Can I Switch from an Interlock to a Portable Device, or Vice Versa?

If you are ordered to use an alcohol monitoring device, one question that may come to mind is if you can switch between an Interlock or portable unit.

Smart Start Devices

Currently, we have two Interlock Devices, the SSI-20/30™ and SSI-20/20™. We also provide clients our SMART Mobile when they are court-ordered to use a portable alcohol monitoring device. All Smart Start products use fuel cell technology, which is the most accurate, high-grade form of breath alcohol detection.

Can I switch between a portable device and an Interlock?

The answer is not a simple yes or no, but depends on your conditions and requirements. Some states, counties or State Authorities are very specific regarding which device you need to use.

For example, if you are ordered to have an Interlock for one year per your state’s DMV, they will insist you follow this requirement. Sometimes a portable device is ordered by a State Authority because they want testing throughout the day, every day.

Some conditions may even require you to use a portable device and an Interlock.
