Acknowledging May 2018 as National Drug Court Month
Instead of locking an individual away after a drug or alcohol arrest, there’s an option for them to receive the right treatment, tools and accountability in drug court to change their lives. Currently, 150,000 people in the U.S. in more than 3,000 types of drug courts are productive members of society by getting back to an everyday routine, such as working or going to school, instead of being behind bars.
Smart Start is proud to celebrate and acknowledge National Drug Court Month. This year’s theme is ‘Justice For All.’ Interventions like treatment court for participants whose criminal behavior stems from addiction or a mental health disorder assists them and prevents recidivism.
The Success of Drug Courts
Drug courts, otherwise known as treatment courts, are a proven success by seeing a reduction in crime since its introduction to the judicial system 20 years ago. Treatment courts have changed lives by implementing research-driven treatment and reform rather than incarceration. By holding individuals with substance abuse and mental health disorders accountable, treatment courts save billions in tax dollars and save the lives of more than 1.5 million citizens and veterans.
Supporting National Drug Court Month
To celebrate this month, the treatment court community is hosting local events to raise awareness, such as hosting picnics, clean-up projects, walks, and more. National Drug Court Month is also an opportunity to educate the public and stakeholders, such as meeting with local, state and federal officials, to expand or develop their drug courts in their jurisdictions.
Alcohol Monitoring Technology
Alcohol monitoring technology plays a big part in the drug court treatment program, and can be a requirement for participants.
One tool that holds participants accountable in treatment courts is Smart Start’s portable alcohol monitoring device, the SmartMobile™. As a court-ordered device, SmartMobile assists participants in their recovery from alcohol. Another tool is the Ignition Interlock, which is a requirement in some DUI cases throughout the U.S. Ignition Interlocks, coupled with the right supervision and treatment from the DUI court programs, are ending impaired driving, reducing recidivism and saving lives.
Smart Start is proud to be a part of someone’s recovery journey through superior technology that holds users accountable.
