Act 1221 (Ignition Interlock Law) in Arkansas Requires DWI Offenders to Get an Ignition Interlock Starting July 22, 2015

July 8, 2015

Thanks to new legislation passed April 8, 2015, the roads of Arkansas are about to become much safer for drivers and passengers alike.

Beginning July 22, the ignition interlock law that began as Senate Bill 877 will go into effect, requiring all DWI offenders to acquire an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) in order to drive during their license suspension.  Previously, someone convicted of a DWI in Arkansas had the option of having an ignition interlock installed or waiting out a license suspension.  But, as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) explains, “many repeat offenders are caught driving without ignition interlock and driving on a suspended license,” putting themselves and other people on the road at risk*.  SB 877—now Act 1221—removes the option, making the acquisition of an ignition interlock mandatory following a DWI conviction in the state of Arkansas.

At Smart Start, we understand that DWI offenders rarely make this mistake intentionally.  However, we also understand that, sometimes, mistakes happen.  Our goal is to help everyone make Arkansas roads safer.  And, because the U.S. Center for Disease Control asserts that Ignition Interlock Devices have been proven to reduce repeat drunk driving offenses by 67%—much more than license suspensions—we believe that this ignition interlock law is a great step forward for the great Natural State.

You might be wondering: what is an Ignition Interlock Device?  Sometimes mistakenly referred to as a “car breathalyzer,” an Ignition Interlock Device—like Smart Start’s SSI-20/20™ or SSI-20/30™—is a means of not only testing blood alcohol content (BAC) levels, but ensuring that drivers who are intoxicated cannot operate their vehicles.  An Ignition Interlock Device is a testing unit affixed to cars, trucks, and crossover vehicles to prevent drivers with a higher BAC from driving.  Smart Start believes that, by separating drinking from driving, we can make the roads safer for Arkansans everywhere.SSI_2030_Interlock_device
