7 BAIID Steps to Follow After Graduating a Michigan Treatment Court
If you are a participant in a Michigan treatment court, you may need to continue using your Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device or BAIID after graduation. In other words, your overseeing authority for your BAIID program can change from a court requirement to the state’s. This means your BAIID provider will need to make a couple adjustments to your program, since the court and state’s BAIID requirements may differ.
Below is the BAIID process for you to follow once you graduate treatment or sobriety court, so you know exactly what to do to continue with your life and complete your requirements. Please keep in mind that this process is for drivers who have a court-approved, Ignition Interlock restricted driver’s license!
The 7-Step Process After Treatment Court Graduation for BAIID Users
- Graduate sobriety court
- Call your BAIID provider, such as Smart Start, at 888-234-0198 to update your BAIID program. We will change your account and provide you with next steps. Your monthly lease fee will be lower from the account changes!
- Your BAIID service appointments will now be bi-monthly. You’ll only need to visit your BAIID provider for your service appointments every other month. Keep in mind that you’ll need to pay for two months rather than one. If you do opt for a monthly service appointment, there will be an additional fee.
- Continue with your Smart Start BAIID program until your state requirements are complete. If you are unsure how long you need your BAIID, ask your license restoration attorney for advice.
- Request a license appeal hearing with the state. Make sure you have these documents handy:
- Your current substance abuse evaluation (dated no later than 3 months prior to submission)
- Three to six community support letters
- Evidence in the form of documents for your attendance at support meetings
- Your BAIID report or a receipt from your BAIID company showing you requested a report
Not all of these may apply to your case since each one differs. If you call the Administrative Hearing Section of the SOS at 888-767-6424, they will send a packet with all the remaining requirements you need to complete prior to scheduling your hearing date. More information can be found on the state of Michigan’s website.
- Receive BAIID removal authorization from the state in the mail. Do not request a removal appointment prior to your removal authorization! You may put your driving reinstatement and license status at risk.
- Call your Michigan BAIID provider such as Smart Start to schedule your device removal at 888-234-0198. We’ll take it from there, and you’ll be on your way to completing your program!
