Nebraska Ignition Interlock Numbers Look Encouraging

Initial numbers for the new Nebraska DUI Law are in and they are looking positive. While only 1 in 6 were getting the interlock installed before the new law it looks like the intent of the new law is working. The intent was to increase the amount of people who put the ignition interlock devices on their vehicle, and do so faster. The initial numbers seem to prove that both are happening. Nearly nine of ten drivers are getting the ignition interlock devices installed now.

What does this mean for Nebraska? Less overtime being paid to officers and others for administrative license hearings. Since drivers must forego an ALR hearing to qualify for the interlock, one would assume that these hearings are down considerably. This saves the state and taxpayers time and money, while insuring that the interlocks are on and preventing future DUI’s earlier in the process.

What has it done elsewhere? In Kansas during the first full year of similar law, alcohol fatalities were down over 50%. Arrests were down, and ignition interlock installations were up. While the ignition interlock piece was not the only change in law, it was the most significant change during that period.
