Why 5% Craft Beer Will Get You More Drunk Than 4% Lagers
Picture this. Person A is drinking a craft beer with 5% ABV at a microbrewery. Meanwhile, Person B is watching TV at home and enjoying a Dos Equis with 4% ABV.
Within the hour, Person A drank two craft beers and Person B drank six Dos Equis. Person B is probably feeling more impaired than Person A, right?
Not necessarily. In fact, there’s a big difference in alcohol consumption between the two people.
It all comes down to the science of alcohol, how people process it and some math
The same article uses the U.K.’s alcohol measurement, which is in units. To put the math in perspective, one standard 12-ounce drink in the U.S. is 1.77 units in the U.K.
Here’s two beers for comparison:
A 12-ounce beer with 4% ABV – equals 1.4 alcohol units
A 12-ounce beer with 5% ABV – equals 1.8 alcohol units
Drinking the beer with 4% ABV in an hour means you’ve processed 1 unit of alcohol already.
That leaves you with .4 units of alcohol still in your system.
Let’s keep going. After another hour with one more of the same beer, you’re now at .8 units.
If we switched the drinks, and used a 5% beer in the same situation, you would reach .8 units after only one hour!
Although your level of intoxication would not be much, it is eye-opening to see the difference between the two drinks. If you kept drinking a 5% beer, it could mean you’re getting more intoxicated than you intended.
Smart Start urges everyone to drink responsibly, and to never drink and drive. Ask a sober friend to drive you home, or get an Uber, Lyft or taxi.

Can I install an Ignition Interlock into a rental car?
Do you need to use a rental car during your Ignition Interlock program? Or are you planning an out-of-town vacation and need a temporary rental car?
Every state’s regulations are different when it comes to these questions about rental vehicles and needing to use an Ignition Interlock.
Ignition Interlocks and Rental Car Companies
Using a rental car while on an Ignition Interlock program will be difficult. You will need permission from the rental car company for our technicians to install the Device in their vehicle. In nearly all cases, however, rental car companies will not allow an Ignition Interlock to be installed in their vehicles. And if you have a restricted license, the rental car company may reject your request to rent one of their vehicles.
It may be difficult to get the sign-off on renting a car, but there are other options for you to pursue. Ask someone else to drive their car, or take a plane to your destination to avoid the hassle. Completing your Ignition Interlock program and following all court requirements is the fastest way to drive safely again with an unrestricted license.
Borrowing Another Person’s Vehicle
You can install your Ignition Interlock into someone else’s vehicle, but you’ll need written permission from the owner to do so. You can check with our Customer Care Center, and we will provide you the forms or paperwork that you need.
As always, you can call Smart Start’s Customer Care Center for any questions you may have during your Interlock program at 800-831-3299. We will be able to inform you of everything you need for your Ignition Interlock requirements.
Need an Ignition Interlock? Smart Start guarantees an easy and successful Interlock program with the best in customer service! We can provide you a quote and set up an installation appointment for you. Call our team today at 800-831-3299 or fill out our online form.

What if I need an Ignition Interlock but I drive for my job?
If you have a commercial driver’s license (CDL) but must use an Ignition Interlock after a DUI conviction, Smart Start can provide simple solutions for you so you can still fulfill your court requirements.
What do I do if I need an Ignition Interlock but have a CDL?
Every Ignition Interlock program’s regulations are state-by-state, so one’s case in Texas may be different than one in New York. Because your CDL permits you to transport people or items, you are under a different set of rules with your Ignition Interlock program than a regular driver. Regardless, as a nationwide leader, Smart Start will be able to assist you.
When you call Smart Start’s knowledgeable 24/7/365 Customer Care Center, we can also provide the information you need before you set up an Ignition Interlock appointment.
License Suspension and Ignition Interlocks
There may be a chance that you will get your CDL suspended if you are convicted of a DUI.
For example, in California, your CDL suspension period will last at least a year. However, you will be eligible to drive your company’s vehicle without an Interlock once the suspension period has ended. Your company must be aware of your DUI, though, and grant you the permission to drive its vehicle.
For Pennsylvania, there is the option to apply for an occupational limited license (OLL) after your driving privileges are suspended because of an DUI. This will restrict your driving privileges, but you’ll be able to drive to and from work or school. You’ll usually need an Ignition Interlock installed in your non-commercial vehicle to meet OLL requirements.
Need an Ignition Interlock? We’ll be able to provide you a quick quote and set you up with an installation appointment. We will even try to schedule you for the same day and provide any discounts that may be available in your area!

[SPANISH] Smart Start Ignition Interlock Training Video
Watch Smart Start’s Ignition Interlock Spanish training video, or read its transcript below.
Hola y bienvenido a Smart Start.

