadways while intoxicated is a dangerous choice, no matter which mode of transportation you choose.
Even using a wheelchair while intoxicated can mean a DUI, or riding a horse by itself.
All states have different regulations when it comes to impaired driving. Some even have different acronyms, such as OWI. In addition, some states will use DUI for one meaning, and DWI for another. We cover what DUI/DWI means in a previous blog that might clear these definitions up.

How Can I Avoid an Alcohol Violation in My Ignition Interlock Device?
Your Interlock Device can record all types of violations that could occur. That’s why one of the most common questions we get is regarding how you can avoid an alcohol violation on your Ignition Interlock Device.
Your Interlock will detect even small traces of alcohol because of its accurate, alcohol-specific fuel cell technology. For instance, your Device can tell what your exact breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) level is, or if the attempted test was even performed by a human.
Some people claim that they receive violations from their device by accident. Interlock Devices with fuel cell technology do not produce false readings. Some products that we use every day have a low amount of alcohol, such as mouth sprays. Therefore, when you get in your car and take your initial test after using mouth spray, the Interlock Device will detect that alcohol in the product.
Be Smart to Avoid an Alcohol Violation on Your Ignition Interlock
Smart Start recommends you swish your mouth with water before taking any tests. Doing this will help the alcohol from the mouth spray, or other products, dissipate at a faster rate. If your results indicate a fast decline in BrAC level, this can help confirm that you were not consuming alcohol at the time the reading was recorded.
When clients receive violations during their program, it is usually because alcohol is present during an initial or rolling retest. Violations can also occur if a client skips tests, has a BrAC level result at or above the state fail level during a rolling retest or the Interlock Device detects circumvention. Circumvention usually means the head unit is disconnected while the client is driving or someone is attempting to start the vehicle without providing a proper breath test.
A Friendly Tip
You can check your violation points on your Interlock Device by pressing the # key, then 3 on the keypad.

I Need An Ignition Interlock Device But Don’t Have A Vehicle – What Do I Do?
Smart Start offers the best in alcohol monitoring technology so our clients can get back on the road. Many people come to us based on a court or state order that requires them to install an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) in their vehicle.
That seems OK, but what if you don’t have a vehicle? How will you comply with what the court or state requires?
There are several options available to you so you can complete your program, and continue with your routine.
A Family Member or Friend’s Vehicle
We suggest installing your IID into a vehicle owned by a family member or friend. Depending on your state, you’ll only need the registered owner’s written permission, or a specific form. This form can be provided to you by our customer service representatives via email or chat on our website. However, before installation, you should check with the court or state, whomever required you to install an IID, to determine if this is OK.
Make sure to ask your State Authority the options you have, since every state is different with their Interlock Device regulations. When you call Smart Start, you can also ask our customer service team so we can help you out as much as we can.
SMART Mobile, Our Portable Alcohol Monitoring Device
Another option may occur where your court could sign you up for our SMART Mobile, a portable alcohol monitoring device that you can take anywhere. You cannot choose the SMART Mobile yourself, however, since it is a court-ordered product. Keep in mind that some court orders will specify you need an Interlock Device only!
Smart Start looks forward to partnering with you throughout your program! Choosing us means you’ve chosen a reliable and affordable Device that is compliant with every state we operate in. We also try to make sure you are getting the best deal by offering free installs or a free first month on your lease, although every state’s specials do not currently have a special or are different.

