Visiting a Smart Start service center after being ordered to install an Interlock can be daunting. But drivers, you need to get back on the road again with safety in mind, so you want to go through this process as efficiently as possible.
No worries. Smart Start is on the same page as you.
Below, you’ll find a brief outline of what to expect on your Interlock installation day at any Smart Start location nationwide.
But first … what exactly is an Ignition Interlock?
Ignition Interlocks are devices that test your BAC, or BrAC, level. You may have also heard Interlocks being referenced as car breathalyzers or alcohol breath testers. Keep in mind that some states use the term interlocks differently, such as Illinois with BAIID’s, or Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Devices. A curly cord connects to your Interlock at the bottom that leads into your ignition system, which means that your vehicle will start or not start dependent on your breath test results.
So, what do Interlocks look like? Smart Start’s Ignition Interlocks are handheld and discreet products that are the size of your smartphone. The mouthpiece allows you to blow into the device for your breath tests. You can get multiple mouthpieces for sanitary purposes from your technician, or the monitoring/overseeing authority of your program.
Now that you know a bit more about your Device…
Continue reading so you will know what to expect on your installation day.
BEFORE THE APPOINTMENT: Prep Yourself
Prepping before your Interlock appointment is perhaps the most important step for you, because, during the rest of the process, you will always have a friendly, qualified Smart Start team member helping you along the way. So, these steps are up to you: scheduling your appointment, what to bring to your appointment and making sure your schedule that day fits to accommodate your appointment.
Scheduling an Interlock appointment is very easy and fast. If you want to call, just dial 800.831.3299, and one of our knowledgeable, friendly customer service agents will help you set up an appointment at your nearest Smart Start center. You can also fill out our form or chat with us online! Smart Start boasts thousands of locations nationwide for your convenience.
Before your Interlock appointment, you will need to bring: a copy of your case paperwork, your proof of residence, your photo ID, and car insurance and vehicle registration papers. That’s it!
*Remember that all states have different requirements. For example, in some states, if you are not the owner of the vehicle you will be using during your program, you will need to bring a letter of permission from the registered owner stating that you can use an Interlock on the vehicle. Ask your monitoring or overseeing authority, or visit our state FAQs’ pages, to know what exactly to bring to your appointment!
Another great way to prep yourself is to find your nearest Smart Start location before calling to schedule. You can find out where the closest Smart Start is near your work or home here.
The usual waiting time for our team to install an Interlock can take an hour or two. Make sure when you are scheduling your appointment that you are blocking off a few hours that day. We do our best to get you back on the road quickly, but keep in mind that we are also being as careful as possible when installing the Interlock. We appreciate your patience during this time!

DURING THE APPOINTMENT: Watch and Learn
While you are at your Smart Start service center, the technician will aid you in the Interlock program by giving you a training video to watch while our team completes your Interlock installation. Take advantage of your wait time to ask our team any questions you may have. You can also look to our website online and review your state’s Interlock laws and FAQ’s.
During your appointment, you will also have to practice blowing into your Interlock as demonstrated by your Smart Start technician. All state regulations are different, but your technician will usually ask you to demonstrate that you can use your Interlock successfully two to three times. Always remember to rinse your mouth with water before taking any Interlock test! Some products and foods with alcohol in its properties can cause a false test – but false positive tests are a rare occurrence for a Smart Start Interlock, which is made through state-of-the-art fuel cell technology.
You may be wondering about your vehicle as it is in the auto repair bay. Only qualified and skilled technicians will ever be in contact with your vehicle during your appointment. Our team is certified in installing Interlocks. Rest assured that your vehicle will be all right during this process.
We want to help you get through your program as efficiently as possible with little-to-no trouble. Our 24/7 customer service team is ready to help you with any questions you may have, as well as our chat services coordinators through online chat throughout your Interlock program.
OK, it looks like you are off to a great start! You should now be equipped with the knowledge you need when coming in for a Smart Start Interlock install. The training videos and manuals we mentioned are also available for you at any time online.
Check back in with us at the blog as well! We provide you with up-to-date resources and tips during your Interlock program weekly.
PLEASE NOTE! Each state will differ in their Interlock requirements, meaning the steps outlined above may be slightly different for your program. It is always best to stay informed. Ask your monitoring or overseeing authority any questions so you do not violate any part of your Interlock program.
Schedule your Interlock installation today so you can get back on the road safely and legally with Smart Start! Reach out to our 24/7 customer service team at 800.831.3299, fill out our online form or speak with a chat services coordinator via our website.
Do I Have to Take a Random Retest on my Ignition Interlock Device While I’m Driving?
Now that you have an Ignition Interlock Device, you should be comfortable with how it works. However, after taking your initial test to start your vehicle, your Interlock Device will prompt for a random rolling retest, and allow adequate time for you to move your vehicle to a safe area and complete the test.
What Are Random Rolling Retests?
Actually, a “random rolling retest” isn’t the right term. You shouldn’t be rolling at all, because it can put you in danger.
It’s very important that you:
Rolling retests happen a few minutes after you start driving your vehicle. The Interlock Device will prompt you by making a sound and displaying the word BLOW on its screen. The screen will also show your time remaining to perform the test.
Rolling retests are very helpful to you during your program. These tests confirm that you are complying with your court or state-administered Interlock Device requirements while you are driving. Initial tests will allow your vehicle to start, but the random retests that happen during your drive validate your sobriety while on the road.
Rolling retests are under the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)’s Ignition Interlock model specifications. The organization states that, ‘‘NHTSA does not intend that retests be conducted while the vehicle is moving, but rather while the engine is running with the vehicle stopped in a safe location on the side of the road.’’ (75 Fed. Reg. 61824.) Rolling retests are also included in the Association of Ignition Interlock Program Administrators (AIIPA) and American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) best practices recommendations for Ignition Interlock Devices.
Your Engine Will Never Stop During a Random Retest
Nothing is more important than the safety of our clients. Even if you fail the test, your vehicle will continue to run.
Smart Start hopes you continue to have a successful and seamless Interlock Device program. Remember, you can always call our bilingual, 24/7/365 customer care center for assistance.

