Can I use a personal breath tester (PBT) if I have an Ignition Interlock?
A fair question that may come to mind is if you can use a PBT (personal breath tester) device while on an Ignition Interlock program. Some states prohibit clients on Interlock programs from buying PBT’s! Check with your State Authority before you buy one!
PBT’s Versus Interlocks
First, let’s explain the difference between a PBT and an Ignition Interlock.
A personal breath tester (PBT) is a portable device that can test someone’s breath alcohol level. They are usually handheld and can be taken anywhere. An individual could buy one to test their breath alcohol concentration level (BrAC).
Ignition Interlocks are usually a mandatory device that someone charged with a DUI/DWI must use in their vehicle. Interlocks separate drinking from driving, but allow individuals to get back on the road again safely. They are also a NHTSA-certified product with robust, fuel cell technology. The vehicle will not start if someone blows over the Interlock’s fail level. You can, however, lease an Interlock voluntarily, too.
Can I Use a PBT During My Interlock Program?
Interlock program regulations are state-by-state, so it is up to the person monitoring you to make the decision on whether you can use a PBT or not. For example, some jurisdictions are OK with the use of a PBT, but others prohibit this during your program.
Make sure you ask your State Authority if you are thinking about buying a PBT! If you violate your program, even without knowing, you could receive more severe consequences.
