Is My Ignition Interlock Certified and Reliable?
Have you ever wondered if Ignition Interlock Device companies are properly certified? It turns out that becoming certified in states with Ignition Interlock Device laws and service is no easy feat. That’s why when you are installing an Interlock with a state-certified company such as Smart Start, you are partnering with a manufacturer that’s providing you a reliable program.
But what exactly does it mean to have an Interlock certification in your state?
Interlock Certifications Explained
There are several milestones that an Interlock Device manufacturer must achieve to obtain certification. Each state also has their own certification standards and regulations. Here are just a few.
Complying with the State’s Interlock Standards
The Interlock Device manufacturer and its employees must demonstrate many aspects required by the state to ensure the manufacturer is complying with its certification requirements. This could mean inspection of the service location or the manufacturer’s Interlock services in general such as installation, repair, removal or overall performance of the Interlock Device.
Interlock manufacturers must also comply with the technology and service standards that states mandate to perform Interlock Device services. For example, if states require cameras to accompany the Ignition Interlock Device, manufacturers must comply with this to continue performing their services to clients. In fact, Smart Start is one out of a few Interlock manufacturers that exceed the state’s Interlock standards in order to provide the most seamless experience possible for clients!
States may also require Interlock manufacturers to provide state-wide service in all their counties, which means easily accessible service or mobile locations for you wherever you live or work in the state.
An Interlock Device certification can last several years, and it is up to the Interlock manufacturer to maintain their compliance to keep their certification valid. If rules and regulations were to change, the Interlock manufacturers must accommodate and change their programs, technology and services accordingly to continue complying with the state law Interlock standards.
Some states may also require Interlock manufacturers to have proper accreditation with their labs for testing standards. In other words, their Interlock Devices need to meet or exceed the federal Interlock model specifications of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) guidelines, International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 17025 and/or ISO 9001, and other state standards.