One question that may come to mind before your appointment is the time it takes to install an Ignition Interlock Device. Rest assured, your appointment will not take all day. Usually, Smart Start’s qualified technicians only need a couple of hours.
Please keep in mind that some vehicles may take a little longer for our technicians to install the Device. We recommend blocking off at least two hours to make sure you are prepared to not miss any other appointments, or work.
Your Appointment – Installing an Interlock Device
While you are at your installation appointment, one of our technicians will provide hands-on training with the Interlock Device before you leave. Every state has a different breath test pattern per their Interlock Device regulations. Don’t worry, though! All Smart Start’s testing patterns are very easy, and will only take seconds to perform the test. Each state’s Interlock Device regulations are different, but most require you to demonstrate that you can use your Interlock at least two or three times before leaving the service center.
You will also need to watch a short training video about your Interlock Device, and what different messages could mean. You will also be given a training manual as a reference guide. If you do not have the training manual with you, it is always on our website, as well.

5 Ignition Interlock Device Tips for a Successful Program
When ordered to install an Interlock Device, using one can seem confusing and a little frightening. We can promise that testing with a Smart Start Interlock is very easy.
An Ignition Interlock Device (IID) measures your BrAC level before starting your vehicle. It also prompts for random breath tests throughout your drive time to determine your sobriety.
When you get the hang of using your Interlock Device, it only takes seconds to perform your test. And with the right information, your everyday routine will be back to normal.
Are you saying inaccurate information about Interlock Devices is out there?
YES!
Some sites write that Interlocks can shut down a car’s engine while on the road if you fail a breath test. Your Interlock Device will never shut down your vehicle’s engine while driving. This is a major safety hazard, and our Interlocks are NOT manufactured to do this to your vehicle.
There’s also some misconceptions about rolling retests. In most states, you have several minutes to provide your requested breath tests while driving. Don’t panic if you are in a lot of traffic! You will have plenty of time to find a safe location to provide a test.
Bottom line: Be aware of sites that are not reputable on Interlocks.
Below are Smart Start’s five Interlock Device tips for success. We hope you find them helpful as you get back on the road again!
1. Swish Your Mouth with Water Before Testing
Most Interlock Devices, such as Smart Start’s, have advanced fuel cell technology. This means the sensor in your Interlock determines alcohol-specific content in your breath, and is very reliable. This also means ANY alcohol content you have in your breath will be recorded in the Device, so Smart Start always recommends swishing your mouth with water before taking a breath test. Swishing your mouth with water will help dissolve the alcohol in your mouth from items such as breath mints, mouthwash, etc.
To keep it simple, make sure to swish your mouth with water before any test to eliminate false positive readings on your Device.
2. Cold Weather
If you live in an area where it is extremely cold, the Interlock Device could take a few minutes to warm up.
Allow yourself plenty of time to let the Interlock Device warm up before starting your car during the winter. Please note that if you go back inside your house or office, the Device could prompt for a test and you won’t hear it. Be aware that you could miss a breath test, which will be considered a violation. We advise that you stay near your car so you can see and hear your Device while your car warms up.
3. “Beating” an Interlock Device Breath Test
Due to the advanced technology in most Interlock Devices, cheating your way through a breath test is difficult, and will not work out for you in the end. Tampering with the Device may result in additional fees, and, in most states, a new criminal charge could be held against you. Your Device logs all activity, which, in most cases, is eventually shared with your State Authority. Your activity log will tell a pretty clear story, so Smart Start’s advice is to not try and beat the Device!
4. Know When to Test
When you have an Interlock Device, there is no specific schedule for when you need to take a breath test. The Device will prompt you for a breath test when you turn your key in the ignition of your vehicle. Then, it will prompt for another test when you are on the road for approximately 5-10 minutes. Rolling retests can also be randomly requested throughout your drive time. They determine your sobriety while you are out on the road, and are necessary in all states with Interlock Device laws in place.
5. Customer Service Team Available at Any Time
One of our core values as a company is to make sure you have a successful and easy time with our Interlock Device. Smart Start also realizes that people need to use their vehicles at any hour of the day. That’s why we have customer care representatives available for you 24/7/365 – yes, even during weekends and holidays! Whether it’s at 3 p.m. or 3 a.m., we are here to help you to answer questions or assist with your Device.

