Wyoming Ignition Interlock Device Questions

The state of Wyoming will issue an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) for most people convicted of alcohol-related offenses. You will be notified by mail from the Wyoming Department of Transportation (DOT) if you are required to install an IID. Typically, if this is your first DUI, you will need an IID for six months if you had a Breath Alcohol Content (BAC) of .15 or greater, but this decision is ultimately determined by the DOT. The DOT states that an IID Restricted License will not be issued to anyone who is not eligible by state statute, or to anyone holding a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). If you have a CDL, you can downgrade to a non-CDL class license. (See #7 for multiple DUI offenses.)

Once you have scheduled your Ignition Interlock Device (IID)  installation with Smart Start of Wyoming, you will need to bring the following to your IID installation appointment:

  • Cash or debit/credit card payment for your installation and the first month’s lease
  • Photo identification
  • Vehicle registration (or, if you are installing on someone else’s vehicle, a letter of permission from the registered owner stating that you have permission to install an IID on the vehicle)

Smart Start of Wyoming will provide you with proof of installation, which you will need to send to your State authority so that you receive credit for your time with your Ignition Interlock Device (IID).  You will also need to send to the State authority your Ignition Interlock Lease Agreement, your receipt for service, and the Installation Certificate, which will be signed by you and the technician who installed your Smart Start IID.

Smart Start’s Ignition Interlock Devices (IID’s) are compliant with all state and federal requirements. In addition, our devices are tested and certified to meet the standards set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), so you can be assured that Smart Start’s IID’s are compliant with your Wyoming program.

If you violate during your time with the Ignition Interlock Device (IID) in Wyoming, you will be required to return to a Smart Start service center location for calibration and service within 120 hours of your violation or service lockout start time.  You will incur an additional charge for this violation, and you may also be subject to a revocation of your driver’s license.

The state of Wyoming requires that you service your Ignition Interlock Device (IID) once every 30 to 60 days. Your State authority can specify when you need your IID serviced.

First DUI – At a Breath Alcohol Content (BAC) level of .15 or greater, you will be required to install an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) for six months. You may spend up to six months in jail, up to $750 in state fees and 90 days with a suspended license.

Second DUI – One year with an IID. You may spend between a week to six months in jail, $250 to $750 in state fees and a year with a suspended license.

Third DUI – Two years with an IID. You can spend anywhere between one to six months in jail, $750 to $3,000 in fees and up to three years with a suspended license.

Fourth DUI or subsequent – You will need an IID permanently, with an option to appeal to the court after five years.

In order to remove your Ignition Interlock Device (IID) at a Smart Start service center in Wyoming, you will need to verify with the Wyoming Department of Transportation (DOT) that you are authorized to have your ignition interlock restriction removed from your driver’s license.  Once you have verified that you are eligible, you must have this restriction removed prior to having your IID removed by an authorized Smart Start service center.

If you are required to have an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) to maintain your driving privileges in Wyoming, you must have an IID installed on any vehicle you will be driving—even if it’s borrowed.  Without meeting this requirement, you may be arrested and convicted of two separate charges:  1) driving on a suspended license, and 2) driving without an IID.
