2018 NHTSA Report: Traffic Fatalities Decrease but Drunk Driving Still Leading Cause of Death

A recent report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that there were 37,133 traffic fatalities in 2017. This is a nearly two percent decrease from 2016’s numbers and is a welcome direction since the subsequent rise of traffic fatalities in 2015 and 2016, but there is still room for improvement to enforce safer driving habits.

Alcohol-related traffic fatalities made up 29 percent of the 37,133 fatalities, meaning 11,000 lives were taken because of drunk driving. In this case, alcohol traffic deaths involve a driver or a motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or greater.

So, what can be done to combat these numbers and continue saving lives?

Driving Safety Laws and Life-Saving Technology

Many recent safety devices such as seat belts and airbags have substantially helped reduce traffic fatalities over the years. But when it comes to impaired driving, technology like Ignition Interlock Devices are contributing in significant ways to keep roads safe and change lives.

Ignition Interlocks are the only technology MADD supports because they can physically stop someone getting behind the wheel drunk. Many national studies prove the Interlock Device’s reliability as a tool to decrease drunk driving. They also reduce recidivism by changing users’ behavior and choices. We can continue the mission of Separating Drinking From Driving® with alternative solutions like ride-sharing apps, stronger enforcement, reliable technology and more education to the public.

If you are in a situation where you need an Ignition Interlock, Smart Start can assist! We provide an affordable program, a discreet Interlock Device and friendly customer service that’s available to you 24/7/365.