How Do Eco Cars Affect Ignition Interlocks?
Vehicles now have an economical function that automatically stops someone’s engine at red lights and stop signs to reduce fuel consumption.
What some people may wonder is if these stop-and-go vehicles affect Ignition Interlocks.
Ignition Interlocks Installed in Eco, or Stop-And-Start, Vehicles
At Smart Start, our Ignition Interlocks can be installed on nearly any vehicle.
With manufacturers developing and selling eco cars, Smart Start’s Interlocks are keeping up the pace.
Because of this advanced technology, eco cars and hybrid engine vehicles will need extra time for installation. The complex wiring requires our qualified technicians to take extra time to take care of your vehicle.
When you call our Customer Care Center, we will help you by setting up an appointment and noting you have a start-stop car at your nearest Smart Start location. We recommend you book an all-day appointment. There may also be some additional fees involved because of the complexity of the vehicle. This may not mean your appointment will take all day, but it is a possibility! We want to ensure that we are taking utmost caution and care to your vehicle.
What Exactly is a Start-and-Stop Vehicle?
An eco-friendly car with start-stop technology saves your fuel by turning your engine off when you come to a stop. This feature will even disable the engine for only a couple seconds at a red light. This technology is in both gasoline and hybrid engine vehicles.
Safety in Start-and-Stop Cars and Ignition Interlocks
There is one thing stop-and-starts and Interlocks have in common. They both ensure safety when someone gets behind the wheel.
Ignition Interlocks can physically stop someone who’s intoxicated from driving their vehicle. If someone blows into the Interlock’s mouthpiece and they fail the test, they will not be able to get on the road drunk.
Need an Ignition Interlock? Our team will be able to set up an appointment for you and provide you a quote. Call Smart Start at 800-831-3299 or fill out our quick and easy online form.

What happens if I can’t pass my Ignition Interlock test?
What happens if I can’t pass my Ignition Interlock test?
If you aren’t able to pass your Ignition Interlock test, it won’t necessarily mean you’ll receive consequences. The first step is to not worry and keep calm. Sometimes it just takes some adjusting with your testing pattern.
When your test interrupts with a low-pitched beep from your Device, it is letting you know the test was aborted. Make sure you read what the Interlock says on its screen to determine what caused you to not pass your test. Your Ignition Interlock will make a ‘click’ sound when you pass a test.
Whichever result you receive, make sure that you swish around some water before attempting the next test. Water will clear any possible contaminants out of your mouth. We also recommend taking a couple of deep breaths before testing. This allows your lungs to provide more air, and makes testing easier.
Here’s some abort-type messages you may receive on your Ignition Interlock and its meanings:
“Blow harder”
Your breath sample did not last long enough for your test to register. You also may not be providing a strong-enough airflow. After receiving this message, you may want to take a few deep breaths, then try again with a stronger and longer airflow.
“Hum stronger” or “Blow longer”
You began humming either too late or too soon. It might also mean that your hum was not strong enough to register. Read this blog on Blow Longer for more information on how to adjust your testing when this message appears.
“Blow softer”
Your breath sample was too strong. Our blog covers how to adjust your testing pattern if you receive the Blow Softer message.
“Don’t inhale”
You might have inhaled while your lips were still around the mouthpiece, therefore sucking air into the Device. Always inhale away from the mouthpiece before testing.
“Abort tamper”
You covered the vent on the back of your Interlock while blowing, or there is something in your mouthpiece. Abort Tamper can be explained in more detail on the Smart Start blog.
“Mouth closer”
You’ll need to hold the mouthpiece more firmly against your mouth to avoid letting the Device pull away as you blow. Make sure your mouth covers the entire mouthpiece. To complete your test successfully, you will need to blow steadily for the full time of your test. Keep both your breath volume and your hum even during testing.
“Abort lock”
You have exceeded the allowed number of aborts during a 15-minute period and will need to wait until the countdown completes before you attempt another test. Use this time to take another drink of water and take several deep breaths. This is not a violation! This message means the Ignition Interlock needs to reset itself for you to test again.
Remember, if you are still having trouble with your Device, Smart Start’s always here to help. Call our Customer Care Center at 800-831-3299 at any time and we will be able to assist you! When you call, follow the prompts for a “current customer,” and then select 3 for “Product Questions/Device Troubleshooting.” You can also visit our website or blog for additional tips and advice.
Do you need to know more about Violation-type results on your Interlock, or Lockout Mode? Our blog can answer your questions and assist in what to do if you receive these types of messages.

SERIES – What Does the ABORT TAMPER Result on My Ignition Interlock Mean?
Smart Start is built on reliable and efficient technology so our clients can go through an easy and successful Ignition Interlock program.
Sometimes abort messages can show as a result from your Interlock testing. One of those messages is ABORT TAMPER.
What ABORT TAMPER Means
Your Ignition Interlock will usually read ABORT TAMPER for one of these reasons.
ABORT TAMPER could mean that there is something blocking the flow of air through the Device. An item might have been blown into the mouthpiece, such as a piece of gum, while testing.
Another common reason the ABORT TAMPER message happens is if your hand is blocking the vent on the back of the Interlock.
The Ignition Interlock will also display ABORT TAMPER if it detects something blowing into the Device that is not a person’s breath.
There’s no need to worry if you receive this message. You’ll be back on the road in no time at all after adjusting accordingly for your breath test.
Here’s what to do if you receive ABORT TAMPER on your Ignition Interlock.
What do I do if I get this reading?
Check and see if you are blocking the vent with your hand and remove it. If this is not the case, check the mouthpiece for any obstacles. Once this is done, try to take a test again after the Interlock screen reads BLOW.
If you are still receiving ABORT TAMPER on your Ignition Interlock after several testing attempts, please call our Customer Care Center at 800-880-3394 so we can help you.
Do you need an Ignition Interlock to meet a court or state order? When you call our team, Smart Start can set up an installation appointment for you at your nearest service center. We’ll also provide you a quote and any other information you may need before your install day.

