We know that navigating a DWI can be overwhelming. Understanding the requirements and process after an alcohol related driving offense in New Mexico is an important step to getting back on the road. We’ve put together some general information to help you get started.
Under New Mexico law, a driver who gets a DWI charge is subject to both a civil and a criminal process. Penalties often include (but may not be limited to):
- License revocation for six months or more
- Financial penalties of up to $500 for a first offense
- Substance abuse assessment and education
- 48 hours or more of jail time
- Six months or more of required Ignition Interlock installation
Penalties increase if the driver has one or more previous DWI charges. Fines can be up to $10,000 for drivers with repeated DWIs.
The Ignition Interlock is an especially important requirement because it allows you to maintain some driving privileges while your license is suspended, and it’s often required as a condition of getting your license reinstated.
