Do you know what SR-22 insurance, or FR-44 insurance, is, or when you’ll need it?
Most drivers who get a DUI or DWI will end up having their auto insurance, and possibly other insurance, impacted. If they want to drive, they will likely be required to have insurance, and that means they will have to get “high-risk” insurance for coverage. Their current insurance providers may not offer that type of “high-risk” insurance, which means they will have to find another provider.
In addition, their state or jurisdiction may require proof of that insurance coverage, which is known as an SR-22, or FR-44 document or certificate.
What is SR-22 Insurance or FR-44 Insurance?
A DUI conviction or other violations resulting in driving privileges being suspended or revoked may mean you need to obtain high-risk insurance, or a Certificate of Financial Responsibility. The SR-22 verifies you have vehicle insurance coverage. If you have an insurance provider, they will need to provide you with the proper documentation. If your insurance provider cannot offer this service, you’ll need to find another provider.
An FR-44 has the same meaning as an SR-22, just with a different name. The term depends on where you live in the U.S., as FR-44 insurance is required in Florida and Virginia.
If you do not own a vehicle, some states may have a non-owner SR-22 policy requirement.

How Do I Know If I Need SR-22 Insurance?
Your court, judge or state office, depending on where you live, will notify you if you are required to have an SR-22. Requirements for SR-22 proof vary by state. The amount of time you’ll need SR-22 insurance also varies by state, but on average it can be up to three years or more.
You can contact your local insurance agent or provider specializing in SR-22 fulfillment to gather more information about the process in your state. If the SR-22 insurance is court-ordered, you’ll be notified by your judge or other State Authority to get one. If you are state-ordered, you will most likely receive a notice of the requirement from your state office, such as the DMV.

Will Vaping Cause a Violation on My Ignition Interlock?
Would activities like vaping, or using e-cigarettes, cause a violation on an Ignition Interlock?
An Ignition Interlock Device can be a requirement if someone is convicted or arrested because of a DUI. If installed, the user will provide a breath sample for the Ignition Interlock to measure their breath alcohol concentration before they can start their vehicle.
Vaping and Ignition Interlocks
Ignition Interlocks have a fuel-cell sensor, which measures your breath alcohol concentration, or BrAC. In other words, an Ignition Interlock’s purpose is to only detect alcohol consumption. The smoke that comes from vaping has no influence whatsoever. It is a good idea, however, to swish your mouth with water before any test so you are clearing out any particles left over, such as the aftereffects of mouthwash or the smoke from vaping.
Do not blow smoke into the Ignition Interlock! Exhaling smoke into your Ignition Interlock can cause damage and will deter you from completing a breath test.
Alcohol Vaping
Vaping alcohol is more dangerous than drinking it since the alcohol goes straight to a person’s lungs without metabolizing first in the stomach and liver. If you do vape alcohol, your Ignition Interlock will detect that amount that you consume. No matter how you digest it, Ignition Interlocks have reliable technology that will read your alcohol consumption. If your BrAC reading is above the fail set point, your vehicle will not start.
Do you have any questions about your Ignition Interlock program? Smart Start’s Customer Care Center is 24/7/365, which means we’re available to help at any time, even during weekends and holidays. How Often Should I Change Out My Ignition Interlock Mouthpiece?
An Ignition Interlock mouthpiece is the plastic part shaped like a cylinder that fits at the top of your Ignition Interlock Device. It must be inserted into the device so you can provide a breath sample.
Smart Start’s mouthpieces are sanitary and simple to use when you provide breath samples on your Ignition Interlock. However, you will want to change out your mouthpiece on a consistent basis throughout your program to maintain its functionality and cleanliness.
How Often You Should Change Out Your Ignition Interlock Mouthpiece
We recommend changing out your Ignition Interlock mouthpiece after every calibration or service appointment, which is every 30 or 60 days, depending on where you live. Keep a few extra mouthpieces in your glove box so you can easily replace it.
At your Ignition Interlock installation appointment, you will receive a few mouthpieces from the service technician. After your appointment, you’ll be back on the road in no time!
How Do I Get More Ignition Interlock Mouthpieces?
At Smart Start, it’s easy to receive more mouthpieces. At your next calibration appointment, ask our friendly service technician for more Ignition Interlock mouthpieces. We will provide as many as you need so you can easily switch out your mouthpieces during your Ignition Interlock program.
If you need more before your service appointment, feel free to call our Customer Care Center at (800) 831-3299. Our agents will assist you, and will answer any other questions you have related to your Ignition Interlock program.

License Suspension Versus Getting an Ignition Interlock: Which is Better?
When a DUI conviction or arrest is made, there are multiple situations that can happen. Although there are many license and/or court requirements that vary by state or even county, common scenarios include but are not limited to these situations.
One option won’t allow you to drive at all. The other two will. Since requirements vary, check with your attorney, court, and/or DMV office to determine which options are available to you.
License Suspensions Versus Ignition Interlocks
Ignition Interlocks are devices that prevent the driver from starting their vehicle if their BrAC level is too high. In all states, there is some type of court or state-mandated requirement for Ignition Interlocks due to a DUI conviction or arrest. Currently, 32 states and D.C. implement an all-offender law, which studies show is the most effective Ignition Interlock law.
An Ignition Interlock is a physical tool that stops drunk driving. There is nothing stopping an intoxicated individual from starting their car and driving on a suspended or restricted driver’s license. In fact, 50 to 75 percent of convicted drunk drivers continue to drive on a suspended license in the U.S.
In Pennsylvania, an individual could have their license suspended for a year. This isn’t an ideal situation for someone who needs to drive to work or school. Ignition Interlocks allow offenders to contribute to society again but physically stops them from driving drunk.
All-offender Ignition Interlock laws can reduce drunk driving deaths by 15 percent nationwide, which is a big change for a nation where drunk driving fatalities rose for the second year in a row. And there is a 67 percent reduction in recidivism, or re-arrests, for offenders who use Ignition Interlocks.
It’s clear that Ignition Interlocks are the answer to safer roadways, and are a fitting requirement for DUI offenders during any license revocation or suspension period. If Ignition Interlocks are the only option after a drunk driving offense, everyone experiences a safer environment while individuals can still lead meaningful lives with the ability to drive again safely.
