Starting Your Smart Start Washington Ignition Interlock Program

The first step you need to take is to schedule your Ignition Interlock installation appointment. Smart Start makes this extremely easy by giving you three options. You can call our friendly Customer Care Center at (800) 831-3299, fill out our online form or chat with us once you reach our Get a Quote page and provide your information.

Once you’ve scheduled your installation appointment at your nearest Smart Start service center, make sure you have the following items with you when you arrive.

• Proof of vehicle registration
  • If you need to install the Interlock Device in someone else’s vehicle, provide the Non-Owned Vehicle Installation Approval form. (The form is also available in Spanish.)
• Driver’s license
• Another form of ID
• Address verification

Our knowledgeable technicians at the service center will install your Ignition Interlock carefully while you fill out some paperwork and watch our training video. They will also show you how to use our simple-to-use Ignition Interlock until you are comfortable with the tests. Finally, we will send your proof of installation to the Washington Department of Licensing (DOL) on your behalf so you can apply for your Ignition Interlock Driver’s License (IIL) (if applicable.)

During Your Smart Start Washington Ignition Interlock Program

In Washington, Ignition Interlock clients need to visit their service center every 30 to 60 days for calibration during their program requirement period. The calibration appointments are important as they ensure your Ignition Interlock Device is working properly. Smart Start clients only have to wait a few minutes for our technicians to calibrate their devices before they are right back on the road in no time!

If you forget your calibration dates, you can check your next appointment date and time right from your device. Just press “#” and “1” together on your Ignition Interlock’s keypad.

You may also realize that you need to perform breath tests throughout your drive. These are called random running retests, which ensure that you are Separating Drinking From Driving®. In Washington, you have six minutes to pull over safely and take your random running retest before resuming your trip. We also recommend bringing a bottle of water with you to swish before each test while you have your Ignition Interlock Device.

The End of Your Smart Start Washington Ignition Interlock Program

Once you approach the end of your requirement period, Smart Start will send a Certificate of Compliance to the DOL. You’ll need to request the certificate, so make sure you know when you are nearing the end of your requirement period. The certificate will be submitted if none of the following occurred in the last four months or 180 days of your program:

• Attempting to start your vehicle with a breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) of .04 or higher
• Failure to take or pass any required running retest
• Missing scheduled maintenance for your Ignition Interlock such as calibrations, repairs, monitoring, inspection or replacing the device
