Empowerment Through Partnerships is the American Probation and Parole Association’s (APPA) theme this year for Probation and Parole Week (PPP).

A week for pretrial, probation and parole personnel is celebrated by APPA every year. This year, PPP Week was July 16 through the 22^nd.

APPA’s website lists different resources to show how to recognize the hard work of supervision and corrections personnel, and increase awareness and show support for them.

APPA calls their approach to recovery, “The Triangle of Success.” The three angles represent communities, clients and employees. When all three come together, a positive outcome is established for people under supervision, and “to society as a whole.”

Probation and parole personnel use nationwide best practices and a case-by-case approach to all whom they supervise. These are a couple of different ways offenders can reach recovery, and reduce recidivism in drunk driving.

One approach pretrial, probation and parole officers use is educating DUI/DWI offenders with the Ignition Interlock, or car breathalyzer. Although courts and/or state offices require someone to use an Ignition Interlock, pretrial, probation and parole officers can still educate their client on the IID’s effective use.

Ignition Interlocks – The Roadway Safety Tool

Ignition Interlocks physically prevent drunken driving. If someone blows into the Ignition Interlock Device (IID) in their vehicle, and the user has alcohol in his or her breath, the vehicle will not start.