What will happen if someone else gets a DUI while driving my car?
What happens if a friend is driving your car but receives a DUI? Will this mean you’ll get in trouble with your court?
These questions are answered on a case-by-case basis. It also varies state-by-state. Here’s a few general factors to consider, however.
If your friend received a DUI in your car without any accidents or collision
Your car may get seized. You’ll then need to pay fees related to getting your car returned to you.
In some states, your registration sticker could be taken or suspended.
Letting someone drive your car when you know their driver’s license is suspended or revoked could mean you’ll face criminal charges. This also counts for individuals who need an Ignition Interlock Device. If someone is on a suspended license because of a DUI, they may need an Interlock, but this is dependent on your state’s regulations.
If your friend received a DUI in your car that included a traffic collision
All of the above could happen, plus a lot of headache and stress from personal liability damage, related costs and insurance issues.
So, what happens if you had an Ignition Interlock in your vehicle?
Ignition Interlocks are the only tool that can successfully prevent drunken driving. If you have an Ignition Interlock, your vehicle will not start at all if someone fails the initial breath test, per your jurisdiction’s requirements. All tests, whether by you or by someone using your car, are subject to the Interlock requirements of your jurisdiction.
Some states will still hold you responsible for the violations received on your Ignition Interlock. Others, however, will look at all the data and conclude it isn’t your responsibility, but do not take your chances!
If you are worried about adding any more penalties to your court requirements, do not let anyone drive impaired in your vehicle. Even if you only suspect they are impaired, it is better to find another ride rather than risking all the consequences.
Do you need an Ignition Interlock? Our 24/7/365 Customer Care Center will help you out by providing you a quote. We can also set up an installation appointment for you. Call Smart Start today at 800-831-3299 or fill out our online form.

Can I get an Ignition Interlock if I’m not a U.S. Citizen?
If you are working toward becoming a U.S. citizen, are you still required to use an Ignition Interlock?
Do I need an Ignition Interlock if I’m not a U.S. Citizen?
Keeping our roadways safe involves everyone who lives in America. If a state issues you a license to allow you to drive, then you are subject to the U.S. laws surrounding the use of that license. Anyone residing in the U.S. must install an Ignition Interlock if they are required to do so.
An Ignition Interlock may be required per a state jurisdiction or court order resulting from a DUI arrest. Courts can still order an Ignition Interlock as a condition of bond or probation.
Ignition Interlocks as an Option for Utmost Safety
Individuals who are not U.S. citizens can even sign up for an Ignition Interlock on a voluntary basis. Some immigrant attorneys will recommend this option to their clients.
Keep in mind! Every jurisdiction, county and/or state has different regulations for DUI cases. You should consult with an attorney regarding your residency status, and the issues you may face due to U.S., state and local requirements. You should also consult with an attorney any time you are arrested for a DUI.

Why do I have to lease an Ignition Interlock?
The lease of an Ignition Interlock is your best choice when you are court or state-required to install one. Buying an Interlock may seem easier, but in reality, it could incur more costly issues against you.
For example, you could face more costs if the Interlock gets damaged or stolen outside of a warranty. The lease option also protects you if the Device malfunctions.
You do, however, have the choice in picking the right Ignition Interlock provider for you.
Choose a Certified Ignition Interlock Provider
You’ll want to make sure that the provider you choose is certified in the state where you will use your Interlock. The right Ignition Interlock provider will lease their product to you. This means you won’t have to worry about long-term contracts.
Smart Start, for example, is a nationwide leader that operates in 46 states. When your vendor is fully compliant with the states they operate in, you will have a smooth-sailing Interlock program. In fact, you could receive more consequences from your court or state office if you are using a non-compliant Ignition Interlock.
Voluntary Ignition Interlocks
If you are looking for an Ignition Interlock to use of your own accord, buying one is an option. However, you still do not really know the accuracy of the Interlock or the type of customer service you’ll receive with vendors who are not state-certified. Be careful and conduct the proper research – leasing an Ignition Interlock by a state-approved vendor is still in your best interest.

An article from Draft Magazine by beer connoisseur and journalist, Joe Stange, lays out the reason why someone will get more drunk off a couple of 5% craft beers versus drinking six bottles of Dos Equis.
It all comes down to the science of alcohol, how people process it and some math
The same article uses the U.K.’s alcohol measurement, which is in units. To put the math in perspective, one standard 12-ounce drink in the U.S. is 1.77 units in the U.K.
Here’s two beers for comparison:
Because alcohol processes through every person differently, which is dependent on factors such as your age, weight, gender, etc., let’s say we are discussing a casual drinker with an average build.
4% Lagers Versus 5% Craft Beers

For more detailed information and tips, visit the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) website.
