Can I Travel out of State with an Interlock Device?
Are you on an Interlock Device program but need to travel out of state?
Can I travel out of state with an Interlock Device?
Although Smart Start does not regulate your case requirements (your court or state DMV does), we can assist you in providing the information you need to travel out of state with your IID.
Traveling out of state while having an Interlock is on a case-by-case basis, so it is a good idea to ask and confirm with your State Authority. You can also ask our customer care team when you call Smart Start. Some courts and/or DMV’s do not allow you to travel out of state while you are on an Interlock Device program. You’ll also need to make sure the state you are traveling to will recognize your restricted license.
Important tips
If you can travel out of state, make sure that you will not miss any scheduled calibration appointments at your Smart Start service center. If you have your vehicle and are out of town, you may be able to reschedule your appointment at a Smart Start location in that state. Make sure to reschedule your appointment ahead of time before you leave, if you have the option to.
Calibration appointments should be scheduled either every 30 or 60 days, depending on which state you live in. These appointments are mandatory so our licensed technicians can ‘refresh’ your Device. These appointments also ensure the Device is still operating properly for you.
If you go ahead and travel with an Interlock without consulting your State Authority, more consequences could occur for you! It is much better to be safe than sorry, and ask before making any travel plans out of state.
