The DUI Process in Washington

For a first DUI, you may need to spend 24 hours in jail after your sentencing. If you had a passenger under 16-years-old in your vehicle at the time of your DUI, you will need to serve an additional 24 hours of jail time.

Your sentencing or hearing can occur anywhere from four to six months after your arrest. However, your sentencing can take up to a year or more depending on various circumstances. If convicted, below is what you should expect to regain your driving privileges.

• You may need an alcohol/drug evaluation and attend a MADD Victim’s Impact Panel to complete your sentencing requirements.
• Supervised probation can be ordered for first-time DUIs with a high BAC level as well.
• You’ll also need to file for SR-22 ‘insurance’.

The DOL and Installing an Ignition Interlock in Washington

Now there’s another side to your DUI case (if convicted), which involves your license. The Department of Licensing (DOL) is your oversight authority on these circumstances. You will be in contact with the DOL to obtain an Ignition Interlock Driver’s License, or IIL. This license allows you to drive if you have an Ignition Interlock installed into your vehicle. In most cases, you can apply for the IIL during your license suspension or revocation period. Usually, you’ll need an Ignition Interlock for a year for a first-time DUI.