Can a breathalyzer detect drugs?
Here’s a question we get asked a lot. Can Ignition Interlock Devices, otherwise known as car breathalyzers, detect drugs such as marijuana?
It’s a fair thought. If Interlock Devices detect breath alcohol content, can they also detect drugs in someone’s system? The short answer is no, because of fuel-cell technology. That’s technical lingo for alcohol-specific testing properties in your device.
Developed in the 1960’s, the fuel cell has established a reputation over time to accurately provide a person’s breath alcohol sample. Basically, when you choose an Interlock Device with fuel cell technology, you are heavily lessening the possibility of false positive test results. Even with chewing tobacco or spicy foods, Interlocks with this technology have the utmost standards in accuracy of breath samples.
There is the possibility of a weed breathalyzer being developed by companies for roadside field testing by law enforcement. These devices would measure THC – tetrahydrocannabinol – in a person’s system.
Smart Start only offers devices that have alcohol-specific fuel cell technology. We also make sure our products are up to federal standards, are easy to use and have a discreet appearance, such as the SSI-20/30™.
Smart Start discourages the use of any type of drug while driving. It is illegal to drive while under the influence of drugs.

How Accurate is this Interlock?
Being ordered to use an Ignition Interlock Device, otherwise known as a ‘car breathalyzer’, could create some confusion and stress.
But it does not have to if you pick the right Interlock.
A lot of people wonder how accurate Interlock Devices can be. Although blood tests can provide exact results, they are very much considered an inconvenience by taking some time to administer a test, and they are invasive.
Interlock Devices, like our SSI-20/30™, provide accurate testing with minimal time required with fuel cell technology.
So, here’s the facts about Interlocks: Not all of them are created equal. In fact, you want to be very careful when choosing which Interlock you will end up using for the duration of your court order.
Here’s a huge point you need to consider to create less stress for you when choosing an Interlock:
The ACCURACY
The exactness of your testing results means using a high-quality Device from manufacturers who have been around the block a while. Smart Start has been revolutionizing the technology in alcohol monitoring since 1992 – and we are not slowing down! We do not stop in creating products that are convenient, easy-to-use and have accurate testing.
Fuel cell technology means alcohol readings from Interlocks that do not produce false positives. Smart Start Devices will only measure breath alcohol. Please note regardless that it is always wise before taking any breath test to rinse your mouth with water to ensure any breath contaminants are rinsed away.
It would benefit you to have an Interlock that gives you exact but speedy results. With Smart Start, breath tests can take seconds, and we provide accurate results through our alcohol fuel cell technology that prevents false reporting.
Your state and federal standards, mandated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), have regulations that all Interlock Device providers need to follow. Smart Start tests every Interlock Device to ensure we meet the standards from NHTSA and your state.
To maintain its accuracy, Smart Start Interlocks need to be calibrated periodically. This means testing the Device to make sure it is registering your BAC level accurately. Dependent on your state’s regulations, every 30 to 60 days you can visit your Smart Start shop, and a qualified technician will calibrate your Device.
Smart Start’s SSI-20/30 boasts qualities that customers appreciate. Here’s a few other factors people consider when choosing their device:
Our Interlock is small and discreet – it can fit in the palm of your hand! You can also disconnect the cord after your drive and place the Interlock securely in your glove compartment or purse so it is not in public view.
For your convenience, Smart Start boasts over 1,200 locations nationwide. We are always growing, too!
We like to help make your Smart Start Interlock program easier on your wallet. Check with our customer service team at 800.831.3299 to find out what specials you can receive with us!

What can I expect when I go to get an Interlock installed?
Visiting a Smart Start service center after being ordered to install an Interlock can be daunting. But drivers, you need to get back on the road again with safety in mind, so you want to go through this process as efficiently as possible.
No worries. Smart Start is on the same page as you.
BEFORE THE APPOINTMENT: Prep Yourself
Prepping before your Interlock appointment is perhaps the most important step for you, because, during the rest of the process, you will always have a friendly, qualified Smart Start team member helping you along the way. So, these steps are up to you: scheduling your appointment, what to bring to your appointment and making sure your schedule that day fits to accommodate your appointment.
