Is It Dangerous to Drive During Memorial Day Weekend?
Memorial Day should be a time to honor our country’s armed forces, not experience tragedy on our roads. In the U.S., Memorial Day and most other holidays see higher cases of drunk driving. This is because there is an increase in overall traveling for cookouts and other festive events. It’s clear that it’s more dangerous to drive during the holiday period, so extra precaution should be taken if you are traveling for Memorial Day weekend.
Memorial Day Roadway Death Statistics
The National Safety Council (NSC) estimates more than 400 roadway-related deaths will occur during the Memorial Day weekend, which is May 25th through the 28th this year. 2018 is the second year in a row where the NSC estimated that there will be more than 400 deaths. A fair percentage of those deaths are alcohol-related.
Let’s make Memorial Day a safe holiday weekend. If you are the host of your Memorial Day event, make sure all your guests get back home safe. Designate a sober driver, ride through Lyft or Uber, use public transportation and report any suspected drunk drivers.
Smart Start hopes you have a fun and safe Memorial Day weekend!
