It’s The End of Summer: Are Drunk Driving Crashes Decreasing?
The summer holidays, such as 4th of July and Labor Day, are one of the most dangerous times to drive because of drunk driving.
Why? Because there are more people on the roads visiting family or friends. In addition, the festive spirit during the holidays can create an unfortunate choice of someone drinking and driving.
Summer may be the season where we see more drunk drivers are on the road, but it is still important to remain vigilant year-round as we head into fall and winter.
Impaired Driving Statistics
There’s still an unfortunately high number year-round for drunk driving in the U.S. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “…on average, over 10,000 people have died each year (2010 to 2014) in drunk driving crashes.” This represents about a third of driving-related deaths.
In fact, in 2012, Thanksgiving had the highest number of car crash fatalities at 764. Drunk driving accounted for 40 percent of those crashes. That is a staggering number, especially when deaths caused by impaired driving are completely preventable.
Alcohol Monitoring Should Be a Focus Year-Round
Although the sun is setting on the summer months, there should still be a strong emphasis on the continued importance of alcohol monitoring. The tools available, such as Ignition Interlocks, remain an accurate and easy way to detect drunken driving. An Ignition Interlock is a device that requires the driver to prove his or her sobriety before operating their vehicle.
Why Ignition Interlock Devices Are Important
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that, “Ignition Interlocks reduce repeat offenses for driving while intoxicated (DWI) individuals by about 70 percent while they are installed.” In other words, Ignition Interlocks work to prevent a great number of the deaths that may be caused by impaired driving.
Ignition Interlock Devices are proven to reduce drunk driving in the U.S. Through Ignition Interlock technology, State Authorities can help modify the alcohol consumption of DUI offenders, reduce the risk of recidivism, and ultimately eliminate drunk driving as a concern.
