License Suspension Versus Getting an Ignition Interlock: Which is Better?
When a DUI conviction or arrest is made, there are multiple situations that can happen. Although there are many license and/or court requirements that vary by state or even county, common scenarios include but are not limited to these situations.
- Your license is suspended and you must install an Ignition Interlock to legally drive during that suspension period
- You avoid license suspension by installing an Ignition Interlock for a certain period
- You choose to wait out your suspension without installing an Ignition Interlock
One option won’t allow you to drive at all. The other two will. Since requirements vary, check with your attorney, court, and/or DMV office to determine which options are available to you.
License Suspensions Versus Ignition Interlocks
Ignition Interlocks are devices that prevent the driver from starting their vehicle if their BrAC level is too high. In all states, there is some type of court or state-mandated requirement for Ignition Interlocks due to a DUI conviction or arrest. Currently, 32 states and D.C. implement an all-offender law, which studies show is the most effective Ignition Interlock law.
An Ignition Interlock is a physical tool that stops drunk driving. There is nothing stopping an intoxicated individual from starting their car and driving on a suspended or restricted driver’s license. In fact, 50 to 75 percent of convicted drunk drivers continue to drive on a suspended license in the U.S.
In Pennsylvania, an individual could have their license suspended for a year. This isn’t an ideal situation for someone who needs to drive to work or school. Ignition Interlocks allow offenders to contribute to society again but physically stops them from driving drunk.
All-offender Ignition Interlock laws can reduce drunk driving deaths by 15 percent nationwide, which is a big change for a nation where drunk driving fatalities rose for the second year in a row. And there is a 67 percent reduction in recidivism, or re-arrests, for offenders who use Ignition Interlocks.
It’s clear that Ignition Interlocks are the answer to safer roadways, and are a fitting requirement for DUI offenders during any license revocation or suspension period. If Ignition Interlocks are the only option after a drunk driving offense, everyone experiences a safer environment while individuals can still lead meaningful lives with the ability to drive again safely.
