(RECAP) Emerging Technology Affects Road Safety Worldwide – CARSP Conference

Will advanced detection systems in cars, such as blind spot monitoring, create an immediate change in roadway safety? Are navigation systems and entertainment systems built into vehicles distracting for drivers? And how much of an impact will autonomous, or self-driving cars, have on public roadways?

These questions and more were discussed by law enforcement, government officials and experts in road safety in Toronto, Ontario at the 2017 CARSP Conference.

The Canadian Association of Road Safety Professionals

Formed in 1985, CARSP stands for the Canadian Association of Road Safety Professionals. The organization’s goal is to share “knowledge among Canada’s road safety professionals with the goal of making roads safer.”

This year’s conference theme was “Technology and Road Safety,” with a focus on topics such as policy-making and program measures, enforcement/legal issues, and psychological discussions that include road user/behavioral studies conducted by researchers. The conference also highlighted emerging and current technology, like Safe System Approach, that impacts road safety.

Saving Lives on Roadways with Technology

Safe System Approach, pioneered in Sweden and the Netherlands, is an approach that is considered as the most effective way to “save lives and reduce serious injuries” on public roads. Conference attendees had the opportunity to participate in a discussion about how technology can be used to further the guiding principles of the Safe System Approach.

That focus can lead into a conversation about more widespread use of Interlock Devices: technology which has been shown in U.S. studies with all-offender Interlock programs to have a positive traffic safety impact alongside airbags.