WARN, FAIL or VIOLATION message on an Ignition Interlock Device
At Smart Start, a successful and seamless Interlock Device program is our number one goal for all our clients. We do understand, however, that a warn, fail or violation message on your Ignition Interlock Device could occur as a test result on your Device.
So, what do these types of results mean? Here’s a closer look at warn, fail or violation messages on your Ignition Interlock device.
WARN Message
A warn message on your Ignition Interlock Device means that alcohol is present in your breath sample, but is below your state’s fail level. The device will not stop your vehicle following a warn result. Be cautious, however. It is possible that you could fail subsequent tests if you decide to continue driving.
FAIL Message
A fail message on your Ignition Interlock Device means that alcohol is detected at or above your state’s specific fail level. It may not mean that you are at the violation level indicated in your state’s standards. For initial tests, you will not be able to start your vehicle. If you need assistance, our 24/7/365 Customer Care center is available, even during weekends and holidays, at (800) 831-3299.
VIOLATION Message
A violation message on your Ignition Interlock Device is a little different than a fail reading.
Violations could mean the Interlock Device detected alcohol at or above your state’s fail level, but there are other reasons as well. For example, if you missed any of your tests, or the Device detected tampering, circumventing, bypassing or disabling of the Device, this will be a violation result.
An example of a Violation Lockout screen reading on your Interlock. Some states may not list a countdown on your Interlock Device. This means you will need to visit a Smart Start service center.
Keep in mind that if the allowable number of warn, fail or violation messages in your state occurs, your Device will go into Lockout Mode. Some states require that the Lockout Mode occurs if you receive one violation. If you do go into Lockout Mode, visit our website to learn about Lockout Mode rules in your state, and how you can receive Ignition Interlock Lockout Instructions. You can also call our 24/7/365 Customer Care center at (800) 831-3299 for any help that you need.
Don’t forget, our website is a resource for you if you have any questions about your Ignition Interlock Device. You can read general Interlock FAQs or your state’s regulations on Interlocks.
Do you need to make an Interlock Device appointment? We can also provide you a quote. Call Smart Start today at (800) 831-3299 or fill out our quick and simple online form.

Will This Interlock Device Void My Vehicle’s Warranty?
Getting an Interlock Device installed in your vehicle can seem a little worrisome. If it is going to be a part of your vehicle, will an Interlock Device void a vehicle’s warranty? The short answer, when installing an Interlock Device, is no.
Why? Because Interlock Devices are an aftermarket accessory for your vehicle.
Why Interlock Devices Won’t Void Your Vehicle’s Warranty
An aftermarket accessory, per the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), is “a part made by a company other than the vehicle manufacturer or the original equipment manufacturer.” Aftermarket accessories are considered as parts that do not affect the operation of your vehicle, which defines an Interlock Device.
In other words, just like installing an aftermarket alarm system for your car, your Interlock Device will not void your warranty. Think of the Interlock as an add-on accessory to your vehicle that is temporary, not as an actual change.
Interlock Provider Research
Make sure you conduct some research on reputable, state-approved vendors before choosing an Interlock Device. Some Interlock companies do not have licensed, qualified technicians taking care of your vehicle. This could lead to vehicle damage when they install or remove the Device.
Smart Start has only the best products and service in the Interlock Device industry. Our technicians are fully licensed and qualified to take the best care of your vehicle. They will also provide you hands-on training with your Interlock before you leave the service center.
Both our SSI-20/30™ and SSI-20/20™ has fuel cell technology, which is alcohol-specific.
Having this technology and service means we are providing you the utmost accuracy, safety and speed in Interlock Devices.
We hope we have alleviated some of the fears that may have come to mind regarding Interlocks.
If you are with Smart Start and ever have any questions about your program, feel free to call our 24/7/365 bilingual customer care center at 800-831-3299.

Can I put an Interlock Device on my Motorcycle or Boat?
Since Interlock Devices usually get installed in cars, can they operate in other motor vehicles, such as boats or motorcycles?
Yes, they can.
Anything with a constant power supply and starter (even snowmobiles, golf carts and RV’s) can have an Interlock Device installed into its system. Other modes of transportation, however, like skateboards and bicycles, do not apply since they are not motor vehicles.
Additional Interlock Device Tips
Keep in mind that regulations for an Interlock Device on a motorcycle are managed state-by-state, not by your vendor. This means the type of motor vehicle you can install an Interlock Device is up to your state. Virginia, for example, will allow Interlock Devices to be installed on motorcycles, but some won’t.
Why Should I Not Have an Interlock in My Motorcycle or Boat?
Having an Interlock Device on a motorcycle or boat is not only potentially dangerous. There are practical reasons to consider as well.
A motorcycle and boat have more exposure to the weather than a vehicle. If it snows or rains, the boat or motorcycle Interlock Device installed may be exposed to the elements, which may cause some damage.
So, how does an Ignition Interlock work? Essentially, if the motorcycle Interlock prompts for a test, a beeping sound will occur. It is very difficult to hear this test prompt while on a moving motorcycle.
If you only own a motorcycle but are court-ordered to use an Interlock Device, ask your State Authority or a Smart Start customer service representative for more information about your options.
If you have any questions or need assistance, you can always call our bilingual Customer Care Center any time of the day at (800) 831-3299. We are even available during weekends and holidays!
Do you need an Interlock Device for your vehicle? Call Smart Start at (800) 831-3299 or fill out our quick and simple online form.
