SMART START’S BACKGROUND

Smart Start is a U.S.-based, alcohol monitoring corporation headquartered in Grapevine, Texas. Smart Start’s background began in 1992. Since then, we have become the largest provider of Ignition Interlock Devices in the United States while also providing portable alcohol monitoring services.

The company formally known as Smart Start, Inc. is now registered under the name 1A Smart Start, LLC. Smart Start was founded in 1992, and quickly became a leader in the rapidly growing Ignition Interlock industry with more than 600 employees.

Smart Start began with the exclusive service and distribution of Ignition Interlock Devices (IID). Over the years, Smart Start changed and adapted to also include other alcohol monitoring services, such as portable devices. Smart Start opened for business with a focus on road safety and sobriety as a software-driven company that allows for non-subjective reporting and monitoring of their devices for clients.

To date, the company has serviced over 1 million U.S. clients, and has prevented over 11 million illegal vehicle starts. In addition, Smart Start has provided over one billion “safe” (under the legal limit) starts.

As an early trendsetter, Smart Start has set many industry standards:

  • First to offer camera technology for positive identification of the Ignition Interlock client
  • First to offer a bilingual call center to assist with product support
  • First to offer and provide continuing education programs/courses for state authorities
  • First coined and developed the concept of the Judicial Services Liaison (JSL), whose function is to communicate, educate, and inform about products and services
  • Introduction and continued development of its proprietary SmarTrac™ software platform
  • Successful launch of the innovative IN-HOM™ portable alcohol monitoring device, including the SMART Mobile™
