For Illinois drivers, a DUI is typically a Class A misdemeanor on the first or second offense, subject to license suspension for at least a year, plus fines and possible jail time. Subsequent DUIs, or DUIs with aggravating factors such as a high BAC, can result in felony charges with mandatory jail time and fines up to $25,000.
Illinois drivers can apply for a Monitoring Device Driving Permit (MDDP) to retain driving privileges while their license is suspended for DUI. To get your MDDP, you’ll need to have a Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device installed on your vehicle. (This is the same device known as an Ignition Interlock Device or IID in other states.) You can find more information about Ignition Interlocks in Illinois in our Illinois BAIID Guide.
