When Will I Need an Ignition Interlock in Iowa?
If you are convicted of an OWI and your driver’s license is revoked, you may need an Ignition Interlock in Iowa. Recently, Iowa passed an all-offender Ignition Interlock law, which includes first-time OWI cases who had a BAC of .08 or higher.
Iowa’s law used to state that first-time OWI offenses with a .10 BAC or higher must install an Ignition Interlock. In any case, for first-time offenses, your license revocation will last six months, but you can apply right away for a temporary restricted license, or TRL, which will allow you limited driving privileges if you install an Ignition Interlock.
When Can I Apply for a Temporary Restricted License?
The temporary restricted license will allow you to drive to and from work, doctors’ appointments, court appearances, counseling services or transporting a dependent to school or another caregiver. If you choose to not get a TRL, you will still need to install an Ignition Interlock but you’ll have to wait a year until installation on a suspended license.
How Do I Obtain the Temporary Restricted License Application?
You can find the Application for a Temporary Restricted License on the Iowa DOT site. When you are on the site, right-click, ‘430100.pdf’ and click ‘save link as…’ to download the form. Then, open the form from your Adobe Reader on your computer. If you are having trouble obtaining the form, you can call the Iowa DOT at 1-800-532-1121 or 515-244-8725.
How Long Will I Need an Ignition Interlock in Iowa?
The average time you’ll need an Ignition Interlock is six months for a first-time OWI and a year for second OWI cases, but this can vary.
Have any questions? Iowa has an option for drivers to view their reinstatement requirements online if their driver’s license is suspended or revoked. If you have any questions related to your Ignition Interlock program, you can call Smart Start at (800) 831-3299, and our 24/7/365 Customer Care Center will assist you.

How Long Do I Need an SR-22 in Colorado?
If you are convicted of a DUI, you need to file for an SR-22 in Colorado because of your license suspension and/or revocation. But what exactly is an SR-22, and how long will you need to maintain it?
The SR-22 Process in Colorado
An SR-22 in Colorado is proof that you have the minimum liability insurance coverage for the state. Filing for an SR-22 is a requirement that is a part of your license reinstatement process from specific suspensions or revocations. On average, you will need an SR-22 in Colorado for three years, but it could be up to five years.
You can file for an SR-22 with your current auto insurance company. If they do not offer the SR-22, you must search for another auto insurance provider to maintain your Colorado reinstatement requirements. In either case, your insurance company will provide a form for you to fill out. Once completed, you can mail in the form to the Colorado Department of Revenue (DOR). Their mailing address will be on the Application for Reinstatement.
Make sure you maintain your SR-22! If it is no longer in effect, your insurance company must notify the DMV, and this could mean your driver’s license will be suspended longer.
Have any questions? Your insurance company can assist you with next steps regarding your SR-22. If you must use an Ignition Interlock when completing your reinstatement requirements, Smart Start can help. Call our friendly Customer Care Center at (800) 831-3299, and we will get you back on the road.

When Will I Need an Ignition Interlock in Hawaii?
If you have been convicted of a DUI or an OVUII, you may need an Ignition Interlock in Hawaii. Here’s the various situations that will require you to install an Ignition Interlock, or IID.
When an IID in Hawaii is Required, and the Ignition Interlock Permit
If your license is revoked for an OVUII (Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant) and you want to be able to drive during the revocation period, then you need to install a state-approved IID, such as Smart Start.
Once you have an IID installed, you can apply for an Ignition Interlock Permit(IIP). The IIP allows you to drive your vehicle with the Ignition Interlock during the revocation period specified in the IIP. Keep in mind that you cannot be issued an IIP under certain conditions, such as having an expired, suspended or revoked driver’s license or being under 18-years-old. Your IIP application lists in detail the specific conditions that exempt you from applying for an IIP.
The IIP may be issued for the duration of your revocation period, or until your license expiration date, whichever comes first. If your driver’s license expires during the revocation period, you may apply for an amended IIP after obtaining proof from the DMV (Driver’s Licensing) that your driver’s license expiration date has been extended for IIP purposes.
More information can be found via the ADLRO, or Administrative Driver’s License Revocation Office webpage, or through your attorney.

TIPS FROM YOUR TECH SERIES: Don’t Leave Your Vehicle Running with an Ignition Interlock
Do you have an Ignition Interlock because of a DUI or DWI? Your Ignition Interlock is connected to your vehicle and works alongside it when it is installed. But it’s important to not leave your vehicle running with your Ignition Interlock unattended.
Don’t Leave Your Vehicle Running with an Ignition Interlock
There are times where you may take your initial Ignition Interlock test to start the vehicle. You then go back inside the house for a minute because you might have forgotten something. Or it’s colder weather and you want your vehicle to warm up before driving to work.
But your Ignition Interlock is then prompting for a rolling re-test and you’re not in the vehicle. A few minutes pass, and the test window for that rolling re-test has expired. A rolling re-test countdown can vary by state, but the average length is up to six minutes.
Your Ignition Interlock will register this as a skipped rolling re-test, which can be considered a violation of your DUI requirements. This means your revocation period can be reinstated or other consequences.
It’s very important to remember not to leave your vehicle unattended while it is on with an Ignition Interlock installed during your court or state-ordered program! You’ll save yourself a lot of headache and stress in the long run by staying alert with your Ignition Interlock. You should also make sure to check your device for rolling re-test prompts before exiting your vehicle. These missed tests could cause violations, and we’d hate for that to happen!
Hang in there, and remember that Smart Start is here for you during every step of your Ignition Interlock program, from installation to removal. Call our 24/7/365 Customer Care Center at (800) 831-3299 and a friendly customer service agent will help you.

When Will I Need an Ignition Interlock in Georgia?
Updated: May 2018
As of July 2017, Georgia law states that if you’re charged with a DUI and you are a first-time offender, you may opt to install an Ignition Interlock for any vehicle you operate in Georgia to maintain your driving privileges under an Ignition Interlock Device Limited Permit (IIDLP). Additionally, there is an Ignition Interlock Device requirement if it is your second or subsequent DUI offense in five years.
Ignition Interlock Device Limited Permit
Georgia law allows those charged with a first-time DUI to notify the Georgia Department of Drivers Services (DDS) within 30 days if they wish to opt in for the Ignition Interlock and waive their right to an administrative hearing to maintain their driving privileges while the judicial process continues. Individuals interested in this option to utilize a DDS-Interlock approved vendor can have the Ignition Interlock installed, and then report to DDS that the device is installed. The IIDLP will then be issued by DDS.
This permit is not available for individuals whose DUI events caused fatalities or serious injuries. Anyone who applies for the permit must also be licensed in Georgia.
In July 2018, Senate Bill 407 will go into effect allowing accountability courts and non-accountability courts to order Ignition Interlock Limited Drivers Permits outside of DUI offenses.
How Long Will I Need an Ignition Interlock in Georgia?
For first-time offenders, if you refused the field sobriety test breath sample, you will need an Ignition Interlock for 12 months. If you agreed to submit to a field sobriety test breath sample, you will need an Ignition Interlock for 4 months. The requirement period for an Ignition Interlock can be more based on a judge’s discretion.
For second offense DUI’s within five years, the Ignition Interlock is required for 14 months. The individual must serve a 120-day hard suspension first.
Have any questions about your Ignition Interlock requirements in Georgia? Smart Start can help. With an Ignition Interlock, you can get back on the road and drive again, getting back to your everyday routine.
