Do You Have a Designated, Sober Driver for Summer Events?
The summer months are a crucial time to designate some rules for certain events. Especially when there will be a mix of family and alcohol during these parties and functions.
One rule is to ensure there is a sober driver behind the wheel of the car your kids are riding in. Whether it’s a pool party or day camp, if you have a babysitter or family member driving, make sure your child is safe during the ride home.
Statistics
According to MADD, “over half of all children killed in drunk driving crashes are killed while riding with the drunk driver. Most of the time, that person is old enough to be a parent or caregiver.”
MADD also lists that 43 states and the District of Columbia have laws enhancing penalties for those who drive drunk with a child passenger in a vehicle. These penalties can include jail time, fees and/or the installation of an Interlock Device.
All states’ regulations vary however. In New York, it is a felony to drive drunk with a child passenger under the age of 16. But in Wisconsin, this same offense is a misdemeanor.
