According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), you are required to have an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) installed if you were arrested for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) after July 1, 2002 , but the requirements may vary depending on your Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) and the circumstances of your arrest.

The Administrative Process and the Court Process

The two paths following a DUI in Florida are the Administrative Process, through the FLHSMV, and the Court Process through the judicial system. Each path operates independently from each other. Both paths may require alcohol and drug treatment education.

  • Administrative Process: The FLHSMV will suspend your driver’s license for a minimum of 6 months if you are convicted of a DUI. You may be eligible to have your license reinstated early if you install an IID.
  • Court Process: The court may also order you to install an IID as part of your sentence for a DUI conviction. The length of time you are required to have the IID installed will vary depending on the circumstances of your case.

Financial Assistance

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles may be able to help those who are unable to pay the full costs of their Interlock Device.
