NEWS: Iowa Will Require Cameras with Ignition Interlock Law
Iowa could be making some big changes to their Ignition Interlock rules and regulations. Not only is the Hawkeye State adding cameras alongside Ignition Interlocks when required, which is tentatively taking effect January 2019, but they are also casting a wider net to include Ignition Interlocks for all OWI cases with a .08 BAC or higher.
The Iowa Ignition Interlock and Camera Law
Adding on the camera for individuals who need an Ignition Interlock will ensure it is them taking the test and no one else. All state-approved Ignition Interlock providers will have a camera for those who need the device to reinstate their driving privileges.
Smart Start’s camera is a small, discreet and cube-like shape that easily attaches to the vehicle’s window. The camera will snap a photo every time the user takes a breath test. With these photos, the user can prove it was them taking the Ignition Interlock test, and no one else.
Many states (more than 20) require Ignition Interlocks to include a camera, and has proven effective in reducing attempted bypasses or circumvention of the device.
Smart Start applauds Iowa for taking the legislative steps forward to provide residents safer roadways and save lives. If you need to use an Ignition Interlock in Iowa, cameras will be a benefit to you during your program. Read more about how cameras work here on the Smart Start blog.
