For many DUI cases, the state of Wyoming will require an Ignition Interlock, but let’s go over in more detail when you’ll need one and for how long.
When You’ll Need an Ignition Interlock in Wyoming
In Wyoming, you’ll need an Ignition Interlock based on various factors such as your blood alcohol concentration level and number of prior DUI convictions.
For a first DUI conviction, you’ll need to use an Interlock by applying for an Ignition Interlock Restricted License if your BAC was at .15 or above.
For a second or subsequent DUI conviction, you’ll need to install an Interlock Device and obtain the restricted license, regardless of the BAC level.
As for how long you’ll need the device, this length of time can vary. For a first DUI conviction with a BAC of .15 or more, your time with an Interlock could be six months. Second DUI convictions can be a year, and third convictions can be two years. Test refusals could have longer Interlock requirement periods.
So, if you need an Ignition Interlock Restricted License in Wyoming to legally drive during your license suspension or revocation, how do you apply for it?
Obtaining the Ignition Interlock Restricted License Steps
First, you need to make sure you have the proper authorization to obtain an Ignition Interlock restricted license. The Department of Transportation or DOT will send you the notification to install an Interlock Device. Now let’s go over the steps to receive the restricted license.
- You will need to have a Wyoming-approved Interlock Device installed in any vehicle you drive. Smart Start has the proper credentials to provide this service for you! After your installation service, your Interlock provider, such as Smart Start, will provide you a copy of the Ignition Interlock Device installation certificate. You must provide this certificate to the DOT to receive credit for your Interlock.
- File SR-22 insurance with the DOT. They will provide you next steps to obtain this proof of financial responsibility. You can also ask your legal representative or DUI attorney if you have one.
- Once you go through an Ignition Interlock installation, you are provided an installation certification from your provider’s service center, such as Smart Start. You need to take this certification of installation to your local DOT office and apply for your special, IIR restricted driver’s license.
- Pay the reinstatement fee, regular driver’s license fee and the Ignition Interlock administrative fee during your DOT office visit.
Please keep in mind that an Ignition Interlock restricted license is not available for CDL or commercial license drivers!
