When Will I Need an Ignition Interlock Device in Massachusetts?
Do you know if you’ll need an Ignition Interlock Device in Massachusetts after an OUI? An Ignition Interlock Device or IID may be a requirement if you have repeat OUI charges. Let’s go over in more detail when an IID is required and how long you’ll need the device to reinstate your driving privileges.
Ignition Interlock Device Law in Massachusetts
First, you should know at what point you’ll need to install an Interlock Device. Under Melanie’s Law, an IID is a requirement for drivers under two situations. Either it’s a requirement with a conditional hardship license or for those whose driver’s licenses are eligible for reinstatement following completion of their OUI license suspension or revocation periods.
The conditional hardship license restricts your driving privileges. It allows you to drive for a set, 12-hour period by the RMV, or the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.
Now let’s specify how you obtain an IID, because you must have the RMV’s approval before installing one!
The Process of Getting an IID in Massachusetts
1. You’ll need to visit an RMV service center and speak with an RMV hearings officer. They will explain the IID program to you whether for a conditional hardship license or for full reinstatement.
2. At the RMV, you’ll receive and need to sign legal documents related to your IID. The hearings officer will also show you a list of state-approved Ignition Interlock providers such as Smart Start. It’s important to do some research on each provider to find the right one for you! Smart Start provides many convenient locations, affordable pricing, a friendly service team and no hidden fees.
3. Once this paperwork is complete and returned to the officer, an “HZ” (conditional license) or a “Z” (license suspension/revocation) license restriction will be added to your driver’s license. They also be referred to as “HT” and “T” licenses.
4. Now you will need to schedule an IID installation appointment. Make sure you do NOT DRIVE to the Ignition Interlock service center! Remember that your license restriction means that you can only drive a vehicle with an IID installed. Ask someone to drive you to the shop for your installation service.
You can also read through this process of obtaining an IID through the RMV’s website.
How Long Will I Need an IID in Massachusetts?
In Massachusetts, the minimum IID restriction period lasts two years. However, for those issued a conditional hardship license, the IID is a requirement for the length of your suspension/revocation period plus two years after reinstatement of your full driving privileges.
