Do you know the life-saving changes coming Idaho’s way for DUI cases? Starting January 1, 2019, Idaho will be putting House Bill 551 into law, which requires Ignition Interlocks for all DUI cases, otherwise known as an “all-offender” Ignition Interlock law.
Idaho’s New Ignition Interlock Law
In its previous law, Idaho only required Ignition Interlocks for repeat DUI cases. Starting in 2019, however, Idaho will enact the mandatory installation of an Ignition Interlock Device for first-time DUI convictions for one year. The Ignition Interlocks will also be accompanied by a camera.
In addition, the new legislation in Idaho will be assisting individuals with financial hardship who are a part of the Ignition Interlock program. Any individuals who properly demonstrate their financial hardship and are unable to afford the device installation and maintenance fees can petition to the county to pay the costs through their Court Interlock Device and Electronic Monitoring Device Fund.
Ignition Interlocks Save Lives
Idaho will soon join more than 30 states and D.C. with an “all-offender” Ignition Interlock law, the most effective way to use Ignition Interlocks based on numerous national and state studies. By requiring Ignition Interlocks for all DUI cases, states can enjoy safer roads. Ignition Interlocks have been proven to reduce recidivism and stop someone from driving who’s alcohol-impaired. Not only that, but they also allow those arrested or convicted of a DUI to get back to their everyday routine and drive again legally and safely.
