The Walk Like MADD event in Denver was Saturday, August 5 at Sloan’s Lake Park.

In the state, local news outlets report that Colorado’s traffic fatalities increased 11 percent in 2016. Denver had the highest number of fatalities in the state as the largest city. The main cause appears to be the slack use of seatbelts rather than impaired driving.

The lesser amount of drunk driving fatalities may correlate with Colorado’s all-offender Ignition Interlock law. Since 2009, when Colorado’s all-offender law took effect, an Interlock has stopped a drunk driving start 92,503 times. This data from MADD represents drivers with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or more, and was between 2009 and 2015.

MADD stands for Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the largest non-profit organization in the U.S. and Canada whose goal is to end drunk driving and save lives.

MADD also heavily endorses Ignition Interlocks as a safety tool against impaired driving. They work to encourage states to enact all-offender Ignition Interlock laws, which is proven to reduce recidivism in repeat offenders, and drunk driving overall.
