Montana Ignition Interlock Laws

For first-time offenders and repeat DUI offenders, your license will be confiscated immediately per Montana’s Administrative License Revocation (ALR) if:

  • Your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level was .08 or higher
  • You refused a breath test

Courts in Montana require second-time offenders to install and maintain Ignition Interlock Devices (IID) on their vehicles. You’re required to pay for all costs associated with the IID, from installation, monthly lease payments, and service fees to removal.

How to Get Your License Quickly in Montana

  1. Contact the Records and Driver Control Bureau to satisfy your court obligations.
  2. Schedule an appointment to have your ignition interlock installed with an approved Smart Start interlock service provider.
  3. Pay a $100 reinstatement fee to the Records and Driver Control Bureau.
